Hidden Depths: A Breathtaking Welsh Murder Mystery (A British Detective Tom Blake Crime Thriller Book) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 209 ratings

Where the land meets the sea, a killer stalks. He knows his victims darkest secrets, and he’s waited a lifetime to take his revenge.

When a divorced woman is discovered floating in her bath in Stoke, Detective Tom Blake is called to investigate. It appears to be an open-and-shut case of suicide…

…until other women who also belong to the Never Too Late to Find Love Facebook dating group begin to turn up dead at historic landmarks in Snowdonia.

Blake is seconded to North Wales Police to work with DI Robyn Lloyd on the case: instantly, they form a strong connection.

But the detectives soon realise wealthy, English women looking for love are only part of the killer’s evil plan.

The case takes on a deadly new significance when connections to a Welsh terrorist group, thought to be dormant, emerge from deep inside the close-knit community.

But when Robyn disappears without a trace, her life becomes in grave danger.

Will Blake’s trail across the treacherous Menai Strait uncover this depraved killer before Robyn becomes the next victim in his deadly game?

Set amid the spectacularly dramatic coastlines, haunting mountains and historic towns of Snowdonia. This twisting crime thriller will keep you hooked to the end. Perfect for fans of Simon McCleave, Conrad Jones, Jenny O’Brien and Stephen Puleston.

MEET THE DETECTIVES

Tom Blake is a forty-seven-year-old widowed detective inspector. His wife and ten-year-old son were tragically killed in a fatal hit and run car crash ten years ago. He was driving at the time, and his daughter Isabel was also in the car but miraculously escaped with minor cuts and bruises. He still suffers from emotional flashbacks and neck pain. His team never caught the joyrider who killed them, but he vows to bring the perpetrator to justice one day.

Robyn Lloyd is a forty-six-year-old DI in the North Wales Police. She'd love to meet the right man, but her demanding job often gets in the way. Will this deadly case finally bring her closer to finding love or push her toward something more sinister?

If you're not from Wales you had better stay out. This is a gripping, frightening story with innocent people coaxed into a web of deceit and death. Great characters, good and bad, and very well written.
    Highly Recommended.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Never Too Late To Find Love ... a Facebook dating club, bringing together the young and old, men and women.. and evidently, dangerous people.

A divorced middle-aged woman is found in her bathtub. Suicide.. or murder?

DI Tom Blake and DI Robyn Lloyd are called to investigate. So far they have nothing .. no clues, no motive. But then other women begin to turn up dead and their bodies left at historical sites.

What did they have in common? They were all members of the Facebook dating club.

There are a few suspects, but they are quickly cleared. But then Blake receives a threatening letter. Maybe, just maybe, the motive is not what they thought. Maybe there's something else behind these murders.

The more answers they find, the more questions they have. The detectives soon realize wealthy, divorced or widowed, English women are only part of his evil plan.

The closer they get to the truth, the more personal danger they face .....

There's lot of action is this well-constructed novel. Suspects are many, motives are varied. The characters are solidly drawn, and I really enjoy how the relationship, both personal and professional, emerges, giving them a little more depth. Although 4th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. However, I do recommend starting at the beginning. It's interesting to see how the characters change as they mature over time.

Maybe I should have started from the beginning, might have helped understand what was happening. Plus the language created some confusion. Fast read, good characters, and evil ones to hate. Pretty graphic for this old lady, but I pushed through. Hence the so-so stars.

    Misguided patriotic attacks!

DI Blake joins the Welsh police, when a murder he is investigating, seems to have originated in Wales.
Good pace, well written and great characters!

I like how the clues and investigation develop, with some complicated motives, spanning decades.
It ended more abruptly than I would have liked but I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!
    I'd highly recommend this book.

Crime thrillers aren't normally my genre, but I absolutely loved this. It was a refreshing change for me. I lost a few sunny days reading this. I couldn't get out of my chair. It is fast paced, gritty, the plot constantly moving forward, twisting. I'm a DCI Blake fan now. 99p for this much entertainment is ridiculous!

Once again an unputdownable book. Mr Burgess does tend to introduce the final prime suspect someway into the narrative but in spite of that his writings are quite captivating

5.0 out of 5 stars Another really good Tom Blake adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2021
Yes, his adventures continue, but in a very different location. The descriptions of the locations are very good, and I can attest to their accuracy. The plot is unusual but utterly believable. A very enjoyable read.
