Into the Abyss: A Violet Darger Novella (Violet Darger FBI Mystery Thriller) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,032 ratings

"Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster. For when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." -Friedrich Nietzsche

The Violet Darger series continues with this gripping novella, Into the Abyss.

Will
Violet Darger agree to a face to face meeting with the man who shot her?

Still awaiting trial, infamous serial killer
Leonard Stump has hinted at the locations of additional bodies — more desert graves waiting to be uncovered. He wants to talk, but he has one condition. Violet Darger must be present at the interview.

Now the pressure is on. Should Darger head to Vegas and sit down with Stump? Everyone else seems to think so.

It’s a chance to close some cases and give families closure, they say. A chance to learn something crucial about the criminal mind, they say. A chance to do something good.

So why does Darger feel like it’s all going to go terribly wrong?

While the Violet Darger novels can be read in any order,

I’ve read all the Violet Darger/Victor Loshak books and with each one, I get more invested in the characters. Violet is passionate about her work and much braver than I would ever be when confronting danger. This book brings Leonard Stump back into Violet’s life. She’s on leave from the FBI and trying to make up her mind about what to do when she gets a call that Stump is willing to give up the names and locations of some of this victims - but only if Violet comes to see him in jail. She doesn’t want to do it but figures she owes the parents of the victims to help them get closure. As usual, Stump has layer upon layer of games he wants to play. I recommend reading this series in order so you can see the development of Violet as an FBI agent and profiler.

Violet doesn't let anyone tell her what to do. She does what I right for the victim. She is one of my favorite characters . But I did miss Loshak. The two of them together are the best team of all of the books.

I love this series! The authors have, once again, delivered a compelling story for Violet Darger. The pacing of the story was excellent. My ONLY problem with this story is that it is TOO SHORT!!! I want more!!
I love all of Darger and Loshack’s sarcasm, too.
(So, if the Vargas/McBain team team could ignore their family/personal/professional lives and just crank out perfect Darger/Loshack novels 24/7...that would be great. —- But, until such a time when they decide to devote 100% of their waking and sleeping hours to solely entertain complete strangers, I will wait patiently for the next installment.)

This short novella takes Violet Darger back to Las Vegas and Leonard Stump, the serial killer who so nearly added her to his list of victims. As well as wrapping up some remaining loose ends in the Stump case, Darger also comes to terms with her own demons and sets up the next tranche of the series. But have we heard the last of Leonard Stump? I guess we’ll have to keep reading to find out.
