by JJ Barnes
★★★★★
Lilly Prospero And The Magic Rabbit is the first book in The Lilly Prospero Series by JJ Barnes.
Fifteen year old Lilly is lonely and unpopular, struggling to make friends and fit in at her new school. When she meets magical talking rabbit Jeffrey, everything changes.
She realises her drawings are coming to life, she suddenly becomes important and interesting to a world of exciting and magical people, and she finds a new best friend in Saffron. But as Lilly's power grows, the world becomes more dangerous and complicated.
Soon the people around her are forcing her to choose; the incredible power that she's becoming addicted to, or the friendship with Saffron.
Lilly Prospero And The Magic Rabbit explores the corrupting effect of power, and the value of friendship.

About the author

I’m JJ, I’m an author, writer, screenwriter, filmmaker, YouTuber and artist. My first novel, Lilly Prospero And The Magic Rabbit was the first release from Siren Stories and launched the universe; find all my books here.
I am the editor of The Table Read Magazine, where I am sharing the writing and work of other creatives including authors, artists, filmmakers, actors and more. My goal is to support and inspire other writers on their journey and to help get more stories out into the world. I love the creative community so much and being able to be a voice of encouragement to those around me is so important.
Our first feature film, Hollowhood, is out now. It was written and directed by Jonathan McKinney and myself, and whilst we have been somewhat delayed by the pandemic interfering, we are very proud of how it has been received!
My art is an old passion I have recently developed into a career. I love drawing, creating digital pictures, and animating photographs. I also sell designs, both hand drawn and digital, on my Redbubble Shops on fashion and accessories.
I live and works from home with my writing partner, Jonathan McKinney, our three children, Rose, Ezekiel and Buffy, and our extremely foolish Springer Spaniel, Molly.
I’m a big fan reading books, watching TV, and falling asleep during movies. I drink too much coffee in the morning, too much wine in the evening, and eat too much cheese at all times.
Come find me on social media and chat to me. I love hearing about your writing and art, so let's connect!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2018I couldn't put it down. Stayed up all night reading. I felt like I was there. The book just pulls you in and the characters are so well written. I can't wait to read the next book! Great read. Highly recommend! I'm a huge fan of fantasy/magic genre. I really loved the adventure and suspense. It was a bit dark at times and I like that too. If you loved Harry Potter but like darker themes and prefer a strong female lead.... This is your book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute cracker of a first book.
I bought Lilly Prospero and the Magic Rabbit last night and devoured it in 5 minutes flat. Well no, it was more like 2 hours but I really couldn't put it down. What a lovely book, J J Barnes makes you feel for the characters, whether it's to love them or in some cases actually want them to suffer(Una)! Watching the girls grow and learn was wonderful. It takes a fair bit to make me emotional while reading but definitely leaked a little at one point, and I'd be surprised if you read this and don't too. I finished this and have immediately bought the second book in the series, I'm looking forward to reading it very much. Well done on a cracker of a first book J.J, keep 'em coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and highly recommended
Lilly Prospero and the Magic Rabbit is an excellent and delightful book, which I highly recommend.
Thanks to a rich vocabulary and talented writing, this book brings a lot of images as you read it, making the reading full of life. I believe that is a pleasure for a lot of people, but it also was useful for me, as a non-native English speaker; images were there in my mind, letting me keep reading, before checking for some words in the dictionary.
For the same reason, and because the storyline is really good, it makes the book suitable for younger readers, or listeners. Beside the story itself, the book contains (obvious yet subtle) messages about people's behaviour, making the reading even more interesting for teenagers and adults.
Yes, an excellent read. Once finished, you just want to read another one!! Which is fine, book 2 is now available (Lilly Prospero And The Mermaid's Curse).

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling story
The writing drew me in immediately; the book is effortless to read. The characters are interesting and imperfect. They grapple with complex ideas and don't always make the easy (or right) choices. I enjoyed the various types of magic and the way they complimented and opposed each other. I was sad each time I had to put the book down and looked forward to picking it up again. I look forward to reading more of these characters and their universe!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read! A page turner! <3
As a veteran reader of fantasy and YA I went in to this book thinking I knew exactly what was in store for me. I knew I would like it from the description but I was not expecting to love it as much as I do. The characters are loveable, convincing, funny and relatable. I laughed and cried and turned the pages so fast that I read it again straight away. I read the book in one go and have not bought the next one. A fine world to get in on any day 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable
I have rarely been able to read a book cover to cover like I used to do since I had my son. Today was a different matter. I built a train track and set my son to work entertaining himself whilst I read this wonderfully written story.
JJ Barnes has a wonderful imagination and is able to drive home real messages to those who read their stories. A modern day extended fable almost!
Can't wait for more from this talented newly discovered author!
