- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2012The Grimoire: Lichgates is the first book in The Grimoire Trilogy. In this first book the author, S.M. Boyce, throws Kara (the main character) and the reader into an entirely new work called Ourea. To get to this world, Lichgates are necessary. They are portals linking our world to the dangerous, yet beautiful, kingdoms of Ourea. They are scattered all over both worlds and it is through one of them in the Rocky Mountains that Kara stumbles.
Upon falling into an underground library, Kara finds waiting for her an old red leather book. The book is very magical. On it is a necklace with a pendant that looks like four crescent moons configured in the shape of a four-leaf clover. This book is so magical that there are blank pages throughout, but when asked the right questions the pages flip to sections and words appear with an answer.
This book is one of Kara's only defenses against what lies in wait for her in Ourea. Upon opening the book, she has become the center of every kingdom's focus; she is the Vagabond. Her purpose in this strange world is to reunite the four kingdoms in peace, fulfilling the goal of the first Vagabond who died a thousand years before.
This concept really caught me from the beginning. Like I said I was hooked from reading the first chapter alone. It takes a lot to do that with most books. Part of what kept me reading was the fact that this book doesn't wait to get the reader into the action. There is no lead in chapters, no foreshadowing, no mercy. Kara is hiking one minute and in Ourea fighting for her life the next. Every time throughout the book it seems that there will be some time to relax (for the characters and readers alike) something happens. It's almost impossible to put this book down. Lucky for me I was able to force the book down, which allowed me to savor every experience it held; there are many.
I loved many elements of this book. First off, the setting made me want to visit Ourea. I know this is impossible (not only because it's not a real place) because if I went there, I'd most likely die (more on that soon.) Ourea is like the worlds of most fantastical stories. It has its beautiful landscapes, luxurious castles, and even a dreary kingdom no one wants to acknowledge. Its landscapes include forests, a kingdom nestled on top of a vertigo inducing multi mile high cliff, and even a kingdom found in a magical dome on the bottom of an ocean guarded by sharks. And it's not just the places themselves that I fell in love with, it's the way Boyce's words describe them. I can't do it justice in my own words, you'll have to take my word for it or read the book. Her words paint a picture of every aspect allowing the reader to soak in the images.
The setting wasn't the only exciting part of the book. There are also the various creatures of the land. To mention a few there are griffins, dragons, something Kara says is similar to a squirrel, and one of my favorites a flaer named Rowthe. I liked him a lot because he's a huge dog like creature. Of course he has a unique ability, but I'm going to let you find that one out, it's just really cool.
The characters Kara encounters are very hard to figure out. This helps the story be what it is more than anything else. The Grimoire from the beginning warns Kara that she can't trust anyone in Ourea. A lot of the times it seems like the characters can be figured out and trusted, but then there's either a subtle or drastic hint to the contrary. As a reader I was always jumping to conclusions about a character only to change my opinion soon after. I'm still waiting for a character to make a turn for the worse, but we'll see if that happens.
Kara's journey takes the reader all over Ourea and she meets a variety of good and evil. She even has encounters with the evil King, Blood Carden. He is the father of Kara's companion Braeden. I guess I should have mentioned him by now. Carden is the ruler of the Stele, the banished kingdom who reeks havoc on Ourea even through a banishment. Braeden, his son, escaped from his father's kingdom twelve years earlier and has been hiding elsewhere ever since. But the ever present question in my mind was whether or not he was one to be trusted. When would the evil in his blood consume him, if at all? For most of the book I kept liking and trusting him, but wanted to keep an eye on him for Kara's sake (not that I could have helped here, that's just silly she's in a book.) There is also a growing connection between Kara and the mysterious Braeden which leads to some complications in the relationship of him as protector and one of her few friends.
To wrap this up, The Grimoire: Lichgates is on my top five favorite books I have read this year and possibly in recent years. I keep reading great books so this list should be extended to at least ten. I loved the story, I loved the setting, I loved everything about this book. The only problem that I had with it is that I didn't have the next book to read. I only hope that the day comes when I can read book two, then book three, sooner than it will.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2013Blinded by the pain of grief Kara falls into a new world, when she opened the Grimoire and became it's master. Now she is in the middle of a conflict that rages on between the races that dwell within Ourea, the world to which she is simply a pawn and a tool to wield. Now Kara must decipher who her true allies are among faces that seem like friends. Guided by her Grimoire and the memories of the past keeper, she embarks on a dangerous journey that has her running for her life and fighting for a world that she never knew existed. She stumbles upon Braeden Drakonin, a man living a lie and running from a fate that he does not want. With his own agenda and ends in mind Braeden vows to guide and protect Kara in the big new world of Ourea, but the secrets she uncovers may be to big for her to survive.
When you first open Lichgates you find Kara deep in the throes of grief, guilt and pain over the recent loss of her mother. But soon her world is turned upside down and everything that she has ever believed is put to the test. It doesn't take long for everything to change in this book; one minute you are battling grief and the next you are falling into a whole other world. Now you are lost, confused and scared out of your ever loving mind! Especially once you lay eyes on the creatures that walk the mysterious land.
But Kara just isn't any girl, or woman, she is a strong willed woman who is determined to do the right thing, no matter what the cost. She is fierce, a fighter and has a quick tongue. In Lichgates we follow her journey as she struggles to discover what her place is in Ourea, who she can trust and how to use the magic that she has been blessed with.
She has no real "road map" to the mysterious world of Ourea except the Grimoire that can answer any question, if it is the right question. Which I have to say is a pretty cool book. Frankly I would love to have one. Could you imagine school work? Seriously, S.M. Boyce had a great idea with that one. Now I know she wasn't the first one to do it, but S.M. Boyce did it with flare! In Lichgates the Grimoire became so much more than a book, it became a companion. Albeit sometimes a stubborn companion, but a companion nonetheless and one that she could always count on.
But Kara does not have to survive by Grimoire alone, oh no, because she is joined by one hot, dangerous warrior named Braeden. And boy is the guy one hot body of secrets! His story is dark, dangerous and a bit saddening. He lives a life full of lies and can never truly be himself, not without the fear of death. His plight can't help but tug at your heartstrings. I have to say I am pretty jealous of Kara getting to have this handsome guide with her on her journey. Braeden is a wealth of knowledge and power and vows to protect Kara as long as she is in Ourea, which as he discovers proves to be harder than he ever imagined.
In Lichgates author S.M. Boyce gives us a creative world as deep as the ocean with boundless possibilities. In the world that is Ourea we are greeted with vast creatures, some we know and many that we don't. And S.M. Boyce does a spectacular job of breathing new life into things we thought we knew. With the creatures of Ourea you never know who is friend or foe. This is definitely one world where you can't judge a person....or a creature by their appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing story
Refreshing story, simple in the beginning and then getting more complex and interesting. Despite a very conventional start, the author create her own style and world. The various race and cultures make the world entertaining and give a lot of matter for the future plots. The villains also have their own motives which make them more real. I will gladly read it the next books :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic adventure into another world
When Kara goes for a hike in the Rockies, seeking to escape a world of emotional problems, she hardly expects to escape to a different world altogether. After finding a magical book called the Grimoire, Kara learns she has been chosen as the next Vagabond, a mage with the goal of bringing peace to Ourea. However, the Grimoire is a long-sought after artifact, and everyone wants to be able to "control" the Vagabond. Kara's only confidant is Braedan, a man with a dark past and a cruel father who would love nothing more than to see the world suffer.
The opening of this book gripped me and also managed to incorporate a significant amount of backstory without seeming like infodump. Kara, drowning in guilt after her mother's death, is thrust with responsibility she doesn't want but cannot avoid. She is forced to navigate a world which will not accept her, both as Vagabond and as a human. Braeden is also interesting, with his struggles against his inner nature and his desire to protect Kara.
Ourea is a shadowy world in which nobody trusts anybody and whose inhabitants have never tasted true freedom. We get a taste of each of the four kingdoms which correspond to Earth, Water, Sky, and Darkness (my labels), enough for Kara's journey but not enough to truly satisfy my desire to know more about them. I hope to delve deeper into Ourea in the next instalment, as we only got a surface view of the world.
I have the next book in the series and can't wait to get into it.
4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Fantasy Novel
I have to be frank, I thought this book was amazing. It isn't often that you read a book where an author creates a whole new fantasy world where you feel like you're actually there. Boyce doesn't spare the indulgent descriptions and it is difficult to not get absorbed by this book. Every sense is engaged through words from the sweet floral scents to sour sweat. Due to the depth of this description it isn't the sort of book I would recommend reading for short periods here and there, or while you're being distracted, because you will miss out on the magic of this writing. I found it best to finish at a chapter as they are well spaced and a naturally good stopping point.
The characters are wonderful. None seem like a cliché, each seems to have been thought about and constructed as an individual rather than cast to fit a role. From my point of view, Kara is quite different from other heroines. She isn't overly smart (which tends to be the go-to for physically weaker female characters), and though she is brave, she isn't fearless. She throws herself into the world of Ourea because the ties which held her to the world as we know it are severed. Despite this, she retains her individuality and doesn't seek to conform with `allies' or bow to the royalty of other races or even her predecessor.
This is an amazing fantasy novel in which nothing is rushed. The beauty of Ourea is potent, but its dangers are numerous. Our heroine has no metaphorical `rock', her magic book is seen by others as a powerful tool, her companion is ultimately under the control of his father and the muses are equally restricted by their council. There's magic, drama, romance, evil, action and adventure. These ingredients help make up this spectacular fantasy novel. There's no doubt that I will be seeing this series through to the end!

Oh my, what is Kata going to do? I am so worried for her and Breaden. I have a feeling she will abolish the whole blood system, can’t wait to see where this story goes! Thank you!
