KILL BOX (The Zulu Virus Chronicles Book 2 of 3): A Black Flagged Thriller Series Spin-Off (The Black Flagged Series) Kindle Edition
"Told from a ground level perspective, the Zulu Virus Chronicles shatters all genre conventions."
KILL BOX (The Zulu Virus Chronicles Book 2)
A BLACK FLAGGED THRILLER SERIES SPIN-OFF
A LETHAL BIOWEAPON HAS BEEN RELEASED ACROSS AMERICA.
With their daring escape plan thwarted at the last possible moment, HOT ZONE's motley band of survivors faces a worst-case scenario. Forced to take refuge near the epicenter of the bioweapons outbreak, deep inside in a city gone mad, THEIR TIME IS RUNNING OUT.
Unable to slow or adequately contain the infected population, the government has triggered KILL BOX, a desperate and merciless contingency protocol.
HOT ZONE's survivors have less than twenty-four hours to escape the KILL BOX.
A Black Flagged Series Spin Off? How is that possible and why haven’t I heard about this before? All good questions. The simple answer is that I had been waiting for the completion of the core Black Flagged series to draw any serious attention to the link between the books. Mostly because of spoilers (whoever appears here obviously survives the core series), but also because I enjoyed letting readers discover the links on their own. I’ve received hundreds of emails expressing the “pleasant surprise” of discovering familiar names and links to the Black Flagged books. Now that the core series is completed, it’s time to properly unveil the links.
The Zulu Virus Chronicles is named after the “zulu” virus introduced (created by rogue scientist Dr. Anatoly Reznikov) in REDUX (Black Flagged Book 2). “ZVC” takes place roughly a decade and a half after the core Black Flagged series ends in 2009 (fictional book time). The Zulu Virus Chronicles are a frightening look at a mass-scale bioweapons attack against America, perpetrated by domestic terrorists, told from a number of very different perspectives. The good, the bad and those caught in the crossfire.
For Black Flagged series fans, I have no doubt you will enjoy this spin off. Several Black Flag operatives show up in the series (2nd and 3rd book), having spent the past decade hunting down the last remnants of a terrorist organization they had previously spent most of their careers fighting. Unfortunately for them, and the rest of the United States, Dr. Reznikov’s research survived their best efforts to destroy it—once again falling into the wrong hands.
Welcome to the HOT ZONE, and the ZULU VIRUS CHRONICLES!

An inexplicable wave of illness
Emergency rooms have been overrun by patients, most showing signs of neurological and cognitive impairment—some turning suddenly violent. The symptoms match a rare and lethal disease that affects less than 1 in 500,000 per year. In a single day, city emergency room doctors have seen more suspected cases of this rare disease than the world had seen the previous year.

A city falling apart
As infected citizens take to the streets with their erratic and violent behavior, the city's emergency responders are stretched to the breaking point. Ambulance crews and the police can no longer keep up with the never-ending flood of 911 calls. The city teeters of the edge of chaos and madness.

A government quarantine taken too far
Fleeing the city is no longer an easy option for the uninfected. The interstate surrounding the city has been designated a Federal Quarantine Boundary, enforced by local National Guard units. Beyond that, a far less forgiving quarantine line awaits. Escape from the Hot Zone will become more difficult by the hour-until it's all but impossible.

Editorial Reviews
From the Author
Two books into The Zulu Virus Chronicles, and I couldn't be happier with the trajectory of the series. You'll notice a familiar pattern in KILLBOX. The first few chapters revisit previously introduced characters that willmerge with the core group of survivors from HOT ZONE, each playing key orsupporting roles in the unfolding plot. Several new characters will appear, some very familiar to my Black Flagged readers--and they will prove pivotal asthe series evolves! Everyone is important in The Zulu Virus Chronicles at somepoint, their decisions and actions shaping the saga--even if they don't survive.
The end of KILL BOX leaves The Zulu Virus Chronicles world wide open, and I already have already started FIRE STORM (Book 3). I designed the seriesso I could pursue several storylines after KILL BOX, focusing on specificaspects of the plot. My intention is to write slightly more compact stories, and release them more frequently; building on the foundation established by HOTZONE and KILL BOX.
There's a greater conspiracy at work in The Zulu Virus Chronicles, which loosely ties in with one of my previous series--Black Flagged. I can'twait to tighten this knot. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Thank you for your continued readership and support. Without you, thesestories would never have seen the light of day.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am 65 years old, and I have been an inveterate reader from the age of 6. So I have almost 60 years of reading experience behind me … and not just a book or two a year. I read at least a book or two a month, and most times even more. So you need to listen to the advice of a man with SIXTY YEARS of reading experience behind him. You need to buy this book. In fact, you need to buy everything this man has written. Steven Konkoly is now my newest favorite author. He writes like no one else I’ve ever seen. The genre of military style adventure has just undergone an abrupt change, and it is never going to be the same again (You know the way it works ... with great success comes a great deal of copying). So with this 'change', I’ve become bitterly disappointed. Disappointed that this man cannot put his books out faster than he does.
I have read about books that claim non-stop action, but have never actually run across one before. This book changes that. The gunfire literally starts on the first page. This book’s style of action is thus: a screaming bout of gunfire erupts, and steadily grows worse from there, building in intensity to heart-stopping terror until just about that time that you think that its the end for you. And then you begin to think that maybe, just maybe, a solution has been found—that things are just about to make a change for the better—that you are saved… and then things immediately fall into the crapper and begin that inexorable slide down the proverbial—and ever so fervently to be avoided—rabbit hole. You’re just never given the opportunity to catch your breath. I read the entire book in a single sitting! Honest to goodness. I just couldn’t put it down.
The United States has just been subjected to a biological attack by a weaponized virus. This virus affects the frontal lobe of the brain, changing its chemical behavior so that those infected with it become mindless, conscienceless, murderers bent on nothing except the destruction of anyone that moves. Make a sound in the dark and the next thing you know you have a murdering mob of sociopaths after you whose sole purpose t8 exist is to end your existence. In their disease inspired hatred they will attack you with anything they can find at hand ... a gun, a knife, a garden hoe … or a glittering icepick. And if they can’t find anything more appropriate, they’ll use their teeth. They are zombies that don’t shuffle. Conscienceless, murdering sociopaths that can run as fast as you can.
The cities that have been struck by this indiscriminate virus have been declared quarantine zones in the recent past. But things have gotten so bad, the virus is so contagious and it’s resulted in such horrid violence perpetrated by those infected by it, that these quarantine zones are just about to be declared a Kill Box. A weapons free, shoot anything that moves zone, in which nothing that moves will be allowed to live. A repeat of Monchegorsk, a Russian city that was completely wiped out by the Russian government when this virus was let loose there four years ago. The world never found out about it. This book is the story of a small group of people who are desperately seeking to escape the quarantine zone before it is declared a Kill Box.
The book progresses with such rapid fire progression that you never have a chance to decide who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy, and who’s going to change sides next. By the time this book was over, I still had no firm idea who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. But I can tell you this. If you lived in this world created by Steven Konkoly, then you would possess NO uncertainty about it at all. Your government, your very own government, was out to get you. Because it’s beginning to look like it was someone high in the ranks of the United States government that initiated a biological attack on its very own citizens.
The countdown to Armageddon is ticking.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI had trouble figuring out the start of this book? I gathered something was going on in Indianapolis but what? Then I got it and it started to make sense, except then Konkloy just disregards all the bodies that people must be tripping over? Maybe if they vaporized when they were shot? It could have been better written. I mean if your crazy, seeing anyone is a target, yet he directs them all at the good guys to make the story hold. Can you imagine ten shooters and still being overrun and those overrunning you aren’t shooting, come on. I gave it 4 stars but it is more like 3.8. Addendum—Read Hot Zone first, then this is much better 5.—-
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe gang’s all here and then some. Dr. Chang, Larsen, Emma & Jack, and David & Justin are hiding within NevoTech in downtown Indianapolis trying to access Chang’s research and get it to . . . who? Who is the $64k question. Someone wants Chang captured or killed because of his research. He is one of the few in his field that has studied the virus before it was unleashed in over 20 major cities across the US. Unbeknownst to the powers that be Chang has studied this new version of the virus and determined it has been weaponized. Who can he trust to give this information to? And, can he get his group to safety at the same time?
There are zombies everywhere. That is the best way to describe those infected with the weaponized virus. They are a murderous bunch attracted by the least little sound or at night, to light sources. Getting past them and the two quarantine zones are some of the challenges Chang and his group face trying to leave NevoTech.
Konkoly’s second novel in The Zulu Virus Chronicles, KILL BOX: A Post-Apocalyptic Pandemic Thriller, takes off running and never stops. There is a sense of urgency throughout the story to get out of the quarantine zone and hopefully, to safety away from those that caused this outbreak. The odds are not looking so good in that regard.
Even amongst all the chaos and confusion, Konkoly is able to interject some moments of levity. My favorite quote is “Yeah. I’m fine. But I’m taking up cross fit when this is over,” said Jack. “I didn’t realize the apocalypse would be this demanding.” Larsen continues to use his sarcastic wit to take the edge off and to defuse serious situations. And, even David is starting to add humor to his dialog.
This book is very well written. It grabs your attention immediately which makes it hard to put down. I do not like zombie books but will make an exception in this case. I like this book. I don’t like that it is full of zombies. That is a personal preference and in no way reflects upon Konkoly’s ability to spin a tale. I would dare say that this is one of the better books that he has written.
5 out of 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReviewer's note: This is the second book in a series which basically continues where the first one left off. If you haven't read book one, Hot Zone, then I highly recommend you read it first. If you want an even deeper understanding of the background then I recommend also reading Black Flagged, books one through three, by Mr. Konkoly.
This is a mixture of Post-Apocalyptic, Medical, and Military genres.
After an "event" put a major city in a tailspin, several things were going on, most of it not good. A group of people who are fighting their way out of the city suffers a setback but maybe, in the long run, it will be a good thing if only they can catch a break.
I really enjoyed this story overall. Mr. Konkoly has a way of putting characters, who feel like real people, in situations that make them learn something deeper about themselves. Sometimes their goodness comes to the surface. Other times, people's inner demon does. In doing this, it caused me to wonder how I would react in similar circumstances. Which side would surface and who would I become?
Warning: There is Violence as well as Adult Language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Pt I, but an excellent read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving read 'Hot Zone' some time ago (apologies to the author if I forgot to leave a review - definitely 5*), I decided to pick up Pt II a few days ago after seeing some of the reviews.
I'm not sure I agree with those that say this book is better than the last, though: these reservations grew with the somewhat drawn-out description of the rescue/extraction of Dr Hale by Larsen, Olsen and the rest of the team you'll be familiar with. Then other characters would be brought into play (Major Nick Smith at the hospital, Ragan and her team), only for them to disappear a short time later as the plot changed. It did leave me wondering at times what direction the story would be taking next.
But be patient, because it all comes together fantastically: I'd been used to the more-frequent changes in Hot Zone, but the author has done a brilliant job in bringing back those key characters at just the right time, and for the right reasons. What makes this story stand out from others in the zombie genre is that it isn't simply a gore-fest: you have strong characters that are looking for answers - 'Who did this? Why? How can we stop it?' - and we get to experience the evolution of the undead from simply shambling around to something much more potent; more intelligent, aware and terrifying. This, for me, it where 'Kill Box' really stands out - the strong development of what are, essentially, secondary characters. The failed escape in Chang's plane was gripping in its simplicity of storytelling and plot development.
One thing I never fully warmed to was the increased use of humour, especially involving Larsen and Olsen; I found it a bit over-the-top, especially with all the grinning and winking, and I think the extraction of Dr Hale at the beginning could have been more concise, but neither of these points were frustrating enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
It should also be noted the editing is especially strong - I don't recall seeing a single typo or grammatical error.
Even with the slight change in writing style, Mr Konkoly has produced an excellent piece of work. Looking forward to reading part three, see how it all ends!
