4.2 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

Andy Veracruz is content with his life as the leader of a mariachi band, but when his lover is accused of murder, he has no choice but to defend her. In the process he faces the loss of his strongest loyalties as well as his entire career.Early Readers Say….What do you get when you mix warm sultry days, late nights filled with Mariachi music, a jealous husband and a beautiful seductive wife? D.R. Ransdell's new book, Mariachi Murder will plunge you into the smoky and seamy world of machismo, musicians, and the women who love them.Pour a cool drink, sit back and enjoy a glimpse into a world few people will experience outside the pages of this book. You will learn about the music and people that make it, and find out that sometimes there are no neat answers.--I.C. Enger, Author of BLUE ICE “It's mystery, music, and murder, Southern California style. Andy Veracruz just wants to play his music, but when his girlfriend wants a baby, his boss goes on a trip and the boss' sexy wife gets involved with murder, Andy just can't keep from jumping into the thick of it. Ransdell burns up the nightclub scene with a slick and saucy story to keep your feet moving to the tunes and your mind guessing till the end.” -- Stephen L. Brayton, author of Alpha Mariachi Murders is set near LA, in the fictional Squid Bay. It's summer with long, stifling nights and no air conditioning. The heroine Yiolanda is a sensuous temptress with a murky past. The hero Andy Veracruz is a thirtyish man, who although he refuses to be tied down by anyone or anything but his music, is drawn deeper and deeper into Yiolanda's web….So get a copy quick and feel the heat of summer begin.--J. L Greger, Author of COMING FLU

A mystery with characters you want to meet and music you wish you could hear. For those of us who like Mariachi music this is an especially enjoyable read. You get to be in the band and in the mind of the band leader, Andy Veracruz. But you don't have to like Mariachi to enjoy the plot twists and turns. You start guessing who done it right away and enjoy the mystery all the way through. No moral soul searching, just good fun. Once I started to read, I didn't stop until the end.

I'm hoping this is the first of a series, and sounds like it might be. I want to get to know Andy, his talented brother and his brothers on stage a little better.

Very well-written murder mystery with never a dull moment. Its humor reminds me of the Nero Wolfe series. Plot gets a bit complicated in the second half, but that's right up there with other noirs like Out of the Past or The Big Sleep (not bad company). You don't have to be a Mariachi buff to understand the pull that music and music scene has on the main characters. Andy, our musician stuck in the center of this mystery, is very resourceful, which is good considering that when it comes to understanding human nature he is out of his depth. Like I say in the headline - a real page-turner and a fun read.

I recently discovered author D.R.Ransdell series with a Mariachi twist - the main character Andy Veracruz plays in a Mariachi band yet finds he has a nose for trouble and becomes a detective by default - so you just know he is bound for trouble - great read with chips and guacamole and maybe a beer or margarita! I should have read the worst review before I bought the book. It isn't much. All those good reviews must be from friends.

Mariachi Murder presents a window into a subculture most of us know nothing about. The Mexican tunes, the camaraderie among mariachi musicians, the politics of operating a Mexican restaurant are all part of the scene. And Andy Veracruz--sometimes hapless, sometimes shrewd, but always engaging--is a unique character in the mystery genre. All in all, Mariachi Murder is a compelling novel, filled with lots of complicated plot twists and a logical, yet unexpected conclusion.
