High Lonesome Kindle Edition
Tanner’s not staying at a high-altitude hut to admire the scenery. He’s got a date to keep with the sort of person you don’t want to disappoint, a date that’ll result in him earning some much-needed cash in exchange for what’s left of his self-respect. But that’s OK. He gave up on self-respect when he picked up the needle anyway.
Pyotr didn’t drop into a blizzard to rescue Tanner or to drag Joe back down to the real world. His mission is a lot colder than that. People are only pawns, and spies are only heroes to those who don’t know them.
Hermit, addict, spy. Three men, one snowstorm, zero reason to trust. And someone’s coming …
Content warning: this book contains on-page heroin use and detox. A brief argument follows the reveal of a character’s HIV status.

If HIV positive characters and/or sex with other characters is a trigger for you skip this one.
There were so many things I liked about this story, but there were things that bugged me as well.
I thought the HIV was dealt with well and humane, without being overly preachy, or too blase. Yes, he made some mistakes, but it made his character seem more real without being a terrible person. I thought this aspect of the story was what would bother me most, but it was handled quite well.
The heroin addiction was painted rather stark and bleek, but I think the withdrawal and recovery was a little light on consequences and actions. We definitely didn't need it in detail, which in one instance I felt we got too much of. I would have preferred to "see" the outhouse episode from an outside character rather than the character experiencing the issue.
The spy is where I had my real issues with the story. He wasn't spy enough. 10 years at this stuff and even if he had fallen totally in love at first site he still wouldn't have blow it so badly. I think it would have made a better story if he'd lied to them a lot longer.
I also had an issue with mystery portion of the story. There were just way too many mistakes for me to handle, I ended up skimming most of the "incident" because it just made me cringe too much. The ski pole should have been moved to the bedroom, another hall, ie. anywhere but with the rest of the poles. Or use the copy on the phone, or a dozen other options come to mind. But really, paper copies leaving the company with DOD contracts is just not possible. I've worked in engineering for more years than I can remember, and even non-proprietary sensor diagrams are never allowed to leave the building.
While I felt the characters could have been a little better fleshed out, they worked as they were because so much of their personalities were right there in there titles - addict, loner, spy.
I did like the epilogue it was very sweet, and gave a nice roundness to the story so that no one felt like they gave up more than the others to make happiness work.
Some of the sex was questionable mostly because of the addiction, but most of it was nice and steamy without being over the top. I'd say there was a some mild submission, but your views may vary. I waffled back and forth between 3 and 4 stars because of my issues with the spy plot, so I rounded up from 3.5 stars to 4 because I thought the addiction and HIV issues were handled well.
Both Joe’s HIV status and Tanner’s heroin use are alluded to in the text before the author explicitly spells them out, and both things cause conflict between the three main characters. Pyotr can’t get on much of a high horse because of his current life situation, and I enjoyed the honest arc between him and Joe as truths come out and tensions rise, then ease. I especially appreciated how the author handles Joe’s status, in how he came out the losing side of the odds he played with his earlier life, but that he is not a character set out as a tragic example who must be punished.
In fact, I loved how all three men ended up with a happily ever after despite the conflicts they faced both separately and together. This book could have worked with distinct romance arcs between three different couples (though we’d have lost the fun spy shenanigans in one of them). Chris brings this story to the next level by intertwining them, packing the perfect amount of tension and angst into the intriguing and shifting plot. I highly recommend this book to readers looking for a different twist on the romantic suspense story, featuring dynamic and unapologetic characters I couldn’t help but root for.
The writer does a really good job with several serious topics in this story, and I enjoyed how well those elements were handled. My only slight niggle with the plot was how it didn't feel right that the professional agent was acting all kinds of unprofessional.
So I was pleasantly surprised by its intrigue, as well as by each of the characters. It turned out to be a much deeper book than I’d anticipated, which delighted the hell out of me. I grew to care about these guys, about their very real struggles and weaknesses, so it was especially sweet when they got their HEA.
I read this book through Kindle Unlimited, but I liked it enough to purchase a copy for my collection. That may say more about the book than this review!

The fact that High Lonesome is available on KU is a bonus. Read the book! It’s time well spent.
I liked all three main characters, the drug addiction theme running throughout and how it impacted on all of them. I enjoyed the way they interacted with each other and the trust that tentatively developed between them. The storyline ran at a steady pace and they had some hot sexy times that weren't OTT. The descriptive mountain setting was easy to picture too.
There were a couple of ho hum moments. Pyotr, an experienced KGB/CIA double agent gave up his secrets to Joe and Tanner a bit too easily and missed who the 'baddie' was although it seemed quite obvious from early on. Tanner also seemed to get off quite lightly as well despite what he had planned to do.
There was some action but it wasn't edge of the seat stuff and had a satisfactory conclusion that wasn't drawn out.
I haven't read this author before but based on this I think I will give another of her books a try.
