Mating the Omega (Mercy Hills Pack Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,032 ratings

Omega wolf Jason and his family have been on the run for six years to keep Jason from being forcefully mated to his pack’s cruel Alpha. When a brutal attack leaves his father desperately injured, Jason comes to the conclusion that it’s time to call it quits. Terrified as he is to deliver himself into an Alpha’s power, he makes a deal to mate with the Alpha of the richest pack in the country. And discovers that he’d rather mate the Alpha’s handsome Head of Security.

When Mac captures the feral shifter that climbed the walls surrounding the Mercy Hills Pack enclave, he feels for the young shifter’s fear, though he knows his Alpha isn’t the sort of shifter Jason believes he is. He’d be happy to see the two mated, except that, as time goes by, it becomes more and more difficult to deny his own feelings for the young, damaged omega.

A sudden turn of events sees Mac and Jason mated and expecting, but Jason’s old pack isn’t done with them yet.

The first book in the Mercy Hills series introduces us to a contemporary world that’s so similar to ours, except for a significant difference: shifters are real and known. In this world, shifters are a minority population, a sentient species so similar to humans in their two-legged form, but not human. In the United States of America, about 100 years ago, shifters were forced into enclosures and slapped with extreme regulations that dictate how they can live, work, travel, and be buried. (The enclosures remind me of a mixture of Japanese-American prison camps, American Indian tribal lands, with all the prejudice and bigotry that minorities of every type have faced.) This is a world where shifters aren’t allowed to be free, and pack laws and customs rule the enclosures. Hierarchy is important to how packs function, and traditions and expectations are assigned almost at birth depending on the dynamic of the shifter. Jason is an Omega shifter from the Montana Border enclosure. Life was normal for him as an Omega shifter, until he experienced his heat not only during the Spring but in the Fall as well. Having a heat twice a year marked him as a “True Omega”, something valuable to be possessed and mated – regardless of how young he might be. In a world where shifters are despised and Omegas are seen as mere chattel, it takes brave parents to decide to escape, run, and hide from their old pack rather than see their child assaulted and mated against his will.

Jason has been running for six years when he decides enough is enough. His father is injured, and their lifestyle is no longer feasible. Sooner or later they are going to be caught – either by Montana Border pack members or the human authorities. Jason comes to the conclusion that is better to decide his own fate, and make a deal with an Alpha that will provide his father and himself protection as well as some measure of happiness for himself. And this decision is the start of a beautiful love story and the opening scene to the fantastic Mercy Hills saga.

I’ve read this book and listened to the audio multiple times, and each time I read it or listen, I love it more. The writing duo of Ann-Katrin Byrde have created such an intricate and dynamic world. Each character, whether it’s a main character or supporting character, is richly developed with depth and texture. The writing style is smooth, vibrant, and detailed. The plot seems simple at first: an Omega running away from an evil Alpha only to find love – yet it’s not. Ann-Katrin Byrde bring so many other elements into the plot that it’s not simple, but setting the stage for the bigger, over-arching series plot. This may sound a little intimidating, but don’t worry, the plot may be intricate, but it’s not complicated or hard to follow, and the love story is still center stage.

Nick J. Russo is a perfect narrator for this series. He does an amazing job with embodying the characters and making the action scenes even more thrilling. I enjoy his performance immensely.

This is a fantastic series and I highly encourage anyone who enjoys well-written Omega-verse books to pick this up.

I really enjoyed this book and really loved the mmc's
The only thing that bothered me is some unanswered questions. What is a true omega?? I don't think they every actually answered it there were kinda hints that they might know but it never went into detail. And also what were Jasons "powers"? Again Jason kinda hinted towards the end but it seemed as he himself didnt know what was going on and i as the reader assumed thats what his "powers" were. And it bothered me that it seems that abel and mac knew from their conversation towards the end and jason was determined to find out but it was never brought up again
I am hoping it will be answered later on in the series but assuming that jason is a true omega and the only one with the powers ect. Wont be brought up with other omegas in the series

    "Decent story with fantastic narration"
Would you consider the audio edition of Mating the Omega to be better than the print version?
I didn't read this book but I think with the issues I had with the storyline that listening was the better choice for me since I'm a big fan of the narrator.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ann-Katrin Byrde? Why or why not?
I will actually listen to the next book, that is if the 2nd book is brought to audible, because I'm intrigued with this world where Shifters and Humans coexist.

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
My opinion is that when you have a book that you have some issues with (content, storyline or characters) are brought to life by talented narrators, they turn what would have been just an okay read into an amazing story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I actually enjoyed the way Jason and Mac danced around their attraction for each other early on. It was mutual and undeniable but they were determined to stay the course of not being together in order to keep their word.

    Any additional comments?
There were a few eye rolling moments and I think the story arc of Omegas being beneath other shifters, basically used as breaders, is starting to get a bit worn. But I loved the romance between Mac and Jason and I was intrigued by the aspect of the story where as humans knew about shifters, that we lived together, though not harmoniously. I hope the next book will be brought to life by Nick Russo, his vocal skills are nothing short of spectacular, and I get to see more of the alliance that was forged at the end of this book.

I love the characters. Jason isn't your common omega that submits easily. He is fierce, a trait that attracts Mac to him. I just hope there's more interaction between MC's to show how they fell for each other.

The story is great but I think the ending was a bit rushed. There are unanswered questions.
The reason why Jason was on the run because he is True Omega yet it was not answered on what a True Omega is? Why his previous pack's alpha was after him? What is his true power? The first few chapters is great I love the pacing and then it went downhill.. I was like "thats it?" I'm not sure if reading the second book will give answers.

I love men on men shifter stories and could honestly read them all day.
This one was slightly different but reassuring similar in some areas (I hate it when an author writes basic facts differently even though they are written by every one else in the same consistent way).
All shifter stories have lots of sex, this one actually didn't until well over half way through. It had a captivating story line which included, but was more than, werewolves running at full moon and having sex.

I love Jason, one of the MC's if not THE MC. I loved the way he had two sides and one came out through thoughts and one through his mouth. He was feisty, loving, intelligent, caring ...... everything you'd expect from an omega but with an Alpha edge. Obvusly brought about by circumstance, but regardless, very entertaining.

The only bit that annoyed me just enough to mention but not to take away from the 5🌟's and that was the change of point of view at many of the chapters. First Jason, then Abel, then Jason, then Mac etc etc not that I disliked the different view points, I love stories written like that. Here it was difficult to determine whose pov you were reading until you had read a bit of the chapter and picked up the line of thought of what was said. That could easily have been improved, imo, by stating at the start of each chapter whose pov it was.

That said I thoroughly enjoyed this despite not having a recommendation and not having read any of this author's work before. I will be correcting that oversight immediately and as well as reading the rest of this series, I will look at her other books and keep an eye out in the future.

I would highly recommend this even if you have never read mm shifter before or if you have, but didn't really enjoy it, cos this book is different to the 'norm', definitely has a strong story line and good well written, MC's with lots of personality.
    Enjoy xxx

A slightly different take on some shifter books and all the better for it I think. Jason is a true omega a shifter who can have children. He is on the run from his pack alpha who wants to force a mating on Jason. Caught between a rock and a hard place Jason makes a deal with the alpha of the Mercy Hills Pack Abel. Mac is the alphas second but has secretly fallen for the damaged Jason. Great story good characters and a highly recommended book especially if you like shifter books. Can't wait for Abel story next.
