Amanda Harper Paranormal Detective (Can I Kick a Ghost in the Nuts?): Blue Moon Investigations Book 3 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,416 ratings

Am I going to get my soul sucked out by a malevolent spirit? That’s what BFF and former police colleague Patience thinks will happen.

My name is Amanda Harper and I am a paranormal detective with the Blue Moon Investigation Agency. As of today, that is, and my first case is at the local shopping mall where terrified shoppers hysterically claim a ghost attacked them in the elevators. Not just one elevator – all of them.

Sounds like an easy enough case, right? That’s what I told myself, but nothing in life prepared me for the bedlam I’m about to face.

Despite the craziness, the chases, and the unexpected fighting, I need to solve this thing to justify my employment. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I am doing, I’m still working my notice period in the police, and I have a date tonight. I’ll find the ghost, be sure of it, but why, oh why, did I invite sassy BFF Patience Woods to help out.

Get ready for snark-fuelled fun as Amanda Harper goes ghostbusting!

If you like action-filled urban mystery books with a strong comedy undercurrent then Amanda Harper is about to deliver. The Blue Moon Investigation series features male and female leads, no graphic sex and very little cussing.

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

I liked that this series is so different than anything I've read! I thought the main character is very real, I'd like to meet her, we have similar values. I liked the first book, "Can You Kick a Ghost in the Nuts?, but I liked the second one even more "In doodoo with voodoo. And the third one, "Crop circles, Cows, and Crazy Aliens". Amanda is a police woman so she is strong, smart and able. But she doesn't do unbelievable things. There was just enough suspense, and the opportunity to 'figure it out' along with her as she worked through her investigation. I thought at first that they were paranormal stories and decided to try it for fun. Then I found the first story so delightful that I bought the other two. Now I want to get the Blue Moon Investigations series so I can read more about the company and how Amanda got involved and then hired.

This was a light and fun read, and Ienjoyed the story. Some of the conversations reminded me of Stephanie Plum and Lula, but I was a little surprised at the graphic language. Nevertheless, once I got over my surprise, I enjoyed the banter. The narration was fine for the tone of the book.
This is not great literature, or great dramatic performance, but who cares? It's fun.
I requested this audiobook and voluntarily left this honest review.

Paranormal Detective series(about to start book 4 in the series) but just finished the series about Albert
(The retired detective superintendent and his German Shepherd Rex Harrison) ! Found them delightful!
Just some mystery and some chuckles along the way!
Do give this author a read as I’m sure you will love his books, too!

The protagonist of this book, Amanda, was introduced in Book 1, but took a much smaller role than I expected in Book 2. This, Book 3, is the author’s attempt to fill out her character and bring her into the story. Like the previous two books, it’s told in the first person. While I thoroughly enjoy seeing inside Tempest’s head, what Amanda was thinking was of much less interest to me. I think the fundamental problem is that the author is a man, or perhaps it’s that I’m a woman. He’s just not as familiar with what goes through a woman’s mind and how that whole process works. However, I guess that’s not surprising. I think it’s kind of a mystery to most men.

The story is a bit chopped up between what her thoughts are about her personal life vs. her professional one. They’re pretty separated, and I don’t think women do that as much as Amanda does.

There’s an old joke I heard: If you ask a woman if everything is okay, she’ll launch into what’s going on at work, the problems she’s having with a friend, the cute shoes she has her eyes on, her weight, and the great guy she started dating. If you ask a man if everything is okay, he’ll tell you it is: he’s not hungry, not sleepy, and doesn’t have to go to the bathroom. Men are from Mars…

Amanda’s missing a lot of stuff that’s usually going on in a woman’s head. She spends a lot of time wondering how many dates with a man are appropriate before hopping between the sheets. (Hint: Since all relationships and people are different, there’s no pat answer.) 😉Nevertheless, the book is entertaining and worth a read, if only to move onto Book 4 with the whole story in hand.

I enjoyed reading this book. Interesting characters and story. The cases are interesting with a splash of their personal lives to add a little extra drama. Plan to go in to the next one to see what happens next, the hints were very enticing.

Fun characters, interesting mystery. This was not a full size book, but a lot was captured in the novella. It was fast paced, not overly complex mystery. I pretty much guessed who did it and how about three quarters through the book. It was fun seeing how the heroine caught her bad guy. Also of interest was the potential love triangle. Which hottie will she choose?

Those who've read the Tempest Michaels books by Steve Higgs have already met the heroine of his new series named Amanda Harper. She's given notice at the police station to resign from her position as a police officer after deciding she wants to work with Tempest. This book celebrates Amanda's first case as a paranormal investigator. I dearly love the Tempest Michaels character but found that it will take me a bit to get used to Amanda being the shining star of this series. It's been a while since I was in my twenties, and I don't recall being as fixated on my nether region as Amanda is. But hey, I wasn't beautiful, and I also didn't date a handsome millionaire. Fortunately, Tempest drops into the story periodically. Amanda is also attracted to him. The book is a fast, light-hearted read with a capable storyline. I've been in derelict malls here in America and can agree that they are spooky in a sad way. Higgs' creation of a ghost in a deserted mall is a good idea. I've never come across a villain before whose worse crime may be his flatulence. It will be interesting to see whether the character of Amanda shows growth in the rest of the series. Gotta admit I missed Bull and Dozer!

Smart female lead with a libidinous girlfriend. Not terribly original but still a bit of fun.
The story is well told, the plot lacks a bit of logical consistency but its a mystery light so it can be forgiven.
I dont normally buy short books, I now remeber why.

This story follows Ms Harper who features in the "Blue Moon" books, it gives the author a chance to develop this character more, and those around her, and continues with the same humour, all in all as good as the original.
