- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2016I was delighted when Jason Nugent offered me an advance review copy of his new book. I'd reviewed his previous collection, Almost Average, and loved it, a great introduction to his work, so I was keen to see more from him.
Moments of Darkness is a collection of 14 short stories - some flash fiction, some a little longer, but all of them a quick delve into different worlds.
I love the impish fun of Careful Study, with a grumpy alien with a grumbling stomach landing on a new planet. I really like the scritch scratch at your brain that is the insidious madness of Super Moon, with the protagonist becoming obsessed by lunar madness. The dark paranormal tale of With All My Love would fit neatly on a series of The Twilight Zone.
Some of the stories are little more than nuggets, vignettes with a twist, but that's flash fiction - I swear, a form I can never master myself, but I respect those who can be more succinct. As ever with a collection, there will be stories you favour over others, but Jason Nugent has a voice worth listening to.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2017Jason J. Nugent packs a collection of fourteen dark short stories crossing realms and worlds, encountering a cat with green shimmering eyes, animals whose blood smells delicious, fierce dragons missing eyes and scales, a boar white in color and red of eye, Zombie who eats flesh, muscle, and brains, a creature with green-gilled face, large yellow eyes and razor-sharp teeth, tall purple creatures with four arms and two legs, short red creatures that resembled cats without tales, giant humanoid creatures with greenish skin, etc.
Jason J. Nugent’s creative mind spins dark tales that churn and chill, with splashes of bloody red and hot, fiery red. You’ll be turning the pages to unexpected twists and endings.
Love, goodness, duty, honor, truth, and life shine among moments of darkness, evil, violence, betrayal, revenge, and death…giving pause for reflection of our own humanity, souls and existence.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved all the short stories in here. I especially liked the last one with a man who found a laser instrument and discovered a way to see events from the past. One of the first scenes was of these giant hand creatures that built the pyramids.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2017This collection of short stories has more than a few 'Moments of Darkness'. There is plenty of twists and turns to keep your heart racing. All of the stories are wonderfully creative and well recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2017great collections of short stores here!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2016This is the second collection of flash-fiction short stories written by a very talented author. The stories are short, so they need to get to the point quickly. I feel this takes a certain level of talent not normally found in a lot of authors. You need to engage the audience quickly, make them care, and finish the story leaving them satisfied. Jason Nugent is an author with this rare talent.
I very much enjoyed reading this collection. The collection starts with Cat Got Your Tongue? I found this story to be highly entertaining, ending with a nice twist I wasn’t expecting. The collection ends with The Arc Device, a story that tickles the ‘time-travelers’ fancy, without going too deep to cause confusion. These two stories are two of my favorites in a collection of fourteen shorts.
Now I can’t honestly say I liked them all, but everyone likes something different. Such is the way of collections. That being said, I would highly recommend this collection to anyone that likes Fantasy, Science Fiction and maybe even Horror. The stories will appeal to lovers of all these genre, and maybe even others.
Well done.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2018I met Jason Nugent at an Indie Author sale in St. Peters, MO just last year. We talked about his work and I bought Moments of Darkness. It was a joy to read. These stories would be better described as machine gun short stories. Some are very short, almost too short, but they are great. They all have great twists and turns throughout and I very much enjoyed the journey through this book. Being an indie author, I can appreciate the time it takes to condense an idea down to its most needed essence to convey the story in a manner that best fits the moment. Jason Nugent does just that and does it very well. Great Job Jason!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019Moments of Darkness by Jason J. Nugent is an amazingly entertaining book. While much flash fiction reads like it was truly rushed, Jason packs his with entertainment and an overall creepiness that permeates every genre he covers in this book. It's a solid read that delivers a punch in bite-sized pieces. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story themes.
14 flash & short stories covering a gamut of humorous horror and scary horror, this collection was really enjoyable reading. From a flesh-eating 'security' cat to an offer from the devil's son to the man who solved his own murder - and lots more.
