Another 5 star book from the Black Hearts series and this one is the one that I have been DYING to read!
You should read both Her Vengeful King to be able to follow along with the continuation of Cal and Haley's story and certainly read His Remorseful King because the events in that story run parallel to this novella.
Ok now that this is all out of the way...HOLY CRAP! This was not what I expected (and I know I say that a lot but in all fairness I did not have any of the events that happened in this story on my bingo card for this series). This novella runs simultaneously with the end of His Remorseful King and certainly fills in a lot of detail that was not hinted at. I was blown away seeing the events of the ending of His Remorseful King played out in His Vengeful Queen because what happened did not happen in any way that I imagined. This book was so well crafted in terms of playing off of Paddy's story that for a second, it had me guessing if I missed any clues in that story that would have hinted at the events in this story. It was that well plotted and something I certainly wish I could read again for the first time!
Cal and Haley, as always, were fantastic. There was a much deeper dive this time into their relationship and it was nice to see their relationship grow and strengthen even more from the growth where we pick up with these two characters. Further insecurities arise and it was nice to see them handled in a different way than previously- plus it led to some super spicy moments that were just to DIE for. I know this isn't the end of these two because we certainly will see more in the sibling's stories but I will forever wish that we had just more stories of them in the series- I fell for them as a couple last year when I DEVOURED Her Vengeful King and have not stopped falling (and don't think I ever will).
My surprise for this story (other than the series of events in this story that knocked my out of my seat) was Declan. Previously he just seemed like a background brother, one that showed up briefly but you never really got to know much about him. He did play more of an integral role in this story and really had me dreaming of when he gets his own happily ever after- hopefully we get to see that one soon because I don't think I can wait!
