Great story telling. Drew me in as if I were there except when the unnecessary and over use of the “F word” threw me out and required a reset to get back in. Would have definitely given this book a 5, no 10 star review had the “f word” been omitted. Other great authors refrain and write terrific books, so should this great author.

This is the story of Commander Roslyn Chambers now teaching at the Tau Ceti Naval Academy when the attempted kidnapping of the Mage-Queen of Mars happened (see The Mage-Queen's Thief prequel to this book).

The resulting consequences of that event leads Damien Montgomery, Prince-Chancellor of the Protectorate of Mars to retake up being a Mars Hand to determine who and why that event happened.

As one might expect a lot of gut-wrenching, dramatic page turning action scenes then takes place.

I love this author's characterization and his style of interesting, realistic dialog, which makes reading his stories so entertaining - enjoy.

Roslyn and Damien are once again in the middle of plots, violence, mind controlled humans, mass murders and the theft of new naval interstellar ships. Nemesis is determined to steal or destroy the best of the Protectorate to get what he needs to fight the Reejit. As usual, Roslyn finds herself in the middle of the action but also has Damien running the operation. This is one of the fast-paced books in the series, but the author continues to include many details about magic, interstellar travel and how the ships fight and function.

With a huge bonus of Damien Montgomery!

I really, REALLY enjoyed this book. Lucky number 13? Glynn did a great job of balancing between Roslyn and Damien's POVs, giving me enough of both of my favorite characters.

The plot was fresh but still made sense with all the prior plot lines. There is enough left to untangle for (I hope) many more books, without it feeling like the whole overarching plot is drawn out (it takes time to end a centuries old secret society after all). Some develoments with Roslyn are exciting, and it's nice to see Damien in the field again.

I also love that this is not a romance based series, even though there is some (and it doesn't feel forced). It's just a truly great sci-fi mystery and action series! I love it and am already ready for the next.

I am a "proofreader" for Glynn so I do get a copy of the book ahead of time, but frankly that just makes me super lucky because I'm a huge fan of this series (and was BEFORE being a typo hunter)!

Very good continuation of the tale. Getting down to the final stages of dealing with the fanatical Nemesis. And finding that the end game comes with loss. Nice to have Damien back on the front lines again. Kiera is evolving into a woman just as fiery as her hair. Love the interactions between her and Damien. Looking forward to the next story in the sequence. Finale? Probably not because after Nemesis comes Reejit and the expectation that they won't be playing nice.

When you truly enjoy returning to a series this far along, you should oughtta leave a review, not just a rating. Still looking forward to more and finding a new volume release makes me smile. I never have to check earlier volumes or wish for a recap. I remember the storyline from the beginning and the characters are actually memorable. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story. I will buy and give 5 star while you write, but…

For the love of…. Please stop using an exclamation as a full stop! Every time you do, it changes the tone of what you’re saying! It becomes really trying! And the end of each sentence, the tone of the whole paragraph changes! I think there are likely 5-10 per page! If as you read this, your internal voice went up at the end of each statement , you can imagine how annoying it is reading a whole book full of them! A lot of the points could be made with a more subtle… with a leading statement terminates with… rather than and over excited! Over exaggerated! Exclamation! Mark!

So, I will stick to my evaluation. I love storytelling and the worldbuilding. Although I think there is a Chekov gun on the mantle at the start of the book, and it has not fired yet. I hope it will fire later in the 6eries, and the payback will be even more rewarding.
But, and that's a big but worth a star, I am tired of the protagonist chuckling and snorting during the dialogues. I have counted 26 of them, sometimes twice on the same page! And out of those 26, only one was satisfying. The other one could have been replaced or dropped. We know Damien at this stage. We know what tickles his sense of humor, let us deduce that he chuckles or produces an amused rectus from the dialogue.

Each time I return to the Protectorate of Mars, it’s like stepping onto a starship bridge and finding the crew waiting for me. Waiting to go adventuring,

This time our trip into the black holds an adventure for both Damian and Roslyn as she finally gets a ship of her own. One that’s sure to bring her many more adventures as she settles into her new rank.

I am fully onboard for that.

Perhaps my favorite science/fantasy series of all time. Solid characters and a scale that makes sense. The fact that the "dashing rogue saves the princess" story was the throwaway line in the prologue really set the tone.
