The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

The dream life of Harriet Harper, the celebrated author of the bestselling crime novels starring detective Florentine Cooper, turns into a nightmare when kidnappers snatch her daughter. Warned of the brutal consequences for Prudence if she informs the police, Harriet channel’s Florentine’s detective skills and bravery as she tracks the kidnappers to their lair: the haunted Hellingast Asylum.

Murder isn’t always the worst evil…

To Fabian and Nancy, it seemed like the perfect plan. Kidnap some rich person’s kid and extort a large fee for their safe return, then flee the country to somewhere tropical with poor extradition laws. Once you had the money, it’s not like you even needed to bother with the ‘return’ bit.

Kidnap three kids at the same time and you’re tripling your money without tripling the effort involved. However, they didn’t prepare for:

  • A best-selling crime author who knows how criminals think, and will do anything to find her daughter.
  • An entrepreneur with enough money to pay the ransom and dispatch a special forces team to hunt the kidnappers.
  • Three children who would rather effect their own escape instead of waiting for their ransom/rescue.

Worst of all, something truly evil lies deep within the bowels of the abandoned asylum they’re using as a hideout, a dormant power, waiting to rise again. All it needs is some sacrifices…

Also available and linked to The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum is the free short story, Eden Falls, which takes place in the same setting and features some of the same characters. See my website for details.

Haunted Asylum in a Spooky Sky

The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum

Kidnapped children, desperate parents, and an evil spirit out for revenge.

Hellingast asylum is based on a real asylum, Hellingly Asylum, located in Suffolk, England.

Once a destination for horror-seekers, indie film makers, and urban explorers, a psychiatric ward in East Sussex has lain abandoned for 26 years.

In 1999, I joined a small group of Urban explorers to explore the abandoned building.

Our night time excursion really brought home the creepy atmosphere within its walls. So much so I knew I had to write a book about it. Many years later, it was the inspiration for The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum.

Sitting on top of a hill overlooking the East Sussex Countryside sits the battered remains of Hellingly hospital, Formerly Hellingly Asylum. Hellingly is a prime example of the "splendid isolation" design philosophy that is present in the design of many institutional buildings of this era.

Hellingly was designed by architect GT Hine and built to a late Victorian design during a period of massive expansion for mental health facilities in Britain. Hellingly First opened its doors to patients in 1903 and continued to serve the local community for almost the next 90 years. As with so many other asylums a change in policy on the treatment of many patients meant closure of the majority of buildings in 1994.

The Hospital today has suffered over 10 years of neglect badly, arson has destroyed several buildings most notably the administration block. Vandals have been systematically removing all the windows, the easier to access ground floor areas have received the brunt of these attacks.

Inside Hellingly is an orderly maze, A thoughtful layout interrupted by collapsing floors and piles of rubble.

The wards at Hellingly are Impersonal. Long corridors lead to sash windowed wards, bland walls of brown tiles line the stairs and halls.

Everywhere there is destruction, its difficult to find an unbroken pane of glass, or a door that's not been kicked in.

Today, Hellingly bares little resemblance to its former state. The main buildings have been cleared and a housing estate constructed in their place.

Eden Falls, the prequel short story to The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum

Eden Falls and Hellingast Covers

Eden Falls takes place in the same setting as The Ghost of Hellingast Asylum and features some of the same characters

At an isolated location in the Scottish Highlands lies the mansion of Eden Falls. Built by a mysterious, reclusive man who kept his wife and son there as virtual prisoners, it has sat abandoned since the tragic deaths of the entire family.

Any who visit are never seen again, and rumours say the place is cursed, haunted by an evil spirit.

Keen to make a name for himself in paranormal circles, cocksure Thaddeus Inglehart decides he will be the one to purge Eden Falls of its resident evil.

Accompanied by a psychic, a sceptic and a reporter, he believes himself more than capable of dealing with whatever dwells in the old mansion.

He was wrong.

Approx. 17,000 words - 100 printed book pages

Although not essential to be read before reading The Ghost Of Hellingast Asylum, Eden Falls introduces some of the characters and sets up the story for what is to come.

Edan Falls is available from Amazon or free from my Ben Hammott Books website.

Former global adventurer, currently a writer of thrillers, with a mind full of monsters. Ben Hammott is a British author living in England with his human family and more than the average number of cats.

Most of his published works fall under the broad category of ‘thriller,’ getting there by way of horror, fantasy or historical mystery. Two of his many novels, ‘Hell Ship: The Flying Dutchman’ and ‘Ice Rift,’ are now available on audio.

Though now firmly based back in the UK, he wrote most of his books while travelling across Europe, until a certain global pandemic forced a change of direction. Until that point, he could genuinely style himself as something of an adventurer and explorer, making a few small discoveries and finding his way into locations not seen by the public in decades (including one small misadventure in a dinghy that’s still a sore spot for the person who leant it to him).

When he’s not writing, Ben spends his time exploring his passion for resin moulding and 3D printing, and constructing ever more new climbing places for his cats, while insisting to anybody who will listen that he’s not a cat person.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Ben's books but......
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2021
I've read all Ben's book and I usually down load any new ones without reading the blurb first. I did that with this book. I was really drawn into the setting up of the story, until the third chapter! Ben then introduced a new character, the prime minister. Unfortunately, he was called Trump! I couldn't get past this. I've had it up to here with Trump, and I couldn't then focus on the story itself The character is similar to the real prat!
Sorry Ben, any other name and I would have been more than happy to continue. Your books are brilliant. The ice rift series is wonderful, as is the eldorado.
Sorry about my little moan! 😏
