Inside (Death Row Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 462 ratings

All it took was a single moment for Anson Miller’s life to fall apart. His only hope of finding solid ground again is to uproot everything he knows and start over. New house, new job, new life. But will working on death row as a corrections officer in the country’s hardest and most acclaimed supermax prison be the right move? Or is he exchanging one hardship for something way worse? Twenty years ago, Bishop Ndiaye was a victim of wrong place, wrong time. The consequences landed him on death row. As hard as he fought to expose the truth behind his alleged crime, no one would hear him. No one would listen. He’s succumbed to his fate, hardened himself to prison life, and no longer hopes for a better tomorrow. For Bishop, there is no tomorrow. Death waits around the corner, and someday soon, he will be no more. Anson’s appearance in Bishop’s life changes everything. Anson lends Bishop more than an ear; he offers him friendship, compassion, and understanding. No one has ever gifted Bishop with more. The more they talk, the more they share. The more they share, the more their bond grows. But when their hearts open up to one another, the barrier in their way is far more than a steel door of a cell. It is life and death.

I loved this book with my whole heart. It started a bit slow but when it got going, oh man, it was epic. From about 50% on I cried so much. I just wanted Bishop free. I felt so bad for him. The worse part being this stuff really happens in real life. It was a riveting story and now I can't wait to read about their relationship outside the prison walls. Nicky is an amazing author. She writes extremely captivating tales.

This isn't your typical prison romance. At least what I read so far were either dark or sexy or both, presented in an enticing package.
Bishop's story feels more real. We see the daily lives of the inmates and their correction officers. What goes on behind the scenes. And despite the isolation, how little privacy the inmates get.

We see everything from Anson's pov, who relocated from Michigan to Texas on a whim, and went from working medium-security to supermax.
Most of the officers - Anson included - working on death row treat all the men like human beings. But they are still cautious.

Bishop is the silent type which makes him look more intimidating than he already is, given his size. He is fascinated with Anson, and over time and a few quick exchanges later Anson starts to relax around him and they develop a connection. Anson gets desperate to spend as much time with Bishop as he can. He knows he shouldn't let himself go down that road, but he can't stop himself.
I found the whole scenario really fascinating. It was interesting to see how Anson struggled with his feelings, and not to get involved. The outcome was not at all surprising but the lead-up to it was still tension-filled.

There is no sex in this book, but the yearning for touch more than makes up for it. Book 2 will be scorching once they get to that point.
I loved the secondary characters, especially Javier, who was working with Anson occasionally. They struck up a friendship immediately. Javier is such a Texan guy and I don't mean this in a bad way, quite the opposite. Anson could confide in him and Javier took it in stride.

This book is only one half of a story. No cliffy but they're not finished yet. The hard part will begins now for Bishop. It will be trying for both men. Can't wait to see them together.

Anson Miller is a gay prison guard who moves from Michigan to Texas after an attack leaves him at risk at the prison he had been at. The drastic change in locale comes with a definite change in his job duties as he begins working on death row at his new prison. There, he is quickly drawn to an inmate, Bishop Ndiaye, who was sentenced to death for the murder of an ex-girlfriend and her son.

While Anson makes many questionable decisions, the author does a good job of putting us in Anson's shoes and walking us through his motives. Javier's character and I were very much same page in our reactions to Anson's dumber ideas. My favorite thing about a Nicky James book, though, is she makes it make sense. I may not like everything that happens in her stories, but I always get it and I'm good with Anson overall. Her depictions of life on the row and the day to day of a prison guard seem very well researched and realistic, but I can't say how accurate they are. I greatly appreciate the slow burn of this story and Anson's never abusing his position of power for sexual relief. Bishop is a nicely developed character that I can't help but picture as John Coffey from The Green Mile, played by Michael Clarke Duncan in the movie. The characters are not at all alike, but the "Boss" thing and death row setting just kept taking my mind there. Since this installment focuses purely on Anson's point of view, there is some dimension lacking in Bishop, but I'm sure the sequel, written from Bishop's point of view, makes up for that.

Now for the frustrating bits. You know the opening sequence in Scary Movie 5 where Snoop Dogg and Mac Miller are talking about that horror movie with the cabin in the woods and neither of then think maybe they're thinking of The Cabin in the Woods? Anson was like that for me. All of his needing and wanting a lawyer to help him prove Bishop's innocence, but his Googling never led him to The Innocence Project??? I know they mostly work of wrongful convictions relying on bad DNA evidence, but there are other not for profit organizations that specifically focus on death penalty cases that I can't believe he couldn't find someone willing to take on the case for free. I don't know how any of that works, though, so maybe none of it's free. Ok. That's my next quibble. Ten grand is ALOT, but if you've committed to this course, charge it to a credit card or take out a loan asap because you KNOW time is of the essence. I've racked up debt for some frivolous things. I would not hesitate to do it if it actually helped someone I cared for and their life literally depended on it. The delays in finding a lawyer and getting that retainer drove me kind of nuts as it dragged out things that could have gone on after the legal process of appeal began. After such a long buildup, the ending with all the really important bits felt so rushed. I'm sure the sequel will help balance that out, too, but more could have been done to level this one out as a foundation for the duet of stories.

This novel was astounding with its story telling. The simmering heat gave me sunburn. The reader could feel the magnetism from both MCs. In reading it, it’s devastating because you know that even though this is fiction, the story is many inmates realities.

Bishop’s description is so delectable and the attraction between him and Anson is SMOLDERING!!

The kind of emotional intimacy displayed was addicting, I felt like a voyeur. The hurt, turmoil, and reliance tore my heart apart.

Anson DID upset me with his constant emotional outbursts and displays with colleagues/staff. In my head I’m thinking, YOU ARE GOING TO GET BISHOP IN TROUBLE!!! You’re going to get yourself ISOLATED from him!! WHY do you keep bringing unwanted attention to you two!?!

Sigh...but whatever. It didn’t take away from the plot, it just irked me.

Never knew words meant so much until you read it between both of the MCs. Inches of barrier, making it feel like an ocean apart.

Bishop deserves so much; such a beautiful kind soul. Anson is amazing & tenacious.

Such a luminescent read. Definitely a top 10 for me. Idk if I could reread it though, the angst and hurt make my allergies act up. Zyrtec please?

    Adieu.

This is a beautiful story, and it's beautifully written. It takes place in a prison on death row. I won't reveal too much, but it's a heartbreaking and yet a heartwarming story.
I had trouble putting this book down....Not necessarily because it's super high paced and all that kind of stuff, but it's truly a story that involves a lot of character development, a realistic view into the penal system and a brilliant plot. I can assure you you will feel a lot of heartache for both of the main characters. This is a must read, folks.
I'm just about to start the follow up titled "outside".

    Oh, my word!

What a roller coaster of a book. I am emotionally drained, in a good way.

Just finished reading Inside by Nicky James and had to pause for a little while to gather my thoughts.

My heart shattered for Bishop Ndiaye, who found himself on death row because of being at the wrong place and at the wrong time.

Enters Anson Miller, a corrections officer, who is instantly drawn to Bishop from the moment they first meet.

I can’t reveal much but this book is beautifully written and draws you in. Lots of nail-biting scenes and towards the end I cried and cried and smiled a lot.

Heading off to read book 2.

The narration by Nick J. Russo, as usual, is top-notch!

    Great job Nicky James.

Like all Nicky James’ books I’ve read until now, beside her compelling writing style, this is another amazing mix of empathy, respect for the complexity of human experiences, thorough factual research, a strong intrigue, and an inspiring representation of what love is, or can be. I’m just so grateful I stumbled upon her books.

Nicky James arrasou!

I have always loved Nicky's writing and this book is a great example of why. Her story telling is heart wrenching, her characters are complete and complex and I should have known better than to read a book when book 2 isn't out yet. I really should have known better. I need to hug Bishop so hard (it's okay, Anson said I could because Bishop deserves all the hugs he can get even if they are from a girl)
