Magic Portal (Legends of Llenwald Book 1) Kindle Edition
Avalon's tragic past holds a magical mystery…one that could transport her to another world.
Avalon’s life seems over before it has even begun. At 18 years old, her parents are dead and she’s dropped out of school. She lives in her car, hoping to earn enough money at her carnival job to get off the streets.
But then her lonely existence unravels. A bedraggled beggar begins stalking her every move. A childhood illness flairs up after being dormant for years. And a lifelike fairy statue shows up inside the Hall of Mirrors, unlocking strange abilities that Avalon struggles to control.
As Avalon gets pulled toward a secret world where others covet her legendary powers, she must decide whom to trust—an amnesiac knight, a shapeshifting trickster, or even her former doctor—all of whom may only be exploiting her for their own gain.
Get lost in this YA portal fantasy adventure, perfect for readers of all ages who still believe magic exists somewhere at the edges of our mundane lives.

About the author

DM Fike wanted desperately to become a superhero growing up. Barring that, she would have enjoyed riding a unicorn or at least meeting a fairy. Since none of that happened, she decided to write books about everyday people discovering magic through a series of epic adventures. She’s currently living out her own happily-ever-after with her husband and two wonderful children in Oregon.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWOW! Ms. Fike has done it again. She enchanted me with her Magic of Nasci series, but I had delayed beginning the Legends of Llenwald for some reason. Definitely a tactical error, because the heroine of this series (Avalon) is just as captivating as was Ina. This book was so engrossing I set aside my habit of slow, deliberate, disciplined reading and lay awake until 2 A.M. to finish it. Where do I start? Poor, homeless, possibly terminally ill girl wakes a statue, meets a gremlin and his pet, discovers she can wield magic, is chased by Cruella DeVille on steroids, gets transported to a parallel universe, is captured, escapes, meets locals, is held against her will, escapes again, and .... Well, you'll just have to read the book. You'll also meet a fairy in shining armor and more baddies that you can shake a wand at. Ms. Fike's ability to create entirely believable worlds, true-to-life characters, gut-wrenching tension, and sparkling dialog marks her as one of the really excellent writers of the modern era. These aren't only for YA readers. Trust me.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021Format: PaperbackAfter the loss of her parents, Avalon Benton is homeless, living in her car at the age of 18. When a beggar starts to follow her, Avalon becomes nervous, and decides to sleep in a closet at the amusement park where she works. There, she finds a surprisingly lifelike statue of a fairy, which comes to life after an incident where Avalon discovers that she herself has powers. On her quest for answers, she teams up with Kay the fairy and the beggar, who turns out to be a gremlin named Nobody, and his companion Vimp. But can she truly trust any of them?
This was an amazing first book in what will become a trilogy! The plot was very well written, with twists I was not expecting. The banter was hilarious, and the characters were relatable and fun to read about. I hope to read book 2, and I definitely recommend this book!
I received a free copy of this book from the author via booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021Format: KindleMy main criticism is that Avalon, the main character is an 18 year-old girl in drastic financial need. She finds a male fairy figure crouched in front of her assigned attraction in the amusement park where she works. Because she is homeless, she sleeps there. She begins to talk to the fairy, and meets a strange character with amazing powers who apparently wants to catch her. The ensuing events follow as fantasy, with Avalon being pretty passive as she follows the fairy and the other characters as they travel to Llenwald. I did finish the audiobook, but was left unsatisfied.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021Format: KindleI love this book.
Can't wait for more.
I will be leaving a review on Goodreads & Amazon.
And letting everyone know about it.
So I give it a 5 Star!
