The Innovation Revelation: A story about how to satisfy customer needs (Creating Products and Services) Kindle Edition
A real-world guide to taking a customer-focused approach to creating products and services that people actually want and are happy to pay for.
One of the biggest frustrations in today’s workplace is the time wasted building the wrong thing. Fortunately, there is another way to work, a way that leads to more effective teams, happier customers and increased profits.
There’s just one problem. If you’re not the boss, it can be challenging, and scary, to step up and suggest change, especially when you’re not sure exactly how to achieve it. If you are the boss, it can be even harder.
It’s an issue that author David Lowe, a business coach and trainer, knows all too well. Lowe has helped hundreds of individuals, teams and organisations learn how to use Scrum and Kanban in the real world through coaching and training. Now, in The Innovation Revelation, he distils the common problems and mistakes found when organisations try to “become agile”, then layers on easy-to-understand solutions and current best practices to help guide readers to a brighter future.
You should read this book if...
- You are involved in building products and services (and want to learn how to generate value early and minimise risk)
- You want to know the basics of Agile or Scrum (and how to avoid the most common mistakes)
- You have ever wondered what service design is
- You want to know why being customer-focused makes sense
Using proven techniques refined through working with a wide range of clients across many industries (including Ford, Ministry of Justice, NHS, John Lewis and Shelter), Lowe uses the power of storytelling to introduce the basic concepts of Agile, Scrum and Service Design.
Written as a light-hearted fictional story, The Innovation Revelation follows Charlie Blades, a desperately unhappy IT professional struggling to survive in his job at one of the UK's top department stores. He is on the cusp of walking away from it all when he realises they've been doing everything wrong.
With a little help, Charlie tries new ways of working that break from the conventional approach, in a last-ditch attempt to eradicate ineffective business practices and traditions and save his department from being offshored.
Join Charlie on his journey to learn:
- How to get your organisation working smarter
- How to engage your customers so you can create better products and services
- How to generate value early and minimise the risk of failure
- The key steps for introducing Scrum and why an Agile mindset will help your organisation succeed
- How to avoid the common mistakes that many organisations make
The Innovation Revelation reveals what an iterative and incremental approach to developing products and services looks like and how this way of working can benefit you and your organisation.
Get this quick and practical book today to start your journey towards introducing agile and service design to your organisation, and begin better serving your customers.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"This book makes the challenge of understanding your customers and designing the products they need sound utterly straightforward. No previous knowledge is required as you follow Charlie on his own journey of learning how to research user needs, lead co-creation workshops, design new services AND persuade senior management that this is the right approach for the business. With its engaging and entertaining approach, The Innovation Revelation helps both beginners and experienced professionals remember what's important about the complex world of service design without letting jargon or complicated processes become a blocker." - James Thornett, VP Product Development at Ascential PLC
"The Innovation Revelation is a light but comprehensive overview of the innovation process, incorporating plenty of theory and helpful specific practices. The story format keeps the content accessible and relatable, this book serves as an excellent introduction to the real life world of innovation for people in any business." - Daniel Susser, Scrum Master, giffgaff
"The Innovation Revelation will be helpful and fun to read for business people and internal teams who are thinking about working in a different way. I think it will also be useful for experienced agile teams that have mastered the 'how' of delivery, but now want to make sure they are also getting the 'what' right, building something that their users need. This isn't abstract theory or framework evangelism, this is practical business storytelling at its best." - Caspar Below, Head of Digital, Shelter
"This book on agility and organisational change is fun and quick to read, and gives you knowledge that you can apply immediately and effectively. Highly recommended." - Simon Powers, Founder, AWA

5.0 out of 5 stars Design thinking
I enjoyed The Innovation Revelation by David Lowe as it guides you through the thought process of design thinking and building customer empathy. The focus on how to innovate within an organization by going to end users and finding out what they need is a good read for any product manager or people looking to start the journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s a revelation!
Written in an easy to digest style, The Innovation Revelation picks you up and takes you on a journey along with the main character, Charlie Blades, covering what ordinarily might be considered a dry topic in a way that manages to be a fun and is a good introduction to all of the topics referenced in the preface.
Spoiler alert though - there are no sex scenes and no one dies!
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting the author David Lowe, you’ll find plenty of his sharp wit and punchy humour as he draws your attention to people’s behaviours. And if you work in IT, you’ll notice some of the characters and some of the common annoyances that David references in the story.
The first few chapters hooked me in rather quickly but it wasn’t long before the resident “know-it-all”, Sarah, got a bit irritating - a bit too much of a clever clogs for my liking but Charlie Blades didn’t seem phased by her sometimes patronising manner.
I then got a bit distracted by the use of two diamonds that seemed unnecessary to pictorially explain the “method” given that only two sides of each diamond were ever annotated (Discover -> Design (problem definition) Protoype & Test -> Implement (solution)) so that still has me perplexed as to why you’d use a diamond rather than a point to point straight line. Was the idea that this should somehow mirror Demming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act circle of Continuous Improvement? We might never know and that’s likely to be a mystery that remains unsolved for me.
There are some character names that had my eyes wide somewhat in disbelief but I’m told that could just be my crazy mind.
This book is a great case study of the agile methodology which makes for a good read regardless of whether you are new to the topic or have been working in the industry for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to promote a user-centred approach
This is a guide to agile/user-centred thinking, masquerading as a story. What is particularly great about it is that it's a gentle introduction to the logic and principles of an approach that sounds complicated and risky to the uninitiated but is in fact a great way to simplify and reduce risk. I have already recommended that colleagues with stakeholders/budget holders who are resistant to user-centred product and service development, use this book to help persuade them because I think it may really help to open their minds. It's an easy read, so not too taxing for anyone either!
Another plus is that it's largely jargon-free so that concepts like "queuing theory" are slipped in as a natural part of the main characters learning journey. Agile suffers from an alienating amount of terminology so, by using plain language, I think this book will encourage more people to adopt a user-centred mindset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and educational
This book covered much more than I expected. David has given a great example of a transformation journey and included characters which all readers will be able to relate to. The detail provided on building a product felt more like a living workshop than a text book. Dave has even provided some great examples of facilitation techniques used by the characters and the scrum intro to the workplace was fantastically precise.
I am adding this to the mandatory reading list to teams I work with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story on applying "doing things better"
Loved going on the Journey of solving problems. David captured the struggles and doubts we go through, and the courage required to take some steps out of our comfort zone. Dave also manages to show how support and ideas don't only need to be found at work, by intertwining family friends and meetups in the tale. Really struggled to put the book down. Recommend it to anyone who needs a refreshing view on betterment
