4.3 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Following their hearts could destroy the monarchy.

Headstrong Chloe dresses as a boy and runs away to her birth mother to escape a horrendous marriage. She’s shocked to discover that her parent owns a bawdy house, and is in no position to help- nor will she reveal the identity of Chloe’s father. When a street accident throws Chloe into the lap of the tempting Robert Mallory, he offers distraction and adventure, but his stubborn refusal to trust her endangers them both.

Hot-headed Robert Mallory is battling to protect his sister, his livelihood, and his honor. He’s a spy who can’t follow the rules and distrusts everyone, particularly the delectable young woman from the bordello. Having endangered her, then rescued her from a nest of traitors, he learns that Chloe is the natural daughter of the one man he can’t afford to upset, Sir Mortimer Fowler. Offering marriage to save Chloe’s reputation is out of the question, as Fowler needs her for bait in a deadly trap.

Robert is faced with an impossible choice. He’s desperate to save Chloe, but if he follows his heart, the security of the entire realm is at risk.

Note: This series is part of Dragonblade's Sweet Dreams line, so this is a sweet, wholesome Historical Romance where passion beyond the bedroom door is left to the reader’s imagination.

Elizabeth Keysian is a USA TODAY bestselling author of heart-pounding Regency romances, set mostly in the West of England. She has just completed a series for Dragonblade Publishing called Trysts and Treachery, which is set in the Tudor era. Though primarily a writer of romance, she loves to put a bit of mystery, adventure, and suspense into her stories, and refuses to let her characters take themselves too seriously.

Elizabeth likes to write from experience, not easy when her works range from the medieval to the Victorian eras. However, her passion for re-enactment has helped, as have the many years she spent working in museums and British archaeology. If you find some detail in her work you’ve never come across before, you can bet she either dug it up, quite literally, or found it on a museum shelf.

Trust Elizabeth to lead you down a garden path by star rise or waning moon eager to weave and wind along any exciting, convoluted and heart racing romantic pace or climes she stages. Rich in history and period details including peacocks and passion in such positions of power as Privy Council set amidst extremely perilous times during the intrigue and plotting of Sir Francis Walsingham ( c.1532 - 6 April 1590) whilst he was officially titled principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I of England from 20 December 1573 until the day of his death.
Thus agents, subterfuge, mistrust and uncertainties were rampant among the population with some knaves and cut-throats lurking in the fringes of London both in town and it's environs amidst Lords and Ladies and Innocents and Dukes where one misinterpreted gesture or remark may cast aspersions on your character unbeknownst to you yet remembered even as you are followed and regarded as a person of dubious motives whereas a look, gesture, trip of foot or tongue could cost you your very life. Should the knit and grit of daily life and love both it's trials and triumphs, characters, travelers and tellers of intrigue composers and writers of song, sonnets & tales pique your interest then Ms. Elizabeth Keysian places her mistrust in you.

Chloe Emmerson is desperate to escape the boring man she is expected to marry. When she discovers that she is not the orphan she was lead to believe she was, Chloe makes a desperate decision to find her birth mother and father.
Robert Malloy is a jaded man that has had his faith in people tested and tried. He trusts absolutely no one. When Robert stops to aid an injured young man on the street, his most prized possession is lost to him and he is determined to find the boy and dish out his punishment..only the young man turns out to be a most attractive young woman.
Falsely accused and horribly offended, Chloe is furious with the man that she finds terribly attractive. What is his story? Why can't she seem to shake this man that insists on being her shadow?
These two start off on a a bad footing and only time and many close calls with danger can set them straight.
Fun read with lots of twists and turns!

What may seem as a best laid plan, often finds danger along the way. Such was the case as Chloe set out to find her birth mother with the information she had found. Desperate to not marry the man her aunt and uncle had deemed appropriate, she found her mother was a brothel owner. Oh yes and her father was none other than a pier.

Fortunately or unfortunately as the case may be she found herself in the company of one Sir Robert. Her rescued her, then manhandled her and ended up traveling with her to London. But oh, there was some attraction there that could not be denied!

Mystery, spies, secrets and a journey to find answers, brings these two together in a story not soon forgotten! Elizabeth Keysian weaves another tale that wraps you in her imagination and does not let go until the end! Sit back and enjoy!

Mistress Chloe Emmerson is betrothed to Lord Brooke, which would not be a bad situation, except she cannot stand the man. She has been raised by her aunt and uncle; believing that her mother is dead. When she discovers that she is alive, she sneaks away from London to an address she found on letters her mother wrote to her aunt. To accomplish this feat, she dresses as a lad, and makes her way to Southampton. But she discovers her mother owns a brawly house and will not help her. Chloe meets a handsome stranger by the name of Sir Roger Mallory, who is on his own mission. This is the perfect setting for an adventure with dangerous occurrences, not knowing whom to trust and of course romance. This is a great read, and the pages keep you mesmerized in the characters and the adventure they find along the way.

This fast-paced romance, set in the Elizabethan era, has adventure, espionage, and humour. Chloe and Lord Robert were fated to meet and from the outset, there is a connection as even before Robert realises what or who Chloe is, he protects her. Given that young women of the era were strictly protected and chaperoned, it is a wonder that Chloe managed to escape her aunt and uncle, but she is strongly motivated by their choice of husband for her, who is abhorrent to Chloe. She accidentally discovers that she is not the orphan she has been led to believe and sets off to find her parents. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned but this leads her into Robert's arms. I loved the main characters in this book and although Robert is torn between his duty to his Queen and his deep feelings for Chloe, he is a gallant gentleman who comes to love and respect the courageous young woman who has fallen into his lap. Despite her youth and naivete, Chloe barrels through her adventure, little realising just how precarious it is. Nevertheless, she is resourceful and brave and manages to come through her escapades slightly the worse for wear but relatively unscathed. The story is well-written and has a good plot, one that kept my interest and had me laughing out loud at times. It is a standalone and comes to a happy and joy-filled conclusion. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Mistress Chloe Emmerson wants to avoid a possible betrothal to Lord Burke. She discovers letters her Aunt had hidden, and finds her real mother is not dead as she has been told. Chloe dresses up a boy and takes off to Southampton to find her mother.
Sir Robert Mallory is a spymaster for Walsingham who works for Queen Elizabeth.
Robert and Chloe are initially suspicious of each other. They actually end up saving each other over and over, and sparks fly between the two. There is definitely mystery and romance in this great story!

I live and breathe for books written by Elizabeth Keysian! I might be biased because she is one of my favourite authors and I know that before I even open one of her books that I am going to absolutely love it! As usual she holds true to my every expectation And I loved Lord of Mistrust! It really is a delightful read and I say delightful because of how captivating and fun the characters are in this story! I found myself chuckling quite a bit. Chloe is everything a heroine should be and Robert is quite the compelling hero. Though, not a terribly adept spy. Absolute must read! Highly recommend this book.

This was a good paced story with engaging characters. Chloe Emerson was certainly brave and determined. She set out by herself to find her mother, quite a dangerous undertaking, travelling from London to Southampton. She is also trying to escape from an unwanted suitor. When in Southampton, she is aided by Sir Roger Mallory, a handsome man, but someone who is on his own mission. The more time they spent together, the more they are attracted to each other. But can anything come of it, given Chloe’s suitor is still on the scene and Roger needs to fulfil his duties. Chloe’s mother is a force to be reckoned with but she is there for Chloe. There are some dangerous events, misunderstandings, spies and a happy ending. This was an entertaining read. I did receive a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. However, I did purchase my own copy.
