Discover "the secret" in this haunting gay romance.

Fresh from university, Stephen Davis has returned to the family farm to inherit a responsibility that was never meant to be his. Feeling bored and trapped, the pretentious farm boy starts hanging out with Shaun Munro, an unpopular try-hard from the town's most dysfunctional family. What starts as an unlikely friendship slowly evolves into a passionate romance that takes Stephen completely by surprise. Sadly, their summer of love comes to a tragic end and Stephen's life is changed forever.

Twenty years later, Inver Murray has come home to Clifton to bury the father he barely knew. Despite his reluctance to be back in town, he does enjoy the chance to stay and reconnect with Stephen, his childhood neighbour. However, interactions with Stephen soon turn awkward, and strange happenings in the night begin to rattle Inver who is unaware that his handsome host intends to make him pay for the sins of his dead father.

Set along the wild coast of New Zealand, Let Me Catch You is a haunting love story that brings two broken souls together as they unearth the truth about what happened all those years ago when Shaun Munro learned "the secret."

New Zealand author Kent Deron Kent lives in New Zealand under the shadow of a mountain where it rains... a lot. He enjoys music, sharing ghost stories, road trips and talking a wide range of effluent over coffee with friends and family. This is his debut novel.

Kent opens his book in 1996 (the journey will transpire over 20 years) and his language and written painting immediately draws u s into the novel – ‘The night rode in on the back of a storm. It brought with it a howling gale saddled with thick grey clouds carrying angry rain that lashed the tiny town of Clifton below. The sea churned with driftwood, shifting heavy boulders along its ocean floor like marbles. But that wasn’t all the waters were dumping on the coast this rough night. A sliver of silver moonlight falls on a corpse waiting to be delivered to the shore, its soul having departed its earthly enclosure two days prior. This rugged New Zealand coast is well acquainted with death having visited its shores on numerous occasions. Since rival tribal wars where victors feasted on the flesh of their enemies, crew trapped in wrecked ships or fun seekers sucked out to sea by rips, grief has been part of the landscape. Some say the land is tapu. A sacred place that should not be ventured, not even approached. All who violate this open themselves up to a form of spiritual justice that can bring about great misfortune, sometimes death. Dotted along its bluffs sit large pohutukawa trees, some hundreds of years old, the last remaining witnesses to some of these tragedies. Their limbs claw out above the sheer drop they sit atop with their tiny leaves hanging on for dear life. In summer, this Kiwi Christmas tree blossoms the most brilliant bright red, much like the colour of blood spilled through the years on the black sand below. The strip of land where the town sits, hugs shallow fields gifting it a beach used as a playground by residents and holiday makers with short memories of the dangers that lurk on this shore. A short walk from the swimming beach high cliffs frame the coast where the unsuspecting can be caught in fast raging tides. Their bodies slammed against the cliffs, flesh ripped away by sharp rocks of the reef, eaten by sea creatures eventually caught by fishermen who take the catch home to feed hungry mouths. Now another has been added to the tidal tally. The broken boy floating three hundred metres from land will be coughed up in the morning. His ragged corpse will lay face up, feet pointing to the sky as a crowd of onlookers inspect the grisly scene of death. His body now an empty shell will be a reminder to one young man of his guilt and involvement in this dark fairy tale. The beach will carry the stench of death, a cruel sweetness like a rank perfume. This time, the sea will return this son of Clifton, but she won’t be so quick to give out the boy’s secrets. Shaun Munro will now be laid to the earth and connected to the land. He will be part of Clifton. Something the town folk have never granted the Munro family.’ And yes, the prose sings in this manner throughout this fine novel.

The story is hinted in the synopsis and to tell more might break the spell – ‘Some paths in life lead us to take a leap of faith. Self-conscious, Inver Murray has come home to Clifton to bury the father he barely knew. Staying with his father’s former boss, Stephen Davis, provides a distraction from his mess of a life, and a face that continues to haunt him. Soon though, awkward interactions with Stephen, and strange happenings in the night, begin to rattle Inver who is unaware his handsome host intends to make him pay for the sins of his father. It’s 1995 and cocky womanizer Stephen has returned to the family farm to inherit a responsibility that was never meant to be his. Feeling bored and trapped he develops an unlikely friendship with social outcast Shaun Munro. As lines between mates are crossed, Stephen begins to question what he stands for. The true spirit of their friendship betrays those around them, leading to severe consequences in a town rife with secrets, and forces Stephen to choose which path in life to take.

The story is a gay romance/drama set in New Zealand. It follows two story lines in a mesmerizing fashion. Excellent novel that deserves a wide audience. Grady Harp, May 17

I would give this 4 1/2 stars if I could. This book grew on me as I read it. And in the end, I was really glad I read it. The setting is in rural New Zealand, the coast, wealthy ranch kids and sweet kids in poverty with reputations they don't deserve and parents they didn't choose. Menzy shifts between high school years and adult middle-age years as we learn about the history of Stephen Davis and his high school buddies and their high school immaturities. But one unassuming young man who, because of his social class, never really fits in turns out to be more mature than you suspect and someone you would really want as a friend. This is one of those books that weaves threads of several narratives that converge at the end in a skillful piece of storytelling that doesn't follow the standard gay romance formula of so many other novels. I recommend this book. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that it got a little sappy at the very very end, but even though I am a secular man, the sappy stuff was not overdone and it is still a beautifully told tale.

Very interesting story. The second chapter threw me because of what was in the first chapter. Pay attention to the dates in the chapter headings. It may look like point of view, but the date helps make sense. I always wonder how much of what an author writes comes from their own life experience. I could see this story coming from a real life experience. It would be great if we all had a Shaun to pick us up in life and near death experiences. Enjoyable read.

Wow…what an emotional roller coaster!! Zane did an absolute AMAZING job of weaving the past with the present to tell this heartbreaking story of discovery, young love, loss, and ultimately forgiveness. Sometimes the hardest forgiveness to grant is when we must forgive ourselves. Definitely want to read more by this author!!

From the very beginning of the book you know that Shaun is killed and I don't think that was necessary. This still would have been an interesting story if it stayed in one time period and moved forward chronologically, instead of bouncing back and forth. Written as is, I was waiting for Shaun to die and wondering how it was going to happen until it did.

I enjoyed the geographic setting, and the placement of Shaun's family as outsiders in a small town was clearly felt. A sad story and just bizarre reasons for Luke's actions twenty years apart, and Stephen's initial intent toward Inver.

Unusual plot, compared with most stories in this genre. I would say the book is 95% good. However, there seems to be an imbalance of emphasis on the past versus “present“ circumstances. Nevertheless, this book is enjoyable to read. Lots of emotional highs and lows.

First I should say that I read this story pretty much straight for two days. It is longer than a typical gay romance, but that is not a bad thing in this case. It is written by an author I'd not heard of before, but will definitely look for in the future. There were actually two story lines (one past and one present), but the writer made it easy to differentiate between the two. I found that once I started to get into the characters, it was difficult to put down. I loved the chemistry between Stephen and Shaun in the earlier story line, even if it took a while for the interest to develop. And even though it was different with Stephen and Inver in the later scenes (sometimes confusing at times), it was heartfelt and emotional.
The language was colorful and the dialogue was rich in Kiwi-speak, which was amusing to get caught up in... altogether, I rather enjoyed the debut from this author and look forward to his subsequent work.

I hated that the story had to come to an end. So well written: credible characters , circumstances, and outcomes …and I had the most peaceful feeling when I finished, almost like I knew the Secret. Thank you great job Zane Mendy ❤️👊🏻🙏🏻

5.0 out of 5 stars ....two S’s, hugging forever.....

This wrecked me. Finished it in the small hours then had to wake my grumpy other half for a much needed hug ‘cause I couldn’t stop blubbering. It’s a beautifully poignant and bittersweet to its bones read that’s heady with the joy of first love and all the gut-wrenching sorrow of its early demise. I sorta wanna hate it for being so unbearably sad and frustratingly unfair, but unfortunately it happens to be one of the best things I’ve read in the genre, and also my new fave by this master storyteller.

The story spans two decades, and while I’m not always keen on flipping between past and present, here it’s enlightening and integral to the plot, and in understanding the complexities of main protagonist, Stephen, and his self-imposed hermitage and reasons for seducing woebegone one-time neighbour, Inver. The flashbacks to a twenty-one year old Stephen reveal a blossoming friendship and later romance between he and local kid Shaun that, through denial and vengefulness, result in tragedy, permeating the next twenty years of our lead’s life with guilt and regret.

While the narrative is peppered with melancholy, it doesn’t monopolise it. There’s a wealth of warmth, hope and love along with some amusing scenes that’ll almost certainly involve the precocious, potty-mouthed Josie. But Shaun absolutely takes centre stage. He’s an enlightened soul with a huge capacity for love and compassion, and also the person responsible for nurturing Stephen’s good side before ultimately gifting him a second shot at happiness.

So, regardless of the wistful, shoulda woulda coulda overtones of the book, it does end on a very promising note and with a spiritually uplifting and otherworldly epilogue that again, triggered the old tear ducts…but in a really good way. ❤️ this one.

This book is one of the best I've read this year.
Right from the start you already know what'll happen to one of the main characters and It is Impossible not to love him. Every New chapter It builds up and when the thing you were expecting happens it feels so real. I cried so much towards the end a mix of sadness and Joy. I'll definetely come back to this book a few more times.

This is the first book I have read by this author and oh boy did he pull at my heart strings. This book covers POV from two different years 1996 and 2016. The two main characters Stephen and Shaun are just wonderful and I loved them both. I just knew something bad was going to happen so when I was about 80% into the book the tears started even before I knew what the bad thing was. By the time I was at 90% I was blubbering like a baby it just broke my heart. I was however happy ish with the ending. Thank you Zane for making me cry like a baby, your writing skills worked wonders and I haven’t cried like this reading a book for ages. Looking forward to reading more of his books 🥰

I don't normally write reviews, I read story after story, some are good and some are bad. This is a good story but what I loved was the very end which got me all emotional, because it is close to what I believe in and I just wish everyone could read this and just be good and love and not contain hate.
