Lost and Foundling (The Hollywood Detective Book 2) Kindle Edition
Immerse yourself in the glamorous world of 1930s Hollywood with these classic detective novels
Fading movie star Elisabeth Clay had been hoping to adopt a baby from a Los Angeles orphanage. But when she returns to Hollywood after filming on location, she discovers her beautiful baby girl has disappeared.
Elisabeth turns to the city’s finest detective agency—Spencer McCoy and Associates—for help. There’s just one problem: Spencer McCoy is in jail and the associate in question has only been in the detective business for a little over a week
Can feisty Rose Randall beat the odds and find Elisabeth’s baby? Can she also figure out a way to get her boss out of jail? One thing’s for sure, she’s certainly going to give it everything she’s got.
Join Rose as she blisters through 1930s Tinseltown in a light-hearted caper that features plenty of glamor, heaps of adventure and more than a hint of romance.
Praise for The Hollywood Detective:
“Peopled with a cast of fast-talking dames and wise-cracking dudes this is a compelling whodunnit in its own right but also a glorious pastiche of the kind of movies that Dick Powell and Myrna Loy might have made in a parallel universe.”
“If you like Chandler, Perry Mason, Chinatown… then you will love The Hollywood Detective, a fun detective series set in 1930s Hollywood. Spencer McCoy is the private investigator who likes courting women and catching waves in between trying to solve mysteries. Predictably, for this style of thriller set in the Golden Age of the Hollywood, it’s Spencer’s female assistant Rose Randall – a classic lady detective – who has the brains.”
“Brilliant setting with engaging central characters. The story rips along. It’s funny and tense by turns.”

THE HOLLYWOOD DETECTIVE SERIES
Set during the Golden Age of Hollywood, The Hollywood Detective is a classic mystery series featuring Spencer McCoy, a handsome private investigator with a reputation for getting to the truth. In a city ruled by powerful studio bosses and plagued by corrupt cops, it takes a decent man like McCoy to deliver justice.
In Lost and Foundling, the second book in the series, Spencer’s new secretary—though she’d much rather you called her his 'associate'—Rose Randall takes center stage. Rose is smart, peppy and streetwise, and the more we find out about her, the more we realize just how much she has something to prove.
Fans of Howard Hawks movies like His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby will enjoy watching the sparks fly as Rose and Spencer get each other in—and out—of trouble. If you like your mysteries with a twist, then this series will keep you guessing right till the end.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2014The first book had a great balance of humor and action without being over the top.
The Author(s) have created a spunky sometimes actress with intelligence and guts.
This was the great era of film history and we are introduced to many Stars of the era.
"Lost and Foundling", continues the story and loses none of the charm of the first book.
Read them both ,you won't be disappointed.
I'm looking forward to the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2014A great and fun chase through the times, stars and the late 1930's City of the Angels to correct an adoption, solve a mystery and link a connection. Big money and powerful fixers lurk in the background, waiting to pounce. Faint clues and fast thinking win the day. A well-rounded sequel to the first of this series and well worth the time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2018I very much enjoyed the authors ability to get the reader to get invested in the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2014I love stories that transpire in the 1930s--and especially detectives stories. However, some of the stories I have read would qualify as extremely "cheesy". This sequel to the Hollywood Detective was entertaining and kept my interest throughout. I've signed up for any updates on future stories written by Martha Steinway.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2014Very fun book and interesting follow up to the first one. A few too many name droppings of old stars, but doing a good job of finding the old noir theme.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2018If read book one you will know that this takes place in 1939 in Hollywood.
Rose Randall (Red) was hired by Elizabeth Clay, an actress. She was supposed to adopt, a young girl named Eleanor. But when Miss Clay went to pick up Eleanor they no longer her there. The Nuestra Senora Orphanage, Glendale. Which was sold to another group to run this Orphange & some others in California.
Now Rose needs to find who adopted Eleanor. She tells her best friend Thelma Barr, who's an actress for RKO Studios. Thelma & Rose came up with idea for Rose to go to orphanage saying she is pregnant.
While this is going on Spencer is in jail because he had stolen a Cadillac, owned by MGM big boss, Mr. Strickling. And also had possession of drugs for different actors. Now Rose needs to find something that will get him released from jail.
There is so much more to this story you need to read this book.
Will Rose be able to get Spencer released from jail and can she find Eleanor?
I enjoyed this book and I hope you will to!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014So often I've been disappointed by the sequel to a book that I've enjoyed, but that's definitely not the case with this follow-up to The Hollywood Detective. Martha Steinway has created a thoroughly believable and engaging character in Rose Randall and the setting of late 30s Hollywood feels really authentic so the appearance of some of the great stars of the Golden Age of cinema is entirely appropriate. This book would be the perfect travel companion - it's not great literature but it is intelligent, engaging and hooks you from the start. I hope it won't be too long to wait before the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2014I believe there are two books so far in this series. I actually read the first one about three months ago but forgot that I had. That should have told me something but I went ahead and bought this second one. And then realized why I had forgotten the first one. At no point in this book did I recall any of these characters; how they got together; how the detective agency was formed; nothing! That's because these characters are altogether forgettable; not at all interesting or even especially likeable. The plot was ok but it ended so abruptly. It was as though the writer got tired of this story and decided to wrap it up in a few short pages. Come to think of it, that was actually ok with me because I was frankly tired of reading this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Good Story The Second Adventure For Private Investigators Set In Hollywood In 1939
Another good story. The second episode in the series. Probably not as good, as the previous one? What this does do is develop the character of Rose more. Or ‘Red’ as Spencer, likes to call her.
Picking up soon after the first book ended. Twenty-Three year old Rose Randall, who originally arrived in Tinsel Town, a budding actress. Then trying waitressing in bars across Los Angeles. Before teaming up with private investigator Spencer McCoy as his secretary.
She now finds herself, his associate. Not only having to try, to get the LAPD to release McCoy after he had been set up following the Clara Lockhart case. She has to keep the business going.
A new client calls. Her name is Elisabeth Clay. A one time big movie star. The leading roles have now dried up. With more time on her hands. Miss Clay has a desire to adopt children. Not an easy thing for a divorcee to do via the relevant authorities.
So, why not go to a local orphanage? Where there would be few or no questions asked. However, the baby girl, who was the chosen one, has disappeared. Returned to the mother? Adopted by someone else? Or has the child been kidnapped?
Just going to need a Hollywood-based detective to do some investigating. Is this the making of Rose being a gumshoe?
