King of the Court Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 4,886 ratings

We don’t get a lot of NBA superstars coming through little ol’ Pine Hill, Texas. That’s why everyone is all in a tizzy over the fact that the USA men’s Olympic basketball team will be training here of all places before this year’s Summer Games. With little else to talk about, rumors about the players have been spreading like wildfire, and there’s one man in the middle of it all holding a match.

Ben Castillo.
NBA champion.
Olympic gold medalist.
Widely hailed ‘King of the Court’.

The morning he walks into my dingy diner, I have enough sense to keep my head down and go right on wiping tables, pouring coffee, and serving up short stacks. A man who looks like that—superstar or not—has only ever meant trouble, and more trouble is the last thing I need, what with taking care of Nan and scraping by on tips from truckers.

If anything, he seems drawn to my indifference. His steely gaze pierces me behind the counter. My knees nearly buckle under the weight of his attention. But while Mr. Pretty Boy is probably used to snagging city girls with a smile, this gal is country strong.

I won’t be some clichéd convenience for him on his way through town.
So look over your choices carefully, Benny-boy. We serve up sides of hash browns here, not heartbreak.

Absolute Best Duo
🏀 K I N G • O F • T H E • C O U R T 🏀 This book is exactly what I needed. As always, R.S. Grey pulled out out of a huge reading slump ~ First and foremost, this is hands down the best duo that Grey has written yet. Both characters just trying to find their way -- be it Raelynn trying to find her way back to her dream or Ben trying to crawl out of the perpetual depressed funk he was in -- was absolutely beautiful and as human as it gets. Part of me felt as if I could relate to Raelynn (not in the whole science genius way) but her upbringing, we are one in the same. A small town, very similar to the one described in the book, being raised by grandparents because my parents both feel victim to drugs. To me, this story felt very realistic in many ways. Ben is an absolute dreamboat. I love the way he was written more cinnamon roll than brute. And that automatic connection between both characters. That connection is what I live for now. I have sooo many thoughts but this story is full of little surprises that I feel like I will give away spoilers if I say too much. But this book felt very much like home to me. Even the basketball made me feel a little nostalgic for a place that doesn't necessarily exist anymore if that makes sense. Bottom line -- this book is a MUST read. And, if you're on Kindle Unlimited, you can read it free today!

I really enjoyed this pro basketball story. Raelynn is a smart, hard working young woman, who’s hard her share of tough breaks. She is dirt poor and working as a diner waitress and maid. Ben is captain and star of the champion NBA team and is training in her tiny Texas town as part of the US Olympic team when they meet. Sometimes you meet the right person but timing and circumstances conspire against you. They come from such different worlds but each recognizes the loneliness and needs of the other. Both hearts break when They are forced apart and it’s a few years before they reconnect and get their second chance. I liked the writing and a lot of the plot. In some ways, the writing reminded me a little of Tijan, but with less angst. There’s no ow/om drama, no cheating, no mean girls trying to sabotage them. One plot point I found anticlimactic was having Raelynn deal with paparazzi and fans. There was this big build up about exposing her to the public, security concerns, privacy concerns, etc. Ben made a huge deal about it then…nothing. No incidences happened at all. She wasn’t recognized on campus, in her classes, while out and about. No leaked photos, no stalking paps. Just nothing. Why make such a big deal, then never mention it again?? Ben is a wonderful, caring man in love. Fantastic book bf! I loved that Raelynn was a smart STEM student in graduate school. Let’s have more smart FMCs! Toddler Caleb stole the show of course with his super cute antics. Lots of fun supportive characters in this book to back up the MCs and fill out the plot. Very enjoyable read. There’s tough times, sadness, grief, loneliness, but also passion, fun, teasing, hot bedroom and shower scenes, hard work, and love.

I think the narration is pretty good. The only problem in the male chapters , the voice reading the female parts ruins the narration. The story is interesting but some parts are not believable. The female is very intelligent but when an under graduate leaves school with a full scholarship, years later they do walk back in college and get it back. The male characters were likable, for the most part. The main male character written to love the main female character. When you think about him ,he is selfish and does he really love. He left with all his money and never helped this female. He knew she was in serious financial trouble. He only saw her again by accident. He married the female had several children, kept on doing what he loved for years and left the female to take care of family. He retired at the end so she could follow her dreams part time. He was getting too old to play anyway. You had a sense the female not entirely happy with her life. I kept thinking this female would have been much happier with a man where she could follow her dreams. In the story everything about the rich athlete. In LA he would not have been such a big deal.

Raelynn Birdie is barely scraping by, even with her multiple jobs. Most of her meager earnings go to the care facility where her Nan stays and she barely has enough to feed and clothe herself from what's leftover. When the Olympic men's basketball team comes to town to train for a few weeks before the games, she has nothing but disdain for their luxurious lifestyle. Star player Ben Castillo begins to show Raelynn attention but she knows that she must keep him at a distance. He is leaving in a few weeks and getting involved with a pro athlete will only shatter her heart.

OH MY HEART!!! RS Grey captured my attention with this sports romance. It was one that crept up on me...it was a slow start but then once Ben and Raelynn started to connect, I was enraptured by it. I thought this book was going to be predictable in every way, which is fine by me - I know what to expect from romances and I still love them. But this book subtlety challenged my expectations with how Raelynn and Ben's story panned out.

What's not to love about this book? A hot professional athlete who wants to take care of a woman who has always focused on taking care of others. Add in exceptional dialogue that builds a connection between them and chemistry that is OFF THE CHARTS and you get a perfect book!

This book gave me all the feels and had me hot and bothered too. This is one of my favorite RS Grey books to date!

This author has written another completely romantic & sweet book with King of the Court. I just love reading her stories because I get such wonderful romance, a lot of laughs and TONS of steam usually without the crazy out of control drama. Now, she doesn’t give her characters an easy road but it’s realistic and believable.

Raelynn and Ben were such a good couple. I LOVED that Raelynn was so smart and passionate about her education & school. The fact that she went back to Texas to take care of her grandmother was endearing and a little sad (my own grandmother had dementia so this story hit home there). Ben was a good guy…..solid, honest and humble. I loved that the stereotypes of the small town girl and NBA superstar didn’t really materialize here. Raelynn didn’t NEED Ben and Ben wasn’t a manwhore. So refreshing.

I definitely would recommend this book if you are looking for a low angst, high steam and incredibly romantic romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2024
This author always tells a good romance story and this one is great. There are plenty of pages to really get into the characters. Ben is the star NBA athlete who is attending a summer camp before going to the Olympics. He is a quiet man maybe a little fed up that he cant breathe without the journalists wanting a piece of him. He is with a team mate when they meet Birdie at a gas station and its the first time in a long time that he reacts to a woman. He meets her later in the diner she works at and we find out she works two jobs to try and keep her Gran in a care home. She is a bit of a genius and gave up University to come home. She doesnt want his attention as she has enough on her plate. Just as they start to get to know each other there is bad news from his ex and she tries to forget about him as he goes off to the Olympics thinking it wasnt meant to be. Its a really good read.
