A Spark of Something (A Librarian's Guide to Witchery Book 1) Kindle Edition
Hello there, I don’t think I’ve seen you here before. Well, if you are new, welcome. I’m Oliver ‘Ollie’ Cross, owner of the Cross Heritage Private Library, and I have a problem. Several actually. To explain the full weight of my conundrum, I feel I have to put out there that I am skeptical of all paranormal ‘things’, and always have been. Mostly, I just find the supernatural a bunch of nonsense. At least…I did…until ghosts started appearing…and my cat started talking to me… And if that weren't enough, there is a book that constantly insults me, while claiming that I'm a witch!
So, as you can see, I have quite a conundrum on my hands, in that I…may be losing my ever-loving mind.
On a positive note, for the first time in my life, a man may actually like my tendency to babble, so…winning there? But then, Noble Vincent is perfect… Mysterious, but perfect. Though my cat doesn’t like him, and my best friend thinks he is hiding something. But if anything that's happening is reality…my cat also lied to me my whole life…and my best friend usually thinks everyone is hiding something, so…opinions rejected!
Anyhoo, things are fine! I’m fine! What’s a few life altering events, some breakdowns, and…multiple people trying to kill me—hah… Things will be okay! I hope…

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2025Where to begin? This was such an amazing romance/ action / realistic fiction with magic, book. The first chapter has LOT of descriptions of the library and Ollies space. I almost stopped because of it, but I’m so glad I didn’t.
Ollie is such a sweetheart and I LOVE the ADHD/ autism representation. In general the whole cast was so diverse and well written. There are so many fun twists in this book about magic and characters. Some of the twists you can see coming but others just come out of nowhere in the most spectacular way! Also, Red is the best family for Ollie, he’s just great and I love him.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025I stuck it out but I almost stopped reading this. The beginning just wasn’t all that interesting. I couldn’t have cared less about the unnecessarily long description of the library. This could have been condensed down into a couple paragraphs and it would have been better. Once Ollie and Noble started interacting more it got much better though. The ending was good and left enough to be intrigued about for the next book
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025I was highly anticipating this series, and I was absolutely justified.
Ollie was absolutely adorable, and I initially disliked Noble, but his character grew on me.
Red was amazing and I want mire of him.
The supernatural mystery had me hooked and I can't wait for more from this world.

I LOVE OLLIE SO MUCH, I NEED A HUG FROM HIM!! He is adorable incarnate! The side characters are phenomenally awesome! Noble and Ollie, I honestly couldn't get enough of! I loved the dialogue between these characters, which are so witty and original. Just a great read!

I really liked Noble and Red, they were strong and sure. It just seemed that the author tried to make Ollie too innocent and instead made him a weakling. The entire book felt like Ollie just stuffed his fingers in his ears and went Nah Nah Nah Nah trying to ignore every obvious thing that was happening. It got really annoying. And he cried a lot.
Noble is going through a redeeming arc - partially. I approved of the choices he made, to keep being a monster but only to keep Ollie safe.
Red is awesome and I can’t wait to see exactly what a familiar can do once he’s all charged up.
The grimoire was a jerk, it’s obviously a mystery for a future book, but I just wanted to light it on fire.
The book as a whole was more boring than the others I’ve read by this author. So much time was spent describing the library, its security measures, the staff, the daily routines, it got confusing and annoying. So much time was spent showing us how perfect and nice Ollie was, have you heard the term “Mary Sue”? Because that’s what Ollie was turned into.
I’m sure I’ll read the second book just to see if it gets any better and I do like the author's other books so I have a bit of hope. But maybe hold off reading this one until the reviews for book two come in.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025It took me a little while to get into this book as the start was pretty slow. I’d say the first 50% of the book was hard to get into, but it picked up a lot after that and was a lot more engaging. However there are certain writing choices that made the story feel clunky.
One issue is there are a LOT of POV changes. I’m talking multiple changes per chapter and some POVs last only a few paragraphs. I think there were far better ways to show the emotions of multiple characters without the constant shifting of point of views. It ended up being really distracting and made the story feel disjointed.
The other issue is hard to discuss without being too spoiler-y, but I’ll just say that a lot of reviewers describe Noble as morally grey but there’s literally nothing grey about what he’s done. I loved how he treated Ollie but I struggled to get invested in the book because of his backstory. I couldn’t see how I was supposed to ever get invested in such a character…
Overall I really wanted to love this book and I did like Ollie a lot, but there were so many odd writing choices that made it difficult to get invested. Again the second half helped redeem the book a lot as the story began to flow better, so I do still recommend giving the book a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025I loved A Spark of Something by Shelby Rhodes. It's the first book in the A Librarian's Guide to Witchery. I loved Ollie and Noble's story. I love Ollie's personality and how he talks to his cat, Red, before he knows that he is a witch and Red is his familiar. I also love how he tries to help the ghosts and how Noble is there to save him when things go bad. I also love how Ollie would babble when he was nervous and how talkative he is in the bedroom. I also love the gods that he is able to channel so far. It will be interesting to see if he gets more than the three he currently has or if he will be special and have more. I also can't wait to see how he reacts when he finds out that Noble is now an ex-witch hunter and that his familiar knew the whole time. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
I read this book using the Kindle unlimited app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ollie & Noble
Ollie & Noble
Ollie is a librarian, he inherited a private library, he starts seeing ghosts, eventually it’s revealed that he is a Witch. Noble is a Witch Hunter that’s had enough of killing for an organisation that says witches are evil. He’s realised he has morals that show what he’s been doing isn’t right. Noble has been visiting the library mainly because he’s attracted to Ollie, Ollie’s been kind of stalking Noble. They grow closer and fall in love.
I love this story. I look forward to the next book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curious
The book started quite well, but I became annoyed with the writing style. Especially with the frequent times Ollie would be called 'the man' instead of his name. The plot seems a bit garbled too. I don't think I'll be waiting for part 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spark of Something alright
Oh, this first book is the beginning of what promises to be a story of scary & emotional times for our witch Ollie. My heart is hurting for him as he discovers his witchy side and all the lies and deception that have been told to him to supposedly keep him safe.
Noble is the love interest that will keep him safe, but may ultimately break his heart.
