4.3 out of 5 stars 221 ratings

Heart surgeon Dr Bree Parker has never had a care in the world until Gaston Roget sets his sights on her. Looking for a safe haven from her stalker, she finds herself hiding out in the morgue where she finds a sympathetic shoulder to cry on in Dr Morgan Jennings.
They became fast friends and the line between friendship and the opportunity for something more is often blurred, and always ignored. That is until Bree announces she’s pregnant, and getting married. Devastated, Morgan finally acknowledges her feelings for her friend. Unable to stand by and watch her marry Tony, she sends Bree a letter explaining that she’s leaving town, but if Bree feels the same way, then she should stop her from leaving.
Bree doesn’t turn up.
Morgan finds herself on the shore of the lake, looking out onto the mountains. In the arms of Maggie, she has the chance to love again, but leaving Bree is more difficult than she thought. Especially when circumstance keeps bringing her home to LA.
Back to Bree.
Will there be a chance for them to reconcile? Or will Morgan return to the mountains?

Claire Highton-Stevenson is a British Indie author. She writes heartwarming, Sapphic romance in contemporary settings. Claire's characters are bold, strong, independent women who love women.

However, she is also known to throw in a mystery or two. Claire likes to move around the tropes at will, and will often bend the rules to create exciting and often unique situations. She's not afraid to tackle darker topics either.

I really enjoyed this story! It kept me intrigued. It was heartwarming but also sexy. The only thing I would have changed is there was almost nothing about the physical side of their relationship. I didn't want graphic details ( subtlety is better) but it was almost totally skipped over. But otherwise, I really loved this book and very much look forward to reading more of this authors work!

I really enjoyed this read up until the last 25%. I agree with some other reviews that the ending felt rushed. The author did such a good job of creating angst out of miscommunication but then when the real story starts of the two MCs finding each other it was just wham bam thank you ma'am. I would have liked it to match the rest of the book in that aspect. It would have been nice to see more development of the relationships between the new Bree and new Morgan (now that I think of it that may be the biggest flaw of the book). It would have also been nice if the Tony played a bigger role and even that Roget dude.
Anyway, despite all that, I enjoyed the read. It had a good amount of angst for me and a decent, though rushed, HEA. Plus free on kU. Fans her books will enjoy it. 3.5*

When the book opened up with the prologue, it captured my attention fully. But as I started reading, this book by this author didn’t seem as if it belonged to her. The characters seemed quite juvenile and not in keeping with their age and profession of both being MD’s. They read as if they were in their early 20’s.

I understand that Bree was afraid that her stalker would wreak havoc on all those that she loved or cared about. But how she pushed her BFF Morgan to the side to date Tony was just plain weird and doesn’t ring true for too very close friends. Then Bree continues on to get pregnant and then marry said guy. She is an intelligent cardiologist that should not have been in this situation in the first place. The pregnancy and then eventually the child should not have happened. No rational MD would make these types of decisions.

Her BFF who she ditches in a sense writes her a letter asking her to not let her leave as she leaves on a plane. This does not happen and she takes a LOA from her job for a year to get away. I know that being hurt is one thing when you feel as if you’ve found the one and then to learn that your friend knew how you felt all along because she felt the same, but still married and continued with a pregnancy is just inane. She meets someone and gets involved in one of the silliest ways.

Their family conspires to get them back together. And all the other things that happens in between is rather pedestrian. These are very underdeveloped and flat characters. I didn’t feel any chemistry between them and could not be invested in them having a HEA. I was actually hoping for the opposite. There was nothing to truly bring these two together. All of this could have been avoided and solved with a simple conversation. You don’t go from spending time together and squeezing together on a sofa watching movies to dating some guy at random, getting pregnant to some dude in the military that deploys and is never around to pushing your best friend away. It felt very middle school-ish.

Of course they came together in the end. You were then hit with them being together physically which was even more underwhelming and you’re left wondering why in the last few pages. There was no chemistry between them. I just breezed through their one scene of intimacy and it was lacking and did nothing for this reader. I felt cheap after skimming it. And trust me, I love eroticism of all types. But this…well, it didn’t really have a place here.

This book was time wasted. Pity. Because I like this author. I loved “It’s a Date” and “The Consciousness.”

This book kept me turning the pages. Claire Highton Stevenson weaves a story of journey to find the strength for true joy in love. Fear drives Bree to choices that were not about her heart. Morgan wants nothing but to follow her heart. Bree's choices shatter Morgans heart. Leaving Bree was her only choice. Can they navigate the emotioms it takes for them to come back to each other and love deeply. I love this story.

What a great book. I love the characters that the author created and presented to the readers. I only wish that the stocker died in jail… Or we found out he did die in jail. What happened to that too? I love the interfering mom’s trying to get the girls together… So cute.

This could have been a great story, the bones were there but the substance was missing. I’ve enjoyed everything else I’ve read by this author, but this was disappointingly superficial.
