4.4 out of 5 stars 505 ratings

It’s Christmas time in London! Bring on the lights twinkling along Regent Street, the Christmas tree in Covent Garden, mince pies and boozy hot chocolate—and one drop-dead gorgeous Scottish billionaire to go with it all, please…

Aoife O’Sullivan is eager to see what this December will bring. She’s determined to let go of the heartache of the past year and move forward. No more thinking about the love she lost. To find her spirit, Aoife decides to create a bucket list of festive sights to see in London to celebrate her first Christmas in the city.

Aoife’s world, however, is turned upside down when Santa brings her something Scottish and sexy in the form of her ex. As soon as Aoife sees Jack MacInally, she knows she’s not over him. Both made serious mistakes, leading to their messy breakup. When Jack suggests taking the month of December—all thirty-one days—to start afresh, Aoife leaps at the chance to be with the man she has always loved.

Yet as they try to rekindle their romance, their past problems threaten to snuff it out. Will each of them be able to let go of their guilt and truly move forward? Will the gift of a second chance romance be something magical—or will this present end up returned to sender?

Wonderful second chance holiday romance!
5 out of 5 stars
Wonderful second chance holiday romance!
I have to say this may be one of the best Christmas romances that I've ever had the pleasure of reading! I've been struggling with feeling the season, but the moment I started reading this amazing story about Jack and Aoife (Ee-Fa), the Christmas spirit bloomed inside me. This is an amazing story of forgiveness and love around the best time of year. You will laugh - a lot, you'll cry at the raw relatable emotions, and you'll meet new friends while reading this book. Jack and Aoife grow thoughout the story as individutals and as a couple, as the book goes on, learning that love isn't something that just disappears. The discriptions of Christmas through out London and Edinburgh are enough to make me want to book a trip for the holidays next year just to see them in person with the one I love! If you're looking for a holiday romance that will leave you with a smile on your face, this is the book for you. ***I received a free ARC from the author, but my opinions are my own.***

Have you ever looked back at the one who got away and said, "What if?"

What if what I thought was a blatant lie, or a lie by omission, really wasn't?
What if I didn't say those hurtful things?
What if I didn't walk away?
What if I stayed and listened?

In "Making Spirits Bright" by Aven Ellis, Aoife (pronounced Ee-Fa) has spent the last year asking herself those questions -- and more. The prior year, she met Jack in an Irish pub. Despite rugby differences, they had an instant connection that quickly grew. Aoife knew Jack as a handsome uni student from Scotland who was funny, charming and all the other good things. But, there was one piece of information that was missing. When she found out Jack's secret at a party, Aoife's perception was marred. Without listening to Jack's side, Aoife made a rash decision that would impact her choices for the next year. Aoife finished uni, left Ireland (her home country) for an internship in London at Connectivity (a premier media conglomerate), made new friends, and had new experiences -- all while deeply missing Jack.

"Making Spirits Bright" opens at Christmas a year after Aoife and Jack met. With Christmas a time of forgiveness and hope, Aoife decides she must learn from her mistakes and move forward to finding a new relationship. She enlists the help of her friend and fellow Connectivity intern, Lauren (previously introduced in "Connectivity 2.0"), to ensure that Aoife doesn't back out of putting herself forward at a holiday party hosted by Lauren's boyfriend, Oliver. It's here that Aiofe sees the unexpected: Jack is in London to attend the same party and he's not alone. At the same time, Jack sees Aoife and is determined to talk with her, to share his story and his truth.

"Making Spirits Bright" progresses with Aoife and Jack learning to forgive, learning to communicate and learning to trust each other and themselves. It doesn't happen overnight, though. Aoife and Jack must work to put aside past hurts and firmly live in the present rather than continuously visiting their past. It takes a monumental event for them both to see what truly is at stake if they don't put the past where it belongs.

In true Aven Ellis style, everything is well-researched and thought out. Her characters are three-dimensional, with flaws. The book settings are described in a way in which the reader feels as if they are in that location. Overall, the plot doesn't feel contrived and it's not a burden to slog through to see if Aoife and Jack get an HEA. "Making Spirits Bright" is the third in Ellis' British Isles Billionaires series but can be read as a standalone. You'll see some previous characters make return appearances as well as new characters who could find their stories told later in this series.

Overall, what's not to like about a second-chance romance happening over Christmas in the UK? In short, nothing. Once gifts are wrapped, opened and shared, give yourself the gift of reading Ellis' newest novel. You won't regret it.

    Book 1 of 2022.

As a big fan of Aven Ellis’ books, I was eagerly awaiting this Christmas themed title. Ellis did not disappoint. This book is considered the third in a series, but has enough backstory that it can stand alone. Disclaimer, I have read all of the series.

Pros: I enjoyed the blending of England and Scotland. As the characters discuss differences in the two cultures, it was interesting to learn different words and ideas that do not translate.
The characters are enjoyable, with enough rounding out that they aren’t too static.
The theme of forgiveness and moving past arguments and faults is strong. This is especially poignant at Christmastime!
This book has just enough sweetness to make it uplifting and enjoyable without crossing over into the obnoxious.

Cons: This book follows a formula of boy meets girl, boy and girl start to fall in love, girl gets frightened and tries to break up, they reconcile. If you don’t like predictability, this is not the title for you!

I love a romance with a HEA but an interesting journey as well. Avel Ellis always delivers. This installment in her Brutish Isles Billionaires series ticks off my boxes for travel, well-rounded likeable characters, humor and Christmas. It's perfect for relaxing after work, having a cozy time at home or transporting yourself across the pond if you're from the US or Canada. I highly recommend this author, and luckily for readers this is not her only series!

The entire series is from her POV and spends a lot of time revisiting thoughts and feelings. It might feel like too much sometimes, but it is exactly how an over-thinker would be running thoughts in their head!

Aoife and Jack are together for a second chance and it was great! I don’t normally enjoy second chances. (I hate the ‘other people’ and ‘regret’ that dominate the storylines.) This book was centered on letting go of the guilt/regret and moving forward. It takes the entire story, but the HEA is worth it!

The complete HEA won’t come until the 4th book is out….. I’m eagerly awaiting it’s arrival!

This was just ok for me. I appreciated that there wasn’t a ton of unnecessary angst about getting back together, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of thoughts on repeat by the FMC which got old.

Just not a lot interesting happening and what bothers me the most was supposedly this is a Scotsman and an Irish woman, and there was no accent written into the dialogue whatsoever. I’ve read a lot of novels where they do this, and it changes the tone and helps you lose yourself in the characters and story. It just wasn’t believable that these people were Irish and Scottish. And it seemed very lazy on the part of the author to not even make an attempt at it. I also didn’t like the FMC name, it was virtually impossible to remember how to say it, because it felt so weird. Seems like she could’ve chosen a Irish name that was more easily recognizable. This continued to trip me up as I had to keep, reminding myself how to say the name every time I saw it on the page which took me out of the story.

On top of that I couldn’t stand the slang term “ heavy” they kept using , which was supposed to mean “very” in Scotland, but it just came across so weird and out of place.

Not a bad read, but not great either.

I read the first two books in this series and have been patiently waiting for this story. Although this functions well as a stand-alone, it’s even better after the other two. This is Aoife and Jack’s second chance love story. It’s great fun though to see the characters in the first two books. The descriptions of the scenes and clothes make you think you’re right there seeing it for yourself. Very well written with some twists and turns along the way. Now it’s time to try to patiently wait for Nicole’s story!
