The Necromancer's Dance (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,921 ratings

The bestselling international hit begins with The Necromancer's Dance...

In a world where magic is real and evil walks amongst humanity, a young sorcerer is beset upon by enemies, both old and new.
Angelus Salvatore is the only necromancer in all of Boston, and his name is whispered warily by the undead and fellow sorcerers alike. He and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors of an attack by an army of the undead, in which Angel used a spell so powerful it forever marked his place in history.
Now, years later, Angel struggles to balance his career as a teacher of the higher magical arts, his role as big brother, and a tenuous relationship with an Elder vampire from the local clan. When his brother's boyfriend is used as a pawn in a mysterious plot to draw Angel out, Angel is once again drawn back into the old hostilities that fueled the Blood Wars and led to his family's death.
Leaning on others for help is something Angel cannot do, and while he searches for clues into who may be targeting him and his brother, Angel finds his heart steadily growing occupied with Simeon, Elder and vampire. Dealing with death magic and vampires on a daily basis may leave Angel jaded when it comes to life and staying that way, but the more time he spends fending off the ancient vampire's attention and affections, the more he realizes he wants to give in.

Can Angel find out who wants him dead, and keep his heart safe in the process? How can he fall for a vampire, when his whole family was torn apart by an army of the undead? Death stalks the streets of Boston's historic Beacon Hill....and there is no one more suited to battle against death than a necromancer.

4.5 stars. This is my second time reading this book, so I'm already coming at this review with a bias. The magic system, the setting, the characters, everything about this story is so fun and entertaining to read. From the very beginning we are gifted with Angel, our necromancer, who is incredibly powerful, capable, and will absolutely take no shizzle from anyone. He's a flare in the dark working against forces from past and present that don't want to see him succeed (or even live). In the midst of all this, he finds love with vampire Simeon and the two of them fit so well together. Fast-paced, this book doesn't let up and ends so perfectly with a set up for the next book in the series.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?
    Absolutely!

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: I adore Angel. He's my favorite human character (my official favorite character is Eroch, who only gets better and better throughout the series). Angel is tenacious, smart, incredibly determined, and protective of those he cares about, even when they don't give him the same in return. Ten years after losing his entire family except his brother (seven years his junior), he's still reeling from what happened, living as quiet a life as he can, when the world decides it won't be quiet for him anymore. And he fights back. It's impossible not to root for him. He's powerful and yet vulnerable and highly proactive. The perfect protagonist. Pair him with Simeon and we're set up for a deep bond that also ends up being a bundle of laughs and banter. I adore characters that can hold their own and Angel is one of the best. The side characters are just as fun (and that cast will grow as the series progresses). So worth it!

PLOT: Fast-paced, ten years after the Blood Wars that killed his entire family save his younger brother, Angel Salvatore is living a quiet life as a magical teacher in Boston's Beacon Hill. He's incredibly powerful and known for killing an entire army of vampires that day, a secret only he knows how he did it. As such, he's notorious both in the supernatural community and with the human community who have a bias against him (because they are allied with the losing side from that war). His quiet life is disrupted by a vampire intent on killing him and those close to him and with Simeon's help he takes on the challenge, refusing to back down or let this mysterious vampire live. All whilst navigating brand new and scary feelings that are very close to 'love' that he's having for Simeon.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

3:5/medium. Wonderfully entertaining with lots of action and high stakes.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

90%. I always wish for just a little bit more when it comes to the immediate aftermath. However, the end does wrap up everything book one set up and leaves us on our way to solve more mysteries with Angel and his ever-growing found (and biological) family.

I ve read this several times, and I've enjoyed it every time. The characters are wonderful, fully realized and complex in their attitudes and motives. They evolve and grow due to their experiences. Angel is like a barely contained fire, brilliant and quick to anger, he is impetuous but also plans. He doesn't know what love is for him, but he's willing to try. He has a lot of issues tied to his past, and an angry, grief ridden brother he has to protect. Simeon is a powerful Elder vampire. He's strong, thinks carefully before he acts and had seen 4 centuries pass. Hes blindside by his love from Angel, but is willing to wait until the night Angel kisses him. Then all betsvsre off and it's full steam forward. His devotion to Angel is as inspiring. The world is very well realised, the magical elements are interesting and not foolproof. It's not easy to increase magical power, and even when someone reaches the pinicle of ability it has many problems and shortcomings. It's balanced, even the most powerful have vulnerabilities. I think this make for a very real world, with difficult problems that have to be worked on. I ve read the whole series a couple of times, just enjoying the interplay of characters and magic. The books are fun, sometime deep and well paced, I strongly recommend.

    Wow.
This book really impressed me. I'm not usually big on paranormal romance, but I'll read it from time to time. This was one of those times I was glad I made an exception. Necromancer's Dance was so good I don't know where to start.

Angel is from a very old, very powerful family, filled with sorcerer's and other magical types. Only Angel and his brother, Isaac, remain alive after a vampire mob was compelled to destroy their entire family. As the only Necromancer in Boston, Angel holds a position of respect and power. I mean, if you can control the dead and live in a city of vampires, they're going to give you a wide berth. And Angel isn't afraid to let out of line vampires know how frightening he can be.

Simeon is a vampire Elder, one step down from the Master of the City. The big Irishman has had many run-ins with Angel over the last couple of years, usually ending with Simeon amused by the Necromancer's fiery personality. Simeon is hot as hell, tall, muscular, with dark red hair and covered in old Celtic tattoos. When he protects Angel and they become close, you have to fan yourself to get through the pages. Described as James Bond with an Irish accent and red hair, Angel has no chance at resisting his charms.

When someone in Boston has it in for Angel, and he finds Simeon, an unexpected ally, at his side.

The story is compelling, unique, and never boring. My only regret is that now I have to wait for book 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy story
Reviewed in Australia on September 17, 2018
This was a thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy romp, told through an exciting, fresh, and well-executed plot line, and featuring an intriguing cast of supernatural characters, all of whom I was captivated and delighted by.

The Necromancer's Dance tells the story of a powerful young sorcerer named Angelus ‘Angel’ Salvatore who lives in Boston and works as a teacher to young people learning to expand and control their magical abilities. As the only necromancer left in Boston, Angel is both revered and reviled by many within the supernatural community for the part he played ten years ago in ending the blood wars between his family and a coven of vampires – a battle which ended in a bloodbath, with only Angel and his younger brother Isaac left alive.

When this story begins, Angel is in a constant state of exhaustion having worked himself ragged teaching the magical arts by day and assisting members of the supernatural community with magic related problems by night. He’s got too much on his mystical plate, and not only does he close himself off from forming significant relationships with others, but his relationship with his younger brother is strained and uncertain.

To make matters worse, it seems someone is out to kill Angel when he is set upon by a demon who has been summoned from another dimension and is being controlled by an unknown third party. Seeing as the cops are as good as useless, Angel finds himself relying on the assistance of a trusted local vampire elder named Simeon, who is ready to help and who it seems is suddenly eager to put the moves on Angel after two years of respectful acquaintanceship, much to Angel’s equal delight and trepidation.

Simeon is not only devastatingly gorgeous and charming, but he’s also powerful and well-respected in the supernatural community of Boston, proving to be both a great ally in Angel’s corner and a hazard to his hesitant heart. Together they must seek out and face down the pressing threat to Angel’s life, all while their undeniable connection grows too strong for Angel to resist.

I loved Angel and Simeon together. It seems that redheaded Irish vampires just do it for me. Simeon was seriously one dreamy ass vamp MC. I went positively gaga over this guy. His passion and adoration for Angel was just wonderful to witness, especially when it was revealed that he’d been holding himself back for years while he waited patiently for Angel to be ready for his significant advances. In the end, Angel barely fights his feelings for Simeon, knowing that what he feels for the vampire may seem wrong (given his past) but is so very right. Their relationship progression was fairly quick, but given their backstory I was okay with the pace and swiftness of all the romance and passion. In fact, this story had next to no relationship angst and I really appreciated that – it worked perfectly within this setting and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.

The mystery/suspense element of this story kept me intrigued too, with lots of twists and turns right up until the exciting final showdown.

Needless to say, I enjoyed the hell out of this one and I look forward to continuing on with the supernatural adventures of Angel, Simeon, and their friends and family.

I loved this book from start to finish! It gave me everything I could possibly ask for; supernatural romance, interesting characters, great world-building, plenty of action and a hint of mystery. I loved how things developed between Angel and Simeon. In many ways they were perfect for each other and their chemistry was fantastic- I enjoyed seeing Angel learn to trust and recognise just how much Simeon has shown his care over the two years they've known each other. I liked how protective Simeon was but that Angel was also more than capable of defending himself when it called for it. If you like paranormal MM romance then I'd definitely recommend this book!

Reviewed in Brazil on December 9, 2021
It has been some time since I last got so excited with a story and this was it! It's quite a creative and highly interesting story (at least for me) with lots of detailed descriptions of spells, creatures, situations and even feelings but without being boring which is quite a feat. In the midst of all the things happening Angel and Simeon's romance was adictive to me and I can't wait to read the next book.
This is recommended to all those who love some adventure with a touch of interesting (and hot *wink*) situations, an old as dirt powerful vampire head over heels for his mate and a sorcerer full of freaking strong magic and amazing snarky attitude.
