A vigilante prepared for war. Thirteen kidnapped criminals. One child still missing.
Julian Lime has given his foster sister a baby, but when her dead body is discovered in the garage of a brothel, and the gangsters find Russel’s crib is empty, the city descends into turmoil. Death is inevitable, and Julian is astounded to learn that the murders he is catalysing are the murders of his friends and warriors.
Someone out there is abducting the most influential lieutenants in his empire. As the key soldiers continue to disappear, Julian realises that killer must be someone from his organisation. The Imposter must be one of the remaining deviants in Julian’s home, and there aren’t many deviants left with the knowledge needed to bring down the organisation without an army.
Thirteen criminals are taken, and you, the reader, can watch their final days of life. You can hear every confession and smell the fear on the depraved as The Imposter forces them to empty their bank accounts. “This is a very entertaining and creatively done book. It is very well paced and well structured. Even though it's written from multiple first-person perspectives, it's also very clear which character you're hearing from. Some of them were thoroughly despicable pieces of work and I was glad to see them get what they had coming.”

“There's a whole host of characters to follow in this, from the Croatian with the prosthetic leg to the young genius who runs the organisation (and also has some quite novel views on criminology).
Once I got over the initial shock factor of The Imposter I found it a riveting and compelling read. It's well written as well with a style that propels the reader forward. Recommended.”

About the Author. Daniel Norrish.
Hi, I'm Dan, and I write Australian kidnap thrillers.
I focus on action with a bunch of twists woven into every story.
I prefer writing kidnapping fiction over other crime sagas because I reckon there are more ways to surprise the reader.
Kidnapping victims fight back, and sometimes, they escape...

How can kidnap thrillers overcome murder mysteries?
- SURVIVORS. The victims in kidnap thrillers can escape.
- MOVEMENT. A kidnapping can stretch years across whole continents while detectives search for a person they know is still desperate to be rescued.
- VIGILANTES. Revenge is sweetest when a passionate, illegal ally decides to hunt for the kidnappers.

About the author

When Dan's not tapping away on a computer keyboard, he brews black beer and watches rugby. He has a degree in "Professional Writing and Publishing," as well as Honours in creative writing from Curtin University in Western Australia.
His goal is to produce suspenseful, intriguing crime fiction that propels the reader through engaging landscapes with constant action and unforeseeable surprises. Stephanie Saxon, the protagonist of "The Bodies We Won't Bury," is crafted to be foolish and, at times, irritating. Readers might find themselves hating the violent detective as she makes the wrong decisions over and over again, leading to the horrible murders of undeserving innocents. Sometimes, a detective is given more power than they deserve. Saxon is based on an age bracket, so readers might recognise the impulsivity and harsh demeanour of an angry young adult. An angry young adult with a police badge, taser and a secret, unlicensed revolver.
Kidnapping interests Dan more than murder and other crimes, primarily because kidnapping can build more suspense. Are they dead? Are they being held prisoner? In "The Imposter," thirteen kidnap victims tell the story of their experiences with a masked vigilante. The reader is presented with the perspectives of the captives, most of whom are murdered before they can share their knowledge with anyone other than the reader.
Dan is a disability support worker, and he plans to write a kidnap novel involving a young person with a disability. With his experiences from the field and memories of all the awesome personalities he has worked with, he plans to pump the novel with as much laughter and joy as misery and terror.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018I want to start by saying this book is unique. The author is a wonderful storyteller. Each section is dedicated to one character's point of view and divided into chapters. I would like to say that the sections are many short stories, but they connect brilliantly. The characters are criminals and the author has written them into life. They are so well rounded that you begin to feel you know everything about the character. This is one of those books that you want to read every word. I was invested through the entire novel, trying to figure out who the imposter was. I was not even close to guessing. I can't stress enough the uniqueness of the novel and the writing style. I enjoyed it. Each time I had to stop reading, I could not wait to get back to it. I have to warn you that this is not a novel for the squeamish. It is full of low life characters who partake in murder, drugs, prostitution, and so on. Interestingly, there are no good guys. Like I said, this novel is different from anything I have ever read. If you like a lot of action and thrill. Here it is.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2018This story drew me in immediately through its narration style. It's all in first person, even though there are multiple characters that give their own accounts. At first I was even a bit wary of beginning this novel based on its description. I feared I was going to keep reading snuff stories from each victim's POV, which I know will turn dry and boring after two or three accounts. Thankfully, that turned out to not be true.
I think the story started off solidly enough and seemed to have a central plot of trying to find out who the impostor is. But I think the plot sort of became scattered and less defined toward the end, even though the whole book was very entertaining. If reading about violence, prostitution, pedophiles, murderers and basically any human savagery, this book isn't for you. If you enjoy crime novels and being an armchair detective, this is perfect! You have the opportunity to figure out who the impostor is yourself, although I don't think that it was revealed properly at the end. it almost felt like i was cheated, because the impostor wasn't revealed within the story, but outside of it, after the ending. i won't reveal anything here with spoilers, but i also think that leaving out obviously clues that anybody would notice about the impostor was also sort of a cheat. especially for someone as brilliant and intellectual as julian lime. he would ahve figured it out immediately. actually that's what i expected. i expected for him to become a detective and find who's doing this, or for him to go on a rampage and kill everyone that works for him, performing an extermination.
nevertheless, this writer's style is brilliant, and coupled with the host of very colorful characters, the story moves with wicked wit, dialogue and visceral imagery.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2018Writing this review isn’t going to be easy—this is such an unusual book! As the description says, it’s written from the first person POV of thirteen victims of a secretive killer and thief who is out to dismantle an Australian criminal empire operated by a young genius named Julian Lime. Each victim’s story starts with chapter one, as if they are all separate books, but taken together they tell the complete story.
The author does an amazing job of creating characters with an incredible number of layers—not one of them is cardboard. They are all despicable people who steal, hurt, and kill for a living, and several even have sick perversions, but at the same time, they all have—well, most of them—their good points as well. They are among the worst examples of humanity, but they ARE human.
I lost track of the body count, since besides the assassin’s kills, there is also a gang war going on between Julian Lime’s organization and another criminal gang, so plenty of action. And trying to figure out WHO the assassin is—well, good luck with that! I made an educated guess, but I was only partially right. Everything else was a major surprise!
Can you tell I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book? One final thing—it could stand a copyedit. That usually kills my enjoyment of a book, but it didn’t put a dent in it with this one, and in spite of the errors, I have to give it a 4.5, rounded up, of course, to a 5. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery thriller.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2018This is a very entertaining and creatively done book. It is very well paced and well structured. Even though it's written from multiple first-person perspectives, it's also very clear which character you're hearing from. Some of them were thoroughly despicable pieces of work and I was glad to see them get what they had coming. Others were what some call punch clock villains: on the job, they did whatever their jobs required, and since their jobs were being criminals, they did bad things. Off the job, they were pretty much regular people. The characters were individual and interesting. I didn't spend a great deal of effort in trying to figure out who the imposter was. The story was so entertaining I just wanted to enjoy the ride, and I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019Fascinating!
I would have used the word “unique,” but too many others have used it already. Though it, too, is an apt description.
This book is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of action, much of involving people dying, or already dead. I guess that’s the nature of this type of thriller.
The uniqueness lies in the first person narrative from the point of view of a number of the characters, many of whom are already dead. This is a fascinating perspective which I don’t think I’ve ever seen used before.
The book is relatively short (though not too short) and easy to read, as long as you remembered to take your heart medicine. It’s not a bedtime story.
This is the kind of book I’d like to see go somewhat viral. It’s such a rare concept and so well written that I can imagine it taking off like that.
Great work, Daniel Norrish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Violent and stylish
I recommend a strong stomach to navigate the roiling criminal seas of The Imposter. Packed with violence and very bad guys and girls, Daniel Norrish’s novel features a unique style that gives the reader an inside peek into a multitude of criminal minds. Everyone gets his or her say before the perhaps excessive brutality. But there is someone out there – or should I say, in there – with a strange conscience. Who is it? Good luck figuring it out, but it’s worth the try. The really inventive style drove this book up to four stars for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, dark and a fascinating insight into modern mafia culture
I wasn't sure I'd like this novel at first. It started off incredibly gritty, and grittiness is something I tend to shy away from. But as the novel progressed, I found myself more and more interested in the characters and the whole premise behind this book: discovering who the imposter is that's endangering the overarching mafioso organisation.
Set it modern Australia, the style of this book is a little difficult to define. I'd call it mosaic perhaps, following multiple characters through their own personal stories, with each subsequent character being related in some way to the previous one. I can't think of a similar novel, but it reminded me a lot of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in film. With the difference being that while Lock Stock is a heist, this is structured more like whodunnit mystery. The mosaic structure also reminded me a lot of films like Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Sin City.
There's a whole host of characters to follow in this, from the Croatian with the prosthetic leg to the young genius who runs the organisation (and also has some quite novel views on criminology).
Once I got over the initial shock factor of The Imposter I found it a riveting and compelling read. It's well written as well with a style that propels the reader forward. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, diverting read
I enjoyed this book. I liked how it dealt with each character's journey in turn, but they all interacted together and pushed the story forward. That the story was presented this way really tickled me.
The violence - not my cup of tea, but because it happened to bad people who'd done bad things, it felt ok (a bit of a guilty pleasure, Dextre-style). It did get a bit much for me on occasion, but people who don't mind violence will enjoy it.
The story/plot/pacing moved along at a good clip, holding my attention. Most characters were interesting and although kooky, felt authentic and engaging. Not all of them, though. Some characters really weren't believable or realistic, and that put me off a bit. This, and the occasional odd word choices and phrasing is the reason I've given it four stars.
It was however definitely a fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crime and punishment
I've never read a book quite like this one. Criminals talk about their crimes and many of them are already dead. Each person comes up with a unique point of view in the story and it's all stitched together. There is how and there is crime and there are deviants. If you like crime them this one is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who's after the mysterious Mafia Boss?
Honestly, I loved everything about this book up until the last few chapters.
All the characters we get introduced to, each and everyone with their particular voice and perspective on what's happening, all the little substories. It's really hard to put this book down once you started it, it's a well written, gripping, dark thriller that will force you to turn page after page to try and understand who's behind the recent attacks to the mysterious Australian Mafia King.
However, and that's my only personal note, towards the end the book loses a bit of its original roughness and violence, to, somehow, morally justify (?) the unknown killer; while at the same time reducing the so-far pretty smart young mafia boss to a shadow of his former self: a highly educated boy that's managed to plan and build and incredible criminal empire all while remaining safe and unknown to the law and even the majority of people that work for him, goes out on a full-on gun fight regardless of the consequences.
Still, this is without a doubt one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time, a real fast paced, action-packed page-turner that will hook you from the very first page.
Highly recommended!
