Heteroflexible (Spruce Texas Romance Book 3) Kindle Edition
Jimmy Strong is one devastating son of a gun.
He's a dancer, gorgeous, stubborn, fiercely protective of his loved ones - and as hetero as they make them.
He also happens to be my best friend.
I want to have another long, amazing summer with Jimmy, but something is different this time.
Jimmy is clingy and extra emotional, since he just broke things off with his latest lady-squeeze from college.
And the more time he spends with me, the more I'm realizing a troubling fact of my own.
I have feelings for him, and I can't keep them bottled up any longer.
Jimmy accepts and loves me for who I am and proudly defends me against the world.
We have been close pals since high school and endured everything together, good and bad.
But can our friendship survive the truth if I dare to let it out?
JIMMY
All I want to do this summer is kick back with my best buddy Bobby.
But something seems off about him. He's touchy and restless.
When I tease him and wrestle him to the ground as usual, he gets red-faced mad at me.
What's going on with him?
Everything comes to a head when my nosy mom sets Bobby up on a blind date with a guy from one town over.
I can't explain it, but I just know that guy isn't right for my best friend.
And the more I think about it, the angrier I get.
Why am I so possessive over Bobby? I'm just protecting his heart, right?
But sometimes, you have to take things into your own hands to find out the truth.
And after one daring night out on the town, Bobby makes a reckless, unthinkable move,
and our friendship changes forever.
If that's what it can even be called anymore.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2019Author/composer Daryl Banner graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Theatre and Psychology. His writing includes new adult romance, M/M romance, post-apocalyptic fantasy, and dystopian. According to his brief biography he is ‘most inspired by the smart and unlikely hero, but urges you (the reader) not to fall in love with them; they may deceive you with their innocence.’
The difference, or at least one difference in Daryl’s books – and there are now many of them – is that in addition to managing the erotica arena he adds sufficient character psychology to make his players not only interesting and exceptionally physically attractive, but also variations on extremes of social behavior. This is the third novel in the Spruce Texas Romance series, and for those who have not read Born Again Sinner, and Football Sundae, the read HETEROFLEXIBLE and proceed straight to the others! This is one very fine series of novels – some of Daryl’s best,
HETEROFLEXIBLE wastes no time getting right to the reason for composing this romantic, erotic little novel – as the Prologue shares from a red pickup truck: ‘I ain’t gonna lie. Jimmy Strong is on devastating son of a gun. Especially with the wind basting trough the driver’s side window, making his short brown hair flip and flop every which way. Well, the bit of his hair that isn’t squished down by that dang hideous red-and-white ball cap he stubbornly refuses to retire, despite its threadbare state, weird stains, and a hole in its bill. But that’s the thing about Jimmy Strong: when the boy loves something, he won’t ever let it go!’
Get ready for another Banner winner. The plot – ‘”Jimmy Strong is one devastating son of a gun. He’s gorgeous, stubborn, a dancer, fiercely protective of his loved ones (to a fault), and intense. He can steal your heart with his infectious laughter ... and break it with a single glance of his stunning, rich brown eyes. I ought to know. He breaks mine every day. Being his gay best friend and college roomie is, to say the least, frustrating. Especially when you’ve seen just about every inch of that corn-fed beauty, he’s worked his way into every fantasy you can remember having, and he’s as straight as they make them. We’re heading back to Spruce for the summer. He just broke things off with his latest lady-squeeze, which means I have Jimmy all to myself for three long months of relaxation, bro-time, and kicking back. Until one night alone with Jimmy - and a reckless, unthinkable move - that changes everything.’
Fine Southern atmosphere and a terrific romance. Read this one twice for all the character details – and become a frequent Banner flyer! Grady Harp, September 19

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2021I read the entire Spruce Texas series via Kindle unlimited. This particular book, I read the prologue about 5 times before returning the book. Then I said, screw it, and bought it so I could read it another 12 dozen times. Because it’s so well done. It grabs you by the throat and, without apology, throws you into the story headfirst. It tells you with no uncertain terms who the main characters are, where they stand and where they want to be. The words are impassioned, the imagery is explosive, the atmosphere throbs with intensity. And that’s just the prologue.
I almost wish this wasn’t a MM romance because it deserves to be appreciated by a far wider audience. But then again, it wouldn’t be the story it is if it weren’t MM. I don’t think I’ve read too many books where I’ve been as invested in the main characters as I was with Jimmy and Bobby. I could feel the angst, frustration, hope, joy and love. I smiled, cried and laughed, literally. Would I recommend reading this romance? No. Because it’s not a romance, it’s a love story. One that will shatter your heart and then put it back together one piece at a time. And in the end you'll be thanking Banner for emotional roller coaster ride.
All the books in this series are good, but Heteroflexible is the jewel. And did I mention the prologue? It's a damn masterpiece.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024I really enjoyed the novel, especially the first 2/3. Anyone who's fallen for a straight best friend will relate, and straight Jimmy's obtuseness about how he might be impacting gay Bobby was effective. The best part of Banner's novels is that you forget there's a formula because he has great character development and depth. I appreciated that until close to the end, I could think maybe we wouldn't get the ending M/m romances have to have. But I was also hoping for a different ending that was happy but maybe as realistic as so much of what happened throughout.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2019This is the third entry in the Spruce, Texas Romance series and it is a doozy. Each one of these books, even though they are interconnecting, are unique and different in their content. The one thread going through all three is that they are about male/male love. Each story is so sweet and loving and even if you were not inclined to like this genre, it would touch you deeply in spite of your prejudice. This is about a town that is NOT prejudice and if that truly exists, why can't the whole country be like that? Daryl truly writes from the heart and is very much influenced by his own history and experience. You can tell that in every word he writes because it is too raw and heartfelt to be imagined. This is the story of Trey Strong and his lifelong BFF Bobby Tucker, who has lived in his outrageous shadow and loved him anyway. Trey is straight and Bobby is an outed gay young man. Bobby is a really outstanding soccer player while the straight guy is the dancer. Curious isn't it? I love the switch and how it plays into the storyline. You will thoroughly enjoy how these two opposites find a love beyond just being buddies. They know that they love each other but only Bobby is in love with his BFF. The unfolding of their emotions, especiallyTrey's, is so beautifully written that you physically feel them. Daryl is a wonderful writer and this is a terrific end to a lovely series. Read them all if you haven't already because each one is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy and Bobby
As and unconditional fan that I am of the author and of Spruce in general, I can tell all of you that this story really needed to be told. I agree 100% with the very first statement Daryl Banner writes in the beginning of the book.
Bobby and Jimmy were a precious couple since the beginning.
Sweet and pure are the words that come to me just after reading it.
The relationship is so intensely clear and unconditional that was absolutely perfect.
Jimmy and Bobby were soul mates since their childhood and grown up as the purest form of friend and partnership even before they came out. They were an absolutely pair even before the first kiss.
You really should read this book to brighten your day and melt your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daryl Does It Again
I have read most of Daryl's books and found them five-star stories. I lived in Seguin, Texas, for a couple of years and enjoyed the small town atmosphere, so I can appreciate the feeling Daryl creates in Spruce. I enjoy his wonderful, exciting writing style. Daryl creates wonderful word pictures, to bring his characters vividly to life. I always feel a bit sad when his stories come to an end because I feel a loss, as though the characters have moved out of town, moving on and leaving me behind. I had a similar situation to the main characters in the book at the beginning of my current 26-year-long relationship, so this story touches me in a special way. I recommend "Heteroflexible" with another five-star rating

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
First good book on a bisexual or pan sexual man’s experience and struggle. Great reading. Also I love how past characters keep reappearing. You have to really read the series. It is one of the best in gay literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spruce has a new love story we can obsess over!!
I was so excited when Daryl decided to return to Spruce Texas because we got to see our fav characters from the previous two books and it was just amazing to see how our lovebirds were doing years on!
I loved this book/this romance because it seemed a lot more deep and pure then the rest of the series (don't kill me 😂) I'm a sucker for love stories that shows characters being close friends for YEARS first and then getting together in a beautiful and big way it's just....yes! So sweet!
People are complaining this story is slow and not as developed as the others and...I honestly don't know what they are talking about. This was the right pace for these characters, explores more on sexuality in detail then the other books and was realistic, funny, charming and just great!
There is also a cute brother brother moment which you will LOVE and yeah. Daryl has done it again and I'm so glad!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
It's been a few years since I read the earlier books in this series, and I decided to give it a go without a re-read of those earlier novels. I found this book introduced the characters and town well - there was no major assumed knowledge or gaps that made me needs to go back and do a re-read, so that was a huge positive to me.
I loved getting to know Jimmy and Bobby - we met Jimmy when he was younger in the earlier books, so I enjoyed getting to see him older, more mature (well, slightly) and making his mark on the world. I loved seeing them take their friendship further and work out what that meant longer term. I couldn't help but feel for Bobby in a few scenes, where he was struggling with his feelings and how Jimmy was behaving.
Overall, a fun read that had a very satisfying ending.
