The Taexali Game: A Hazardous Time Travel Adventure set in Roman Scotland Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

“The Taexali Game takes the idea of Time Travel and sets it in a computer game thereby making the concept wholly believable. I thoroughly bought into the idea”.

Ancient Caledonia in AD 210 is awesome! Life is expendable. Survival is not guaranteed.

When the Rubidium Time-Leap flips Aran and his two best friends back to AD 210, the reality is incredible. Their task list includes solving a local mystery but, when Roman Emperor Severus and his legions heap death and destruction on the local tribes, it’s horrifying.

Giving help to Celts and Romans alike becomes a lethal assignment—some local chiefs are as foul as Severus and his beastly son Caracalla. Dicing with death becomes the norm for the time travellers.

Will Aran complete the mission and return home unharmed?

“If you’re looking for a novel with a difference, that combines time travel with 'computer generated' game play and 'real life' action, that educates as it entertains… you may well have found it.”

The Taexali Game will appeal to readers from early teens onwards who are interested in adventure fiction set in Roman Britain.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The plot was clever, weaving together the historical conflict, and the attempts of the main characters to resolve the tasks they were sent into the game to deal with."

"...this was one of the most original approaches to time travel, by using developing technology we can all relate to."

"As usual, Nancy Jardine's characterisation is fantastic and the action never stops. You are gripped and have to read the next chapter."

The Taexali Game was my weekend read and it was thoroughly enjoyed with everything I expect from a novel in this genre. The plot was cleverly constructed and most importantly with all plot threads resolved by the end of the book. It had an eclectic array of characters which were very easy to visualize and pacing was strong. No negative points from my perspective. Just a good story very well told and very much enjoyed.

A fun read. Great YA back too Rome

This combination of fantasy and history, linked by an interactive computer game, is sure to appeal to a wide audience. The geographical location of the story is used well in this tale of the attempts of the Romans to subjugate the peoples of the North and though there is little historical evidence of events, the writer skilfully creates a most believable world.
The characters are well-drawn and the action is fast-paced as befits the idea of a computer game. As Aran, Fianna and Bruce attempt to complete the tasks set by Callum, we are swept back to a time far more dangerous than our own and are able to explore the risks of time travel from the comfort of an armchair.
This is the first in a series and the underlying premise of a particular kind of time travel promises well for future stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly absorbing.

I’ve always been drawn to novels with a time travel element but find few novels deliver on their promise. The Taexali Game takes the idea of Time Travel and sets it in a computer game thereby making the concept wholly believable. I thoroughly bought into the idea. This is a fast paced, well written and thoroughly absorbing novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enough to Satisfy the Desires of any Techno Addict

An entertaining romp, with a combination of time travelling, gaming and "real life" action. Enough to satisfy the desires of any techno addict. I'm no gamer and was out of my depth at first, but soon became drawn into this fast-paced quest with a strong sense of history, and can only admire the skill of grandmother Nancy Jardine in using a meld of fiction, research and fantasy to educate the young of today in the world of ancient Roman Britain.

I found the Taexali Game to be a very enjoyable read. I have picked up a few novels over the years with different slants on time travel, but thought this was one of the most original approaches to it, by using developing technology we can all relate to. The other thing I loved about the book was the setting. Loving all things Scotland, I enjoyed being whisked back in time, and found myself easily imagining the events there as they were so well described. I also thought the characters were very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended Celtic/Roman historical novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2016
Being a fan of Simon Scarrow & Bernard Cornwell's historical novels, I loved Nancy Jardine's Celtic Fervour series. When I started this novel I will admit that it was a slight struggle for the first couple of chapters as the writer very cleverly introduced the concept of the ultimate role playing interactive simulation game. However, once the teenagers were transported back in time to the Roman attempt to take control of the North East of Scotland, then I was immediately hooked. As usual, Nancy's characterisation is fantastic and the action never stops. You are gripped and have read the next chapter.

Although this is sort of aimed at teenagers I would recommend this for all lovers of historical novels - just persevere with it if you are an old fart like me and some of this first chapter(s) goes over your head!
