The Marquess Method (The Beautiful Barringtons Book 3) Kindle Edition
Lady Theodosia Barrington is practically begging to be ruined.
That’s the assumption of the Marquess of Haven after spying Theodosia at a house party given by the Duke of Granby. After his father left him little else but a title and a crumbling estate, Haven is in desperate need of an heiress. Not only is Theodosia rich as Croesus and beautiful, but she’s also a Barrington. Her brother is Leo Murphy, owner of Elysium and the man Haven holds responsible for ruining his father.
Theodosia is the solution to all of Haven’s problems.
Lady Theodosia has long been infatuated with the Earl of Blythe. In an effort to prove her affection and perhaps induce him to offer for her, Theodosia paints a scandalous self-portrait of herself for Blythe as a birthday gift. The small token of affection is incredibly improper. Her behavior reckless.
She regrets gifting the miniature to Blythe immediately.
Desperate to save her reputation before it can be destroyed and escape humiliation, Theodosia makes another rash decision. Retrieve the miniature from Blythe’s study.
Except the miniature is gone. And the only thing waiting for her is the Marquess of Haven.
And her own ruination.

About the author

Kathleen Ayers has been a hopeful romantic since the tender age of fourteen when she first purchased a copy of Sweet Savage Love at a garage sale while her mother was looking at antique animal planters. Since then she’s read hundreds of historical romances and fallen in love dozens of times. In particular, she adores handsome, slightly damaged men with a wicked sense of humor. On paper, of course.
Kathleen lives in Houston and is married with one college-aged son and two very spoiled dogs.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLady Theodosia "Theo" Barrington is the daughter and sister of the Duke of Averell - she is beautiful, bold and rich, but woefully blind without her spectacles. Theo is an artist whose speciality is painting miniatures. She is completely infatuated with the Earl of Blythe, a handsome golden gentlemen. At a house party she does her best to gain the Earl's attention, tripping and crashing into things since she refuses to wear her glasses. Also at the party is Ambrose, the impoverished Marquess of Haven, who needs a large dowry to restore the estate his father bankrupted in his grief of losing his wife. Theo meets him by spilling her drink over his coat. Ambrose has a secret agenda - he blames Leo, Theo's illegitimate half brother, owner of Elysium, the gaming hell, for not stopping his father's ruin including losing his young sister's dowry. He had many chances to compromise Theo, gaining not only her dowry, but revenge, but could not hurt her in that way. To gain Blythe's attention, Theo paints a scandalous miniature of herself and leaves it in his study during his birthday celebration. When she informs him during their dance of her special gift, he reminds her that no gentleman would accept it. Beginning to realize her error, Theo enters the study to retrieve the gift, but finds it missing - taken by Ambrose. In her attempt to get it back, the door opens and Blythe's mother along with her son and Theo's mother discover them in what looks like an embrace. Ruined and compromised, Theo and Ambrose are forced to marry, much to her and her family's disdain. What starts out to be a disaster soon becomes her unwilling attraction to Ambrose. His estate is worse than Theo could imagine, but she is drawn to his lame young sister and his father's drunken twin. While repairing the estate there is the beginning of a romantic relationship and many questions about his father's ruin. A wonderful story of not only how love can grow, but how greed, envy and betrayal ruined a life and nearly took another. A magical story in this continuing fascinating series you cannot put down!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe third Barringston sibling in this case Theodosia Barrington is short sighted but a gifted portrait painter and infatuated with the golden handsome Earl of Blythe. She is determined to marry him and concocts a way to ensure his affections for her and a marriage proposal.
Although the daughter and sister of a Duke, the Barrington sisters are looked down upon by some of the ton including the countess of Blythe (the mother) who loathes the idea of Theo as a prospective Bride for her son. (If you have not read the previous books in the series do grab them, it will make it all the more fun to read this book).
In comes the most improvised marquess, Ambrose L the Marquess of Haven, friends of Granby and Blythe and who seems to hold a grudge with Barrington Brother Leo Murphy (not the Duke Brother- both brothers run a gaming house Elysium). Théo has had some mishaps with Haven, from their very initial meeting. Without her glasses she flounders around which people mistake for clumsiness, well it is in a way, but she, Theo wishes to appear “non blue stocking-like” and ends up bumping into things and on one accasion spilling wine on Haven’s one decent evening coat; and he has no choice but to borrow Blythes’. The author creates humorous relationship even between the friends when Blythe can be at daggers with Haven but will still loan him his good evening coat.
Haven has set his eyes on Theo but he is somewhat confused when his initial plans to seduce Theo seem to topple, for he begins to genuinely like the blue sticking gal. He comes to her rescue, when Theo in one of her misguided adventures which involves a semi revealing self mini portrait herself, lands right into Havens lap and the inevitable scandal, compromised!! Haven and Theo are to wed and the adventures begin from there. The Barrington dowager duchess, (who has her own book btw), does not force her daughter into the marriage, but encourages Theo to see better reason. The Barrington family are all bewildered by the impoverished Haven with a huge appetite (for food), and his reasons to marry Theo. There is so much fun and romance in the book, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Once Theo reaches the ramshackle Haven estate the narrative gets even better. A definite must read Ayers book.
The sibling relationships is well drawn out and the romance is fun.
Mrs Ayers is a newer historical romance author and her books are engaging and writes for a readers who enjoy good narratives and strong characters and staying loyal to the regency era.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTheodosia Barrington, artist and daughter (and now sister) of a Duke, has fancied herself in love with the Earl of Blythe. Tormenting herself with the thought for an overlong time, to the point of not wearing the glasses she needs to see pretty much anything. At a house party, she makes the acquaintance of Ambrose, the Marquess of Haven, an impoverished man who managed to set her on her ear. But she tries not to think of it. Haven, on the other hand, can’t seem to stop thinking about Theo. Not only is she rich as anything, but he blames someone in her family for the circumstances what’s left of his family and his estate are in. But then, he also finds her gorgeous, intriguing, infuriating. And they keep coming together, only to find themselves forced to wed. Will either of them see what lies ahead if not for stubbornness and pride?
The third book in The Beautiful Barringtons series. It can be read as a standalone, but indeed you’ll want to read the whole series. I already had a soft spot for Haven from the second book, and I couldn’t wait to see what nonsense Theo was going to get up to. These two are perfect. Definitely recommend this book.

Sometimes the descriptions of what the characters were feeling felt too much but it doesn't take away from the wonderful writing and the quality of the story.
