Junkyard Druid: A Druidverse Urban Fantasy Novel (The Colin McCool Paranormal Suspense Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 3,648 ratings

Some oaths are written in blood. Others in magic. After walking away from both, ex-druid Colin McCool finds himself ensnared in a faery queen's web of blackmail and revenge.

Rule #1 of being a druid: Never, EVER make deals with the Fae.

I'm Colin McCool, and the last time I dealt with the Fae, it cost me everything.

Since then, I've been hiding behind scrap iron and protective spells, pretending the supernatural world doesn't exist. No magic. No fae. No exceptions.

Then I got blackmailed into service—courtesy of a Faery Queen whose power makes even the Celtic gods nervous. Now I'm being dragged back into the life I swore to leave behind.

They say you can't go home again.

What they don't tell you is sometimes home comes looking for you—with teeth, claws, and curses...

"M.D. Massey's skillful storytelling and entertaining plot twists combine to deliver a page-turning experience that's sure to delight urban fantasy fans everywhere. If you're looking for your next riveting, supernatural adventure, this series delivers in spades!"

~ New York Times bestseller Joseph Nassise

"M.D. Massey's action-packed novels take the reader on a rollercoaster ride into an immersive universe of quirky gallows humor, nightmarish supernatural creatures, and high octane urban fantasy adventures. The pages are filled with paranormal suspense and a host of monstrous grotesques in plots that teem with twists and turns. And in all this perfectly streamlined chaos, one thing's for sure; Colin McCool's never going to stop fighting until he's saved Austin, Texas, and most likely the entire world."

~ Kit Hallows, Author of The Order of Shadows Series

"MD Massey's Druidverse is the perfect playground for urban fantasy fans who enjoy what we've come to expect in excellent storytelling from the genre. Fast pacing. Relatable characters you want to root for. 'Bad guys' you love to root against. With plenty of supernatural elements, mythology, and non-stop action, his world is richly crafted and complex, never feeling bogged down in the details--just how urban fantasy should be told. Master storytellers are able to balance excitement, anticipation, and suspense over a long series--and that's exactly what MD does in the Colin McCool books. A must-read!"

~ Paul Sating, Author of the Zodiac series

"M.D. Massey offers bantering humor and action-packed adventure reminiscent of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files... a wonderful read with a snarky hero, quirky characters, bizarre creatures, and dangerous situations."

Lot's of monsters, magic, fast moving, with Celtic history
Colin is a decent young man with a very rough past. In the short time that Jessie was part of the book, I really liked her character. Belledonna is a strong women but not someone I could relate to. I don't care much for Finnagas. Life is tough and its hard to believe that as long as he has lived, he can't find a different way to handle his pain. Not a great mentor and I don't blame Colin for being mad at him. The book was full of history and very interesting. The title alone was catchy. The book is well written and each character is well developed. At first we are overwhelmed with a lot of information but it is important.

I very much enjoyed this book, but it was pretty short--I read it in about two and a half hours (but I am a fast reader). You do get a good sense of the MC, Colin, but, when the author starts trying to explain all the Irish myths in a paragraph summary, it's just an information dump that is poured out on the reader. The Irish Gaelic names, which, unless you speak Gaelic or are Irish or studied Irish myth or Gaelic, you are pronouncing in your head incorrectly, are sometimes too much alike to keep straight. And I actually studied Irish mythology at Oxford in England, which was the only reason I knew what the author was talking about (and also how I know you're pronouncing those names incorrectly--they don't sound how they're spelled--believe me). To be fair to the author, it's hard to fit centuries of mythology into a one or two paragraph summary, and he did a pretty good job of it, but, if the book had been longer and fleshed out more, he could have done a better job of it. I also really did not like the time jumping from chapter to chapter. Chapter one is more like a Prologue -- three years ago -- but then you have present day, then a countdown since the day a tragedy occurred, which goes something like, eight months, two days since 'tragedy.' I got into the swing of it, but not until five or six chapters in, and it was annoying. I see why the author did it--neither the flashbacks nor the primary plot were fleshed out enough to be a book on their own--but they could have been.

However, Colin McCool is a likable character (if a little too naive to be believable, and the reader can relate to and empathize with him. I would read other books in this series, and I recommend this book to those who enjoy an angst-ridden, almost anti-hero, with a huge chip on his shoulder and a world of hurt in his heart.

This is a stand alone story. It does not end in a cliffhanger. There is foreshadowing for another book, which the author says is coming. There is little swearing. There is one non-graphic scene of consensual sex, but everything else is heavy flirting and mild innuendo.

Colin is a young man with a problem. Trained as a hunter, he and his girlfriend, another hunter, are pushed by their mentor, a 2000 year old druid, into hunting something that turns out to be more than they can handle. When the fight goes poorly, he discovers he's been cursed and turns into a hulk-type berserker, killing everyone and thing in his path, including his girlfriend--who may be haunting him.

Threatened into accepting a job from Maeve, queen of the fae, he tries to balance returning to college, finding the object Maeve wants, and handling his drunken, drug addicted mentor.

Colin is a likeable character. Younger than usual in these type of stories, we see him struggling to overcome his crushing guilt as he attends therapy, and talking about not enabling his mentor. This is not to say the book is full of self-discovery angst. Instead, it just has the ring of a young man trying to live a typical life, failing through no fault of his own, and being damned annoyed about it.

Colin's world is richly populated with well known and lesser known people and creatures. There's the quartet of red caps who seem to be stuck in a bad 80's version of the Sopranos, the bar keep who is the head of the local vampires, the obligatory circle of witches/wizards with whom he has a mutual lack of admiration, various strange creatures from Irish mythology, werewolves, and a woman friend who shrouds herself so well in don't-look-at-me spells that people think he's talking to himself when he's having coffee with her. All of these creatures and people are integrated easily into the story, and make sense when they show up.

The only thing this reader felt could be improved was that some explanations were a bit overlong.

This story was an excellent read; lighter than others in this genre without sacrificing plot or characters. This reader looks forward to the next book.

Great Urban Fantasy: this book has all I look for in a good urban fantasy series: good characters, new interesting spin on magic that ties in old myths and legends, great plot twists in the mystery that unravels, and a touch of humor here and there. I'm hooked, and continuing on to the next book in the series! I recommend you do the same!

For guy supposedly limited in magic, Colin McCool can pull off seriously bad assed magical stuff in a fight. And believe me, for a druid that professes to shy away from hardcore fighting, he manages just fine in landing himself in the midst of just every such event, willingly or not.
Small wonder, considering the acquaintances that he keeps, such as a bartender that is a vampire that bats for the other team, a neurotic fay girl friend, another gorgeous, hot vampire woman that is a seriously bad one to tangle with in a fight, the fae queen Maeve with secretive designs of her own for Collin McCool and, of course, otherworldly creatures galore in constant opposition to McCool.
Junkyard Druid is an urban fantasy that will have you entranced with the gritty quality of the main characters, even if you have to suspend disbelief here and there simply because it is so much fun following the antics of Collin McCool...such as his enduring love affair with a ghost. Enjoy!

I have to admit that I've had this book on my shelf for a while. Why didn't I read it? Because, having read the prequel, I knew I'd love it and wanted to save it for the perfect rainy day. M.D. Massey did not disappoint. He brought the mystery, the humour, the paranormal and the heart. This was everything I could want in this book. Colin is in a world of pain after a deep loss. Massey does not run through this and have him running into someone else's arms. He plays the pacing just right. The characters in this book have their flaws and dreams. Hemi is so downright likeable I was just grinning. This book really deserves the five stars. M.D. Massey is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.
P.S. Thank you M.D. Massey for book covers where the hero wears a shirt.
