About the Author
As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about. In this dazzling new world, she turned her grocery-store romance ideas around and is now putting them to paper as fast as her fingers can type. She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)
She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn't always true, Jackie writes for love.

About the author

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and her dream was to someday leave her corporate day job behind and travel the world. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.
Luckily, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write about. - Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021Original Audiobook Review November 2023:
It's been nearly 3 years since I first read Heroes for Ghosts and I'm a little ashamed to admit I have yet to delve into the rest of the Love Across Time series even though the next two already sit on my kindle. One of these days I'll explore the other time-travel stories by Jackie North but for now I knew it was the perfect time to re-visit Devon & Stanley for Veteran's Day.
As so often the case, I can't think of a single thing to add to my original review as to how amazing this story is, if anything I loved it even more this time around. As for the narration, Greg Boudreaux does a wonderful job bringing Devon and Stanley's journey to life. Followers of my reviews may recall that one of the highest honors I can bestow on an audiobook is when I'm left with the feeling of expectation of hearing Harlow Wilcox or Don Wilson jumping in with a sponsor's commercial during one of the old radio shows I collect. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, I get so involved in listening that I feel like Ralphie from A Christmas Story laying on the floor staring at the radio listening to Little Orphan Annie.
Anyway, that's the benchmark for a brilliant audiobook for me and between Boudreaux's voice and North's words, Heroes for Ghosts completely hooked me in and I can easily see this being an annual Veteran's Day re-listen.
Original Review February Book of the Month 2021:
This was brought to my attention when I asked in a FB M/M book rec group for stories with a similar concept to the movie Groundhog Day, the whole repeating the day over scenario. When I also learned this had a WW1 element, I was all kinds of grabby hands. I was not disappointed.
I have to start off by saying this: I don't often make mentions of details in stories because I'm a spoiler-free reviewer but this isn't a spoiler, this is more of a feeling, a reason why I'm a history lover. When Devon is wobbly about his thesis, about telling the story, wondering if anyone will care, Stanley's answer is spot on how I feel about history and why it's an important subject and why everyone needs to learn it.
“The whole thing is stupid,” said Devon. “After everything you’ve been through. After hearing about it from you and having you show me the trenches, telling me about that guy who lost his leg—which isn’t in the records anywhere—because you were there, and you suffered for it. For me to write a paper about it, it’s like I’m benefiting from that without having paid the price.”
The twisted feelings that had started when Stanley had shown up on the green grasses that were all that was left of a disastrous battle had risen to the surface, and he’d said them aloud. He could barely look at Stanley with this confession ringing in the air. His constant awareness about the futility of war was only the half of it. The other half was the loss that war brought, inexplicable and never-ceasing, and Stanley had been the one to go through that. Not Devon.
“But you’re telling the story,” said Stanley as he stood up and came over to Devon, so close that as he took a step forward, Devon found himself against the wall. “You’re telling all of our stories, mine, Isaac’s, everybody’s.”
“Nobody will care,” said Devon. His voice broke on the last word because he realized that it was true. None of his friends cared, and his thesis advisor had strongly suggested he focus on another aspect of the Great War. In the end he was alone, except for Stanley, who could be dragged back through time at any moment.
“I care,” said Stanley. “And you care. You can put the stuff that I told you in your paper, and then one day, somebody will read it. It’ll matter to somebody, someday.”
Now, I know the whole time-travel sub-genre gives this historical a fantasy twist but this moment in time, this exchange the author gives between the two men is so important, it really resonated with me, it's how I have felt whenever someone says "why do I need to know, it happened years ago to people I don't know". Their actions had a bearing on life today, time is what connects us all but most importantly, those souls of yesteryear, be it on the world stage or your own family tree, lived, they mattered and those stories need to live on. In these few paragraphs that I shared the author put voice to the importance more than anything I've ever read before. For that alone, I have to say a huge "Thank You" to Jackie North.
Okay, off my soapbox and onto the story.
HOLY HANNAH BATMAN!!! How have I not seen this series before? How did it not cross my reading path? Heroes for Ghosts is a brilliant tale of history, fantasy, science fiction, romance, and drama with characters that are likeable, loveable, wanting-to-know-able, I'll be honest it ticks every single one of my reading boxes. I've read historical paranormal/supernatural/fantasies before but too often the historical element gets lost in the world of fantasy so for Jackie North to combine all these factors AND keep the historical accuracies is just pure . . . well it's magical(and I'm not talking about the time-travel bit😉).
Devon is a history lover after my own heart, thesis or not if I didn't have family keeping me grounded now, the idea of going to the place history happened and living in a mostly state of seclusion to do the research sounds absolutely heavenly. I can also honestly say, if I came across Stanley the way Devon did, my mind would be a bit teeter-totter as to believing him and worried he escaped from an institution too. I don't see how anyone couldn't love either of these men, they are just so real and wonderfully written, there is no doubt to this reader they have to have their HEA. If you follow me you'll know what my next statement will be: to see how the men get there you'll have to experience their journey for yourself.
And what a journey it is! You won't regret it, historical lover or not, if you love an old fashion journey of storytelling than this is for you.
I'll add that this is my first Jackie North and it certainly won't be my last because if her backlist is only half as good as Heroes for Ghosts than it will still be a pleasure to dive in.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2018I enjoyed reading Heroes for Ghosts by Jackie North. The two main characters are easily lovable and perfect together. The book is well written. I really got into this book and it started with amazing 5 stars for me until halfway it slipped to 4. Jackie North is very descriptive with her writing and her work shows great research but will not bore you to tears either. She makes enough mentions to give credibility, but knows when enough is enough. She actually had me so invested in this book that I looked up the Battle of Ornes to find out more about it.
My only drawbacks from the 5 stars are discussed here: for time travel, I expected more reaction from Stanley to find himself in present days. Although the author does refer to him learning new things that didn't exist then, I didn't get the character of a man from the past thrown into the future. I would have expected it more so when they go for dinner and grocery shopping, wanting to see Stanley's reaction. I also don't believe it would have been that easy to get Stanley from France to the US without even a birth certificate to identify him as an American. Even if they claimed he had Amnesia, he would be fingerprinted etc. I'm surprised the author didn't just have him marry Stanley in France which would have been the easier way to get Stanley to travel with him.
I don't know much of time travel stories since I don't read them often but I'd have hoped since events changed (won't say what), I would have expected there to be more of a ripple effect for the present.I could see Devon's obsession with Stanley but would have hoped for at some point a clear distinction to be established between his obsession and actually loving Stanley for who he is and not what Devon wanted.
Nevertheless a successful debut novel for North.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024I am always looking for World War II time travel romances and they are hard to find, especially gay ones, so since this was World War I figured I would check it out as being close enough in a way. I was delighted with this book. Bittersweet blend of the futile horrors of war, the fantastical possibilities of time travel, and ultimately love at first sight across time. The sequel novella is worth checking out as well. Devon reminds me somewhat of me...and as for Stanley, well, let's just say he reminds me of someone else, only from World War II, but that's another story that maybe I'll write one of these days..
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2024Decent read, sweet story, but omg if I saw the word doughboy one more time was gonna scream. And the love came too quickly- I get it, it’s romance, also time travel, so suspend disbelief, but after a day?…

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliantly written Ghost story..
WOW.. A brilliant story right from the first page it gets your attention. A great debut book and brilliantly researched and written. Having a ghost literally tripping over Devon and the war scene before is a fantastic start for the book. The storyline is fantastic one and quite unique as Stanley goes back and forth to past and present time. This had me wondering how this would end which turned out brilliant. I'll be definitely looking forward to reading more from this series in the future.
Stanley 19 yrs was a soldier in WW1 his friends dying around him with communications down. Running trenches to get code words from command to retreat was his objective..was his last thought.
Devon was researching and writing a thesis on the history of the 44th battalion served in France.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Well my first book by this author was Hemingway’s Notes & I loved it the whole thing from start to finish so I was intrigued to read another. I chose this book as I have always been fascinated by WW1 & the travesties that we’re behind the smiling photographs of the men who joined up at that time. Could a love story a time travelling one at that not make a mockery of this solemn period of time. No it couldn’t it because it brought to life those men in an honest heart wrenching way that draws the reader in from the start so that you are rooting for them to live & to get to the end of war in one piece. Devon & Stanley were meant for each other & fate found a way to bring these two lonely men together. I cried, smiled & wished upon wished that these two would end up together & get their HEA (spoiler alert) they do. Thank you Ms North for a fabulous book roll on the next... Xx

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Sweet M/M Time Travel Romance
I am such a sucker for m/m novels and for time travel novels so when you combine those genres into one book, of course I'm going to love it. I honestly wish we had more m/m time travel novels, so I'm happy to hear that this is the first of a time travel m/m series. Yay!
This novel was incredibly well researched. The WWI details were so finely sketched. I could picture myself there in the trenches. It's always impressive when you can see how much work an author put into researching the topic she's writing about.
The relationship between Stanley and Devon was super sweet. My first thought was, "Oh, this is pretty insta, huh?" but whenever they were apart, I was desperate for them to reunite so I was absolutely sucked into their connection and it made sense and felt authentic.
I'm so looking forward to the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Time-Travel Romance across a Hundred Years
I'd never read anything by Jackie North before picking up this book but I was drawn in by the premise. The period around the two World Wars fascinates me and the idea of a romance set during this harrowing period was too much to resist.
The author has definitely put a great deal of love and attention into the creation of her main characters. Devon is a lonely, devout academic who is obsessed by World War One and moves from the US to spend time in a cottage on the edge of a former wartime dugout where an entire battalion of young American soldiers was slaughtered in 1916.
Stanley is one of the soldiers in that ill-fated unit, and the story is told alternately from each man's viewpoint, as Devon researches the battle for his thesis and Stanley valiantly attempts to survive it.
A glitch in time throws Stanley across 100 years into the future after a mustard gas attack, where he meets and slowly begins to have feelings for Devon.
This is a slow - burning intimacy, Stanley is initially wary. In 1916 love between two men was still illegal and the feelings he harboured for a fellow soldier, Isaac, had to be kept firmly under wraps. From Devon, he learns of a brighter future world where a man can freely love his fellow man.
However his incomplete mission to bring back the code message signalling retreat that will save his doomed unit keeps on pulling him back to 1916 to try again, and a again.
I loved the little details that Jackie North sowed into her story, the grim realities of life in the trenches for these young men who had signed up for adventure and in many cases marched directly to their deaths. Her characters are richly drawn, full of warmth and even grim humour.
She gets the balance between Stanley's devotion to his friends, Isaac in particular, and Devon back (or forward) in the 21st Century perfectly right and the culmination of their story brought more than a few tears to my eyes.
I would recommend this book to someone who is a history lover and enjoys a sweet MM romance with a hint of the paranormal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, despite the war
All of Jackie’s time-travel novels are well written and in this case, rather sad, as it depicts the loss of young men’s lives in the first World War. Despite that, it is still a love story with two engaging main characters and an interesting read.
