A Merciful Promise (Mercy Kilpatrick Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 28,975 ratings

The Wall Street Journal bestselling series continues as Mercy Kilpatrick becomes embedded in the nightmare of a terrorist conspiracy.

The job: infiltrate a militia amassing illegal firearms in an isolated forest community. FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick is the ideal candidate. She knows Oregon. She’s near the compound. And having been raised among survivalists, Mercy understands the mind-set of fanatics. Lay low, follow rules, do nothing to sound an alarm, and relinquish all contact with the outside world. She’s ready to blend in.

As Mercy disappears into the winter hills, something just as foreboding emerges. Mercy’s fiancé Eagle’s Nest police chief Truman Daly, is faced with a puzzling series of murders—three men dumped in random locations after execution-style shootings.

Now, for Mercy, trapped in a culture where suspicion is second nature, and betrayal is punishable to the extreme, there is no way out. No way to call for help. And as plans for a catastrophic terrorist event escalate, there may be no way to stop them. Even if Mercy dies trying.

I have read all 6 books in this series. When I started this, I wasn’t very sure that I would finish it because I didn’t care about the cult like living much. But as before, Elliot grabbed me and drug me in. I could not wait to finish it.

This is the final book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. If you haven't read any of the previous books, you might be able to get away with reading this one as a standalone but I wouldn't recommend it. While I found Book 6 a good read and I'm sad that the series is coming to an end, some of the themes were repetitive. Working as an undercover agent at the last minute for the ATF, Mercy poses as another agent's girlfriend and goes incommunicado in an anti-government group set on protecting their second amendment right. With at least 2 ATF agents killed previously and a small fortune worth of guns being stolen, additional rumours of a potential domestic terrorism act by the off-radar group has everyone scrambling. While Mercy didn't want to go undercover after the trauma of her previous case, the fact that there might be vulnerable children at the camp has her agreeing.

    * Slight spoilers below *

Even though this group focusses on the underground militia/anti-government sentiment again, I still liked this angle in the book. As per the other novels, Truman has his own case to work on. In this instance, he's working with Evan Bolton again after several bodies turn up after being dumped on rural properties. There was plenty of suspense and danger in this book and I thought it was well-paced. I still enjoyed both of the main characters and their relationship but once again, Mercy's whereabouts are unknown and Truman is a nervous wreck.

Other exhausted plot themes were Ollie finding another body related to a case (Seriously. He found another one just driving to school), nothing really being found out by Mercy, the police and the FBI - they once again finalised the case due to luck and/or a turn of events rather than actual investigative work. Mercy was sent to investigate if American's Preserve, the underground group, had a hidden cache of weapons and what their big plans were for a potential attack - well, she found out next to nothing, couldn't report back on the small amount she did find out and ended up in big danger. This is a shame because there was so much potential here that could have been flushed out with just a bit more detail and emphasis on the actual case.

As with the previous books, some of the actions by Mercy probably weren't the choices I would peg an experienced FBI agent as having. At one point, she has an opportunity to grab a gun but thinks it's smarter to run to an unprotected area weaponless. Same goes for the FBI office in the book. Having to call in a private investigator to search for a missing person with all of the resources they have? When that person is one of their own? Nope. As Mercy goes undercover from the beginning of the book, most of the story has her and Truman apart as well, it's worth mentioning, which means that the secondary characters that readers have come to know such as Kaylie and the townsfolk are also absent.

Some of the series' familiar plot devices were wrapped up too quickly and conveniently. As with the case Mercy is on, extra detail and time spent on them would have added positively to the story. After five previous books where Mercy is at odds with her father, it's brought to a conclusion almost as an afterthought. This was disappointing. Books worth of build up for the reader to not even get a conversation between Mercy and her father that led towards the reconciliation. And then it was just all hunky dory. This was a big oversight to me. That being said, Truman and Mercy's dad had a talk and Truman was fabulous.

There was also the militia group, American's Preserve, who were careful in staying off the radar but dump three dead bodies that can be easily found and then possibly traced back to them. I get why they did it - it just seemed out of character and the reason didn't quite hold up for me, especially considering they dumped them in a matter of weeks. The story led to what could have been a big showdown between the government groups and the militia but it was over before it even began which was a shame and I think another missed opportunity as it was pretty anticlimactic. And without spoiling the details, her and Truman miss most of the end of the case and are quickly filled in by Eddie even though the entire book had been on this investigation.

I loved the family dynamic with Truman, Mercy, Kaylie and Ollie. This was tied up nicely as our happy couple finally tie the knot surrounded by the people they love. I would have liked a bit more of this as the book skipped three months ahead and then finished up so felt somewhat rushed. The ending was really sweet though and tied up nicely. Overall, it was still a good read but extra detail being included to flush out the story a bit would have made it great.

I loved this whole series - every single book - and am sad it has come to an end but happy it ended the way it did. Mercy, Truman, Ollie, and Kaylie’s have become like family, and I will miss spending my evenings with them!

For those of you who haven’t read this fantastic series I’ll just give you a bit of her beginning & why she got herself into this AMAZING predicament in an AMAZING Book 6 finale series.

In book 1 is where we meet Mercy an FBI/agent/cop strong woman. Mercy grew up living off the land, off the grid, in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Pretend her family is like the crazy survivalists from real life compounds, but a tragedy pulls her family apart and it forces her to leave home. That is where she meets police chief Truman Daly, and though they clash on many occasions, they fall in love. Mercy is still a survivalist, & her home is basically a compound, because that’s the only way she’ll stay alive if anything happens in the world or the “crazy” people she knows try to ever kill her. She keeps everything imaginable to protect herself & her niece, who is basically has been raised as her daughter. Okay..spring ahead to what I’m reviewing, Book 6, “A Merciful Promise”the finale.

Her job, (well she sort of volunteers) is with another FBI agent, pretending she is a nurse & the agent is her boyfriend. The FBI knows the compound has illegal firearms & is in an isolated area of Oregon, deep in the woods. Agent Mercy Kilpatrick is the ideal candidate. She knows Oregon, and since she was raised as a survivalist in a somewhat “weird compound”. Mercy understands the mind-set of TRUE fanatics. But, & here’s the biggest but.. she kept her ‘volunteering’ away from Truman, and has NO WAY of contacting her loved ones, FBI associates, etc. This is a ‘secret agent mission’ imagine a cop going undercover in a prison & the only one who knows you’re there is your boss! Okay, since I’ve read reviews that said “I wish I had read all the books because I was so confused with all the character and who they were. This really isn’t a stand alone book?!” WELL, I just gave you readers a heads up *WITHOUT SPOILERS” 👊 Did I help? 😁

Book 6, and until the end, I did NOT realize we were ending my favorite series🤷‍♀️?! Well..It is fast, nerve wracking, listening at night was not the best thing to do cuz it kept me up all night...I loved it! It’s action, adventure, gasps..”OH-MY-GOSH-NO-WAY! Are you KIDDING? RUN!” that’s just a sample of how I felt throughout this book. The end showed me how Mercy had grown and *without giving away spoilers* she keeps going & going through “everything” to stay alive! Not only to stay alive, but keeping up a pretense without losing it. TO THE....you’ll see..

I’m not gonna be mushy, or BEG THE AUTHOR to add just ONE-little-everyone-will-purchase book..😁😁 No really, without *spoilers* that I didn’t give a hopeful reader. This was the most exciting finale to an absolutely fantastic series! I know I will absolutely miss Mercy and Truman. Their crazy, “where is she, oh Mercy I love you, please find me, I need you” relationship. And the great storylines with every ‘Mercy’ book I’ve listened to and read! Yes I will 💯 miss my Mercy...5 ⭐️ Plus ...👋

I chose a 5* as it was the highest I could give, I've enjoyed every single series I've read I've just finished the mercy and Trueman series, Kendra writes so beautifully bring her characters to life an the town so much so after a few books you start swing it in your minds eye as real people and real towns. I can't find any faults their a a bit of everything that everyone will love to read.
What an amazing talent Kendra has. Kendra Elliotts books have been once bored me in fact I look forward to getting into bed and catching up with where I left of. I did start panicking thinking I've finished all her series but tank the stars I've found another series and a new set of characters to get to know. I think most people would love her books a bit of everything unique storylines characters you start thinking of as people you know, twists and turns and just the right amount of sexy parts to it. If only Truman was real and I looked like Mercy.
I got bored of plenty of Author a who either focus I bring so gory or going far t deep into giving long winded explanations of a police procedure sometimes I think the authors are trying to hard to make the reader think they know every detail and was once a profiler. Whereas Kendra gives you just the right amount of everything beautiful balanced. I truly hope that kendra at some point will be able to write more on Mercy and Truman and I love the fact that past characters pop into other series of all gives the reader the feeling of it being real characters and real places so much so I picture clearly eagles nest the cafe etc.
Without spoiling the ending let's just say a box of tissues was needed.
Kendra if your reading this please could you write more of the series.
