Purchase options and add-ons
María is a Spanish teacher who works in a really peculiar language school, where bizarre things happen. Her students love her, but her colleagues not that much. When she doesn't turn up for work on Monday morning, her students worry and suspect something bad happened to her at the weekend. Where is María? Where is "la profe"? What happened to her? Why is she missing?
La profe de español is a short story specially written for students with a pre–intermediate level of Spanish (A2).
Learn Spanish by Reading Reading short stories like La profe de español is one of the most effective and pleasant ways to learn a Foreign Language. By reading, you can learn vocabulary and grammar structures in context, without memorising lists of isolated words or studying endless grammar rules.
However, La profe de español is not just a book to learn Spanish. It is also a good story. It is a funny, witty, enjoyable and engaging story. A story that will capture your attention from the beginning and, hopefully, will make you smile.
If you have ever been to a Spanish class, you will enjoy reading La profe de español.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2025Great book for A2 level readers!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022It's a really fun and quick read, the best graded reader I've read so far in terms of storytelling. I also appreciated this being one longer story instead of a collection of short stories, and that the language feels natural and what we may encounter in real life. The story itself is well put together and has a good flow. It quickly starts pointing at the solution to the mystery but keeps you interested all the way through by not being overly obvious, which compels you to keep reading and learn more of the details.
While I've liked the interactions between students, teachers' dialogues could've been better. They do a good job building up the atmosphere and showing you really what kind of place the school is, but they've lacked going a bit deeper into teachers' personalities. I would also appreciate learning more about Eduardo (one of the staff at school) which seemed to be most interesting of the bunch, in a way, but his background was never explored. None of it really took a lot from the reading experience but let's just say that was enough for me to give 4 and not 5 stars.
Beyond that, the book could have used an audiobook. I think I'm not alone in feeling that one of the best ways to learn a new language is through both reading and listening simultaneously. Unfortunately none of Juan's books have audiobook companions and I hope he'll consider making them in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2024This book is a gem for adult Spanish learners who don't want to read books meant for schoolchildren. Juan Fernandez uses dry and subtle wit and read-between-the-lines dialogue to mock and eviscerate educational practices that support antiquated materials, unqualified teachers, and penny-pinching administrators at the expense of creative, engaging and effective educators. Not for children, and not for readers who need everything spelled out for them. If at the end of the book you don't know what happened to Maria and Julio, you weren't paying attention. :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025Actually enjoyed the book! My y more interesting then other books intended to learn Spanish. This one actually engaging and really liked the fact that Spanish from Spain is used with all it’s slangs.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2024Really enjoyed this one. Funny observations. Funny characters. Interesting story. Yeah, the ending was a little abrupt but hey, so what? Artistic choice. Definitely helpful for my learning because I actually looked forward to reading it and will do so again a few more times. Muchas gracias!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2018There's not much of a story and what there is isn't resolved quite enough. Nothing "bizarre" happens--it's basically a day in the life at a Spanish language school. But it's still pretty interesting (even though there's a scene where they are sitting around discussing grammar in a classroom!) and it includes helpful conversational phrases. It's clearly written and the comprehension questions are clear and simple. These are the only graded readers I've come across that are written by a native speaker, so that's nice. And his website (1001 Reasons to Learn Spanish) seems like it will be helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2024I enjoy this book, and others in the series. I usually read the B1 level books, but I like little mysteries and so chose this one. The author draws interesting characters, and the use of Spanish builds on the vocabulary from one chapter to another. Although I found the ending sort of ... nothing ... I did like to read about the people and situation.
One note about very sloppy editing: Manolo is introduced early in the book; his name changes to Manuel with no explanation, then back to Manolo (in fact, Manolo is casual use for Manuel). In fact, in the same chapter! It can be confusing if you are wondering "who is this Manuel guy?"
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2023Interesting story. Enjoyed reading this book. When I finished I wanted to learn more about Maria the teacher and the students. I wanted to know what happened to Maria
Helpful vocabulary and phrases for each chapter. Also helpful questions at the end of each chapter to see if the reader understood what was happening
Recommend for intermediate learning and to enhance your learning Spanish!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, just wow
How can one write such a small story, yet gripping, yet with simple words to help the beginners? This can easily be called a page-turner because of the way it was narrated. I could relate to this story (and many more beginners in Spanish too) because I too felt I was one of the students of Maria's class. It also introduces a plethora of words, phrases, vocabularies, vernacular that is used in everyday language which is hard to find in a dictionary or a different book that claims to learn Spanish by Reading. I also highly recommend the extra material in Juan's website that takes you to a small tour of the culture of Spain and the Spaniards. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am so crazy that I am buying all his books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and easy reading
It is a very useful book for new learners of Spanish. I like that some key words and expressions are bold with a translation in English at the end of every chapter. I already bought another book from the same writer.
