Mechaniek: Lost Paradise: A post apocalyptic sci-fi steampunk LGBTQ novel Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

In a distant future, in a world ravaged by a toxic war, mechanics are now the ruling class. Taliesin is a peaceful fisherman on the isle of Ethia, bearing only a large scar on his forearm from the toxic rains that ravage the planet.

One day, he is caught up in a toxic storm and saved by the renegade mechanic Merrick. They fall in love and find a tropical paradise they name “Paradise Island”. Merrick then brings Taliesin back to Ethia, promising to return after fixing his mechanical sailboat. If they were to be separated, they vow to meet again on “Paradise Island”, but Merrick never returns.

After hearing that Merrick may have been arrested for piracy, Taliesin attempts to board a mechanical galleon to the city and a mysterious man offers him to play the role of the lost prince and pretend to marry his own son in exchange for Merrick’s freedom. Little does Taliesin know that memories will resurface, confirming he was actually the lost prince, the son of the man who ordered the kidnapping of Merrick as a child and the murder of his mother…

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely immersed and mesmerized
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2024
JC Compton's innate ability to paint a picture with words had me completely immersed in this mesmerizing novel. This story is set in a futuristic apocalyptic world of Mechaniek; a place that has immerged from the great toxic war. It is a world where cities are shielded from green clouds that pour toxic acid. I was completely gripped and absorbed in the beautiful isles of Ethia and Horizon City. The author's world-class storytelling and a plethora of rich detail kept me completely intrigued. We learn about the history of the war, the mechanics school and societal structures. Through vivid descriptions, I was able to clearly see the machines and ships in this wonderful world. This cleverly structured story left me wondering what was true, what was lies and what was dreams. We are introduced to Taliesin, a young man who lives on the beautiful isles of Ethia. He is a fisherman, living a simple life. Following a chance meeting during a storm at sea he meets Merrick; a young mechanic alone on his own ship. The author had me on the edge of my seat yearning for the couple to find love and happiness together. I absolutely loved this story can't wait to read the next book. This is an easy five star review from me.
