Harbinger of Destruction: A LitRPG Adventure Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

An abused NPC gains consciousness. Now, he wants revenge. Players beware...

After a player-led event turns his once peaceful town into a band of ravenous monsters, a warrior NPC named Hirrus obtains a level of consciousness usually unobtainable by non-player characters.

It might be a gift of the gods, or a mistake, but Hirrus doesn’t care. It means he can track down and find the players responsible and stop them from doing it again.

Thing is, players don’t like their plans being interrupted. And in this game, there’s no resurrection until the weekly reset. Will Hirrus be able to cut a path of destruction across the land to get his revenge, or will the players be able to overwhelm him and bring him to justice?

Experience the start of a new EvP LitRPG series about a warrior's quest for revenge against cruel players so he can go John Wick on their faces with an Axe.

I really enjoyed this read, it was an unique take that I haven't personally experienced before.

The experienced was dampened by the fact the author decides to revamp the names for all the standard stats, and only told the reader what they were once. And then, throughout the book, the MC kept getting skills and gear with random three letters that I simply didn't remember what meant. And the MC never noted anything about it.

I also wish that it was revealed earlier what the players actually lost by getting killed by an NPC, because in normal games they just respawn. So why did it matter if an NPC went around killing them? I still enjoyed the tale of an super OP dude hunting them down.

But I might have enjoyed it more if it was revealed earlier that not only couldn't they respawn until reset on Tuesday, but they also lost their gear. Considering they showed some POV from the players early on, they could have easily shown the pov of someone who got killed and how upset they were over what they lost.

This is a very entertaining read. I just read thru the whole book nonstop! The story has a refreshingly alternative point of view, namely, that from an NPC character in a MMORPG. It’s well written, good grammar and very few typos. It is not high literature by any means. Rather, it’s just a good, entertaining story!

This book was good at first, but it got a little tedious when the main character was just mowing down everything in his path. He had a few challenges throughout it, but it didn’t feel like he had any real problems. And there were a few parts that were a little too convenient.

LitRPG as a genre is largely formulaic, and while it’s fun, it can often feel like there’s no new ground to break. Harbinger is a fun deviation from the norm, following a newly sentient NPC exacting vengeance against a particularly cruel player guild, and all the fallout from it. There’s little focus on levels, with gear and special abilities called Arcana carrying the day. And above all, the story is chock full of pop culture references, and fun Easter eggs.

My only minor complaint is that the attribute system is unintuitive, and differs from established strength/dex/intelligence language, but is a minor issue at worst, and ultimately not something I personally paid much attention to after the first few chapters

This is my first book by this author, but not my first NPC comes to life novel.

In this one, a guardsman names Hirrus has his wife and home attacked by... something. It sort of looks like a werewolf, and it's strong. His wife dies, as does Hirrus.

He wakes up in a nowhere place, where character creation happens. Hirrus has always followed his decision tree, but he can't overlook his wife dying. He forces character creation to make him stronger, and then he's released upon the world.

Along the way he discovers who unleashed the werewolves upon his town and home, and he vows justice upon them. That's the setup.

I wanted to like this book, and at times I did. the problem here is the same with arena books. The MC character, in this case a NPC guard, can't die or the story ends.

The editing is good. The stat sheets are there, but the author took a different approach here. Instead of strength, we have burliness, and so on. It's not a huge problem, but it's just different enough that it forced me to try and remember what ATT stood for (attenuation) and so on.

    4/5*

Had a couple moments where I thought it could have been made a bit more philosophical to really raise the lit level, didn’t make sense for the main character, but some of the side windows (of which there was a bit of a strange number, 2? 3? Including one that was obviously a hook for the next book, just in a different pov unlike anything except the start). Rather than get rid of that i would actually like more alternative POVs, particularly to tap a lil more into the interesting ethics and challenge of both the MC experiences and his existence

Like the title said, i picked up this boon by chance (kindle unlimited is good for that) with no expectations and little hope.
So imagine my surprise and pleasure when I found out the story was well written with a likeable MC and a fast paced run through the world. The dialogues are very good, the support cast interesting ( especially GM david who seems so real). One of the best part is the way the players speaks feels real and is totally unclear for the MC.
    Onto book 2 !

3.0 out of 5 stars Consequences of actions

Like the idea that players had to pay for actions. From npc viewpoint so get different view of things and enjoyed scenes where man character chasing a player and player getting no help since other npcs saw a guard chasing someone and players just ignored assuming could not really be hurt or part of some scene or quest.

As story progress see hints of other npcs struggling with the decision tree and doing small work around.
Would actually say 3.5 stars which for me means I liked it and will note author ad most likely read next in series. A 4 would be a book I liked and will add next to wish list and read soon after comes out while a 5 is most likey will preorder next book in either ebook or audible

It’s okay, just not that awesome as everyone in the review are saying. I guess a middle schooler would find this a nice read.

I enjoyed the character’s fights the most. The fights are concise and quick which doesn’t make it a drag to read.

On the other hand, I hated the characters, and the lack of outside or other characters’ perspective.

The protagonist is a Burly McManPain with no other conflict beside his dead wife, town, and revenge. Every adventurer beside the sidekicks are a static ass — either a psychopath, a sociopath, or just an awful being.

Also, a lack of development in the world. No other group decided to attack the big bad while his main raiders and officers were dropping like flies?
