This is a story of a shuttle theif, Barry Carpentier who has been contacted to steal a shuttle that happens to belong to Kiera Michelle Alexander, the Mage-Queen of Mars. Things go horribly wrong when he discovereds the Mage-Queen has been drugged and is on the shuttle.

What happens next is a page turning action packed life and death thriller for the both of them.

As usual the Author's characterization is superb with very interesting realistic dialog in this prequel to Nemesis of Mars.

I found this a very satisfying read - enjoy.

I've read all the series books to this point (& the two following, because I got them out of order). I particularly like the new character introduced, and am keen to see more about him, and his unique gifts in future books. Barry will make an interesting and energetic partner to the young Mage Queen. 💕

This story takes place before Starship’s Mage 13. A fun, too short story introducing the Mage-Queen’s new lover, Barry Carpentier.

Barry is far more than the simple thief he seems, possessing a skill previously unknown in this universe: He’s a techno-mage, using his magic to affect technology around him, and, unwittingly, foiling Nemesis’s plan to kidnap the Mage-Queen.

How will Mars use Barry’s new magical abilities and how long before Nemesis learns of Barry’s new magic and decides they want Barry more than the Mage-Queen?

I like the Starships Mage Universe and have read all the books. This is a nice story about how the Mage Queen, Kiera Alexander, finds her companion. It’s a good story that goes by too quickly but is definitely worth a read. Like some other reviewers, I hope the characters are given their own book and adventures in a future full length novel.
I received a copy of this book in advance of publication.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, but an essential part of the main story arc
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 23, 2023
I actually read this out of sequence, and I think it would have been better if I read it before reading the resolution of this situation.

Once I did read it, when I got to the end I was left with a feeling that there ought to have been more of it. I can't really say what's missing, just that it ended too soon.

Yet it does stand alone from the next book as trying the two into one would have been too much for one volume, and it would have confused it's nature of being part of Roslyn Chamber's personal plot arc.

So here we are with a tiny view into the world of Queen Kiera. It's good, but not enough.

    More please!
