Hope is Not a Strategy: More Stories from the Four Horsemen Universe (Four Horsemen Tales Book 8) Kindle Edition
It’s the Twenty-Second Century. The galaxy has opened up to humanity as a hyperactive beehive of stargates and new technologies, and we suddenly find ourselves in a vast playground of different races, environments, and cultures. There’s just one catch: we are pretty much at the bottom of the food chain, and there’s only one way for humanity to move up—by becoming mercenaries.
In every mercenary’s life, though, there comes a time when things go wrong and even the best laid plans go awry. When they do, though, the best mercs fall back and work out new plans, and you can bet on one thing—hope is not their strategy. Whether you’re a kid looking to get off your planet, or an unarmed merc facing an overwhelming force, or even the sole survivor of a pirate attack, there’s always an edge—and it’s up to the merc to find and exploit it!
Edited by bestselling authors and universe creators Chris Kennedy and Mark Wandrey, “Hope is Not a Strategy” includes all-new stories in the Four Horsemen universe by some of the bestselling Indie authors currently in the business. These authors take on various aspects of the universe, giving you additional insight into a galaxy that isn’t at war…but definitely isn’t at peace. There’s only one thing for sure in the 4HU—anything’s possible…for a fistful of credits!
Inside, you’ll find:

--Paul Vatt, Internet Reviewer "This collection of 4HU stories is fabulous. The contributing authors have outdone themselves. The Golden Ticket brought back a flood of memories of my previous life as a paratrooper. That first story set the standard and the rest live up to it. This is definitely a must-read." --Sundown, Internet Reviewer

About the authors
I am a retired Marine infantry colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife Kiwi and twin five-year-old girls, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie. I am a two-time Nebula Award Finalist, a two-time Dragon Award Finalist, and a USA Today Bestselling writer.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 100 titles published, 80 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, "Fire Ant" was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella, "Integration" was a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel, and "Sentenced to War" was a finalist for the 2021 Dragon Award in the same category.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America where I'm serving as the Nebula Award Commissioner.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, writing, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, taking my girls fishing, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
“Tales of heroism and wonder are important. They help us remember the best parts of being human, teach us to rise above what we are to become what we can be. I aspire to tell those sorts of stories. Thank you for being a part of the journey!”
The multiple-USA today bestselling author of over a hundred science-fiction and fantasy novels, Kevin McLaughlin writes daily to share stories of adventure, hope, and heroism.
International bestselling author of military sci-fi, space opera, and zombie apocalypse, Mark Wandrey is also the only 4 time DragonCon Dragon Award finalist!

His favorite is military science fiction. However, he also pens Zombie Apocalypse (ZA) in the form of his 2016 Dragon Finalist "A Time to Die", book 1 in the Turning Point series. The series is complete and available on Amazon, continuing with Book 2, "A Time to Run", and finishing with "A Time to Live".
His most successful works to date can be found in the Four Horsemen Universe (4HU), which he created and now shares with a slew of incredible authors including his partner and publisher, Chris Kennedy. If you need to reach me I can be found at chris@chrisfoxwrites.com. I’d love to hear from you!
Once upon a time I was an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. These days I write stories about dragons tearing apart starships, and gods blowing up planets.
I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.
Wait you’re still reading?
Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 42 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in beautiful Marin County. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.
I’ve published over 20 novels, and have a series of non-fiction books that teach writers how to duplicate my success. I’m far better known for the Write Faster, Write Smarter series, and have spoken all over the country about writing to market, making your writing a habit, and quitting your day job to become an author.
My true love though? Science fiction and fantasy. I love worldbuilding. I love storytelling. I’ve been playing D&D since I was six, and they’ll have to pry my d20 from my cold, dead hands =D
A retired police officer, Josh Hayes is the author of the Valor Trilogy, the Tranquility series w/ Devon C Ford, Stryker’s War (Galaxy’s Edge), and The Terra Nova Chronicles w/ Richard Fox, along with numerous short stories.
His debut solo novel, Edge of Valor, was a finalist for the 2020 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel.
Ever since he watched his first Star Trek episode (TNG not OS), Josh has loved science fiction. Watching it, reading it, and writing it. He grew up a military brat, affording him the opportunity to meet several different types of people, in multiple states and foreign countries. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Air Force and served for six years, before leaving military life to work in law enforcement. During his time with the Wichita Police Department, Josh served as a patrol officer, bicycle unit, community policing officer, and was an assistant bomb technician on the Bomb Squad.
His experiences in both his military life and police life have given him unique glimpses into the lives of people around him and it shows through in the characters he creates.
Josh is also the creator and president of Keystroke Medium, a popular YouTube show and podcast focused on the craft of writing. Kacey Ezell was born in South Dakota in 1977. Her parents joined the US Air Force in 1984, and she grew up around the world on various military bases. When she was seven, her mother gave her a copy of Anne McCaffrey's Dragondrums, and shortly thereafter, Kacey decided that she wanted to be a dragonrider when she grew up. In 1999, she followed her parents into the "family business" and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy before going to pilot training. As dragons were in short supply at the time, she reasoned that flying aircraft was the next best thing. She earned her wings in 2001, and has over 2500 hours in the UH-1N and Mi-17 helicopters.
From the time she was a small child, Kacey made up stories to tell to her friends and family. In 2009, while deployed to Iraq, she wrote the military-themed supernatural story "Light", which was accepted for publication in the Baen Books anthology Citizens.
She is the author of the 2-time Dragon Award nominated alternate history series "The Psyche of War" about psychic women dealing with... well... war. She wrote "The Romanov Rescue" (Baen) along with Tom Kratman and Justin Watson, with some help from Monalisa Foster. In addition, she and Christopher L. Smith are currently collaborating with John Ringo on a post-apocalyptic steampunk trilogy from Baen, The first book, "Gunpowder and Embers" came out in 2019. She is a core author of the Four Horseman Universe from Seventh Seal Press (Chris Kennedy Publishing), where she co-authored the Depik Trilogy with Marisa wolf, and the bestselling "Weaver" with Mark Wandrey. Finally, she and Larry Correia have edited "Noir Fatale," and "No Game For Knights," both bestselling noir anthologies from Baen Books. They are currently working on a third anthology due out in 2024.
Kacey writes science fiction, fantasy, horror, noir, romance... etc. fiction. She lives with her husband, two daughters, and one large orange boy cat.

Craig is a million-selling author of science fiction (post-apocalyptic, military sci-fi, and space opera), thrillers, and non-fiction.
Craig retired from the Marine Corps after a long career in the military intelligence community, having worked with most of the U.S. Government's three-letter agencies. After a short stint with physical security, Craig went to law school, graduated summa cum laude, and went into business consulting. From intelligence, to the inner workings of company board rooms, to on-the-ground leadership, Craig has seen it firsthand.
His books are an extension of his experience, putting the trials and tribulations of a fast-paced world into your hands. Whether in Science Fiction, Thrillers, Fantasy, or even his Non-Fiction, you'll find consistent themes of justice and doing right by those who are counting on their leaders. Leadership is a service, not a crown to lord over others.
No matter where Craig went, he always had a book with him. Thanks to 21st Century technology, He now has thousands of books at his fingertips and with him wherever he goes. How many books would he have read on deployments had he not had to carry a physical book?
No one is encumbered like that now. Craig loves the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. He has been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, Craig aspires to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared him to.
Through a bizarre series of events, Craig ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. He never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. He and his wife get to watch the northern lights from their driveway. Their dog has lots of room to run, just until temperatures reach fifty below zero. They have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It’s all part of the give and take of life. If they didn’t have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Kevin Steverson is a retired veteran of the U.S. Army. With several best selling novels, including the Salvage Title Trilogy, picked up for development into feature film, he is also a published songwriter. When he is not on the road, he can be found in the foothills of the NE Georgia mountains writing his next story.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI continue to be amazed at the quality of these anthologies in the 4HU. I shouldn't be too surprised given the authors chosen to write these stories, but considering how many anthologies there have been... it's quite the accomplishment. I tip my hat to all involved as they continue to fill in and expand this rich, diverse, and growing universe.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOne of the things I love the most about the 4 Horsemen Universe, and the writers who participate is the way they manage to spin this giant narrative together. Even though you can hear their individual voices, they blend perfectly in a way that keeps the universe vibrant, different, yet comfortably familiar.
With good editing, superb world building, and excellent attention to detail these authors have banded together to create something that has become a fixture in my household.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEvery story here was at least good, and a lot of them were great! I'd love to see full novels based on a number of the stories here, especially the Besquith ones. I don't always like short stories, but I definitely liked these
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExcellent collection of short stories, some that touch the mind, some the heart. The stories from the aliens perspective, struggling to understand humans and vice versa. For an old warrior the story of striving to complete the mission really hit home.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere are a lot more species in the universe than are dreamt of in our philosophy.
The problem is most of them see us as either predator or prey.
Finding friends among that group is tough. Only one little girl manages the trick.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is another tremendous collection of short stories in the Fiur Horseman universe. They are all great and you meet a diverse cast of characters. I can see many of these characters showing up again. Be sure and get this collection and cash your golden ticket!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2023Format: Audible AudiobookVerified PurchaseWhy is this book disappointing to me? Simply stated a personal preference. I am not a big fan of short stories because they alway leeave me hanging. The first story is brilliant, as far as it goes, but at the end, I'm asking where is the rest of the story. That said, If you are a fan of short stories, this is probably an excellent choice, but not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expands The 4HU
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSeveral things I like about these collections. Firstly they are good tales of adventure, exploration and survival. Secondly I can examine the wares of authors I've not read before. Finally we get a wider look at the 4HU. Shorts from previous collections also can become full length novels. Something that snagged my attention in this one is the Roswell crash. If the US military had examples of gal tech from the 1950s and a galactic it's surprising that the alpha contracts went so badly. The intel about various merc races would have been useful. MW was the author who is a co-creator which means this could turn out to have big consequences in later main sequence novels. Such reveals have happened in previous collections. I'll be signing up for the fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little snacks!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMore red diamonds from the Four Horsemen universe! Each is a well crafted tale from established authors.
My favourite are Earworm which means the Riedel name is known through the galaxy and Survivor by Kacey Eziel that shows us that the Besquith arent just the blood thirsty psychopaths we think they are!
