Never Say Never: : A Rivals to Lovers, Fake Dating Rom-Com (The Ladies Who Brunch Book 1) Kindle Edition
When those words left the lips of Damien Shaw, my childhood nemesis, I should have told him to kick rocks right then and there.
But sadly, his scheme to impress his boss left me with something to gain from it too—getting my meddling mother, who was obsessed with my love life, off my back just in time for my parents’ thirtieth wedding anniversary celebration in Hawaii.
You see, Damien and I grew up together, but we weren’t friends. No—we were rivals.
And when we both moved out to California to go to different colleges, we promised never to think of each other again.
It had been twelve years since we had been face to face, but when he kept popping up everywhere, I should have known that trouble would follow.
And sure enough, during a lunch with my parents he told them we were dating.
I was hellbent on exposing him, but then my mother’s reaction made it hard to say no. So, I ended up fake dating my enemy while trying desperately not to fall for him.
My gut told me to keep my distance. But my heart? That bastard was falling for the man with every sweet gesture he made and every orgasm he gave me.
But when the reason for our rivalry and our fake relationship comes to light, everyone and everything explodes, leaving one hell of a mess to clean up.
I never thought I’d fall for Damien Shaw. I never thought my enemy could force me to figure out my life. But you know what they say—never say never.

The Ladies Who Brunch, Book 1
By: Harlow James
Narrated by: Teddy Hamilton, Samantha Brentmoor
This is an amazing start to “The Ladies Who Brunch” series, a fantastic romantic comedy, a fake relationship between two childhood nemesis who meet again over a decade later. I am not sure how this is my first Harlow James book, I only know she has my attention now. I enjoyed her writing style, the characters and storylines she created are interesting and original, and the story captivated my attention from start to end. Each book in the series will feature a different lady who brunches, and this first is Charlotte and Damien Shaw’s story. The ladies who brunch are a tight-knit group of friends who have each other’s back and meet weekly to catch up. I loved the camaraderie amongst them, and the back-and-forth banter between them, and I am looking forward to hearing each of their stories and their fun times at future brunch gatherings. Charlotte’s mother is a piece of work, instead of praising her daughter for all her accomplishments, she is critical and more concerned about her appearance and finding someone to marry. She was out grabbing lunch when she sees him, her rival from growing up, Damien. Both their parents were friends, and she got stuck hanging with him often and he always gave her a hard time. She ducks out unseen, or so she thought. Damian is looking to advance in his career, but when he did not get picked to work on a campaign because it was for women’s products he made a pitch to his boss, who reminded him he does not have enough familiarity with women, since he is only a player. Damien blurts out that he has a girlfriend, someone he knew when he was younger. His boss not only gives him a go ahead for the project, but invites him and his girlfriend to a party at his house. Oh boy, now he needs to find a girlfriend, and when he sees Charlotte, who he hasn’t seen in years, he comes up with a plan. The only thing he needed to do was to get her on board, which was not all that difficult, because they were both going to her parent’s anniversary celebration, and if she had a boyfriend, it would keep her mother off of her back. Except not all goes as planned, but the going is great for the two of them until it is not, and her mother was not the only difficult parent, since his father was no bargain either. I loved all the layers of this story, the complexity of the characters and how everything played out, the world building is fantastic, and there is never a dull moment and the story has the perfect balance of drama, a touch of angst, witty dialogue and humor, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Harlow James, thank you for this fabulous story, the laughs and the emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and do so with a complete understanding of who they portraying. I loved how they take each role and make it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. You could hear how much heart they put into their performance as they capture all the characters’ emotion and have you feeling each one. Their talent knows no bounds and their performance elevates this already fantastic story to another level. They set the perfect tone for the story, handled the witty dialogue with ease, landing the humor effortlessly. These two make a great team, their voices complement each other and both are a pleasure to listen to.

keeps you engaged and wanting to know what is going to happen next. I love the story between enemies and lovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChildhood friends, Charlotte and Damien have a complicated past. They spent years pitted against each other to the point where they drove each other crazy. Despite their parents being close friends, it seems like all their accomplishments have boiled down to the overwhelming desire to one up the other. At the end of high school they part ways with a bitter vow to never think of each other again. Before they know it 12 years have gone by and in a twist of fate they cross paths again in a salad shop.
Damien is trying everything in his power to achieve the advertising promotion he desires. When the opportunity to impress his boss is dangled in front of him, he surprises himself with the lies that fall out of his mouth. His boss eats his lies up, and gives Damien a chance at the project. Which wouldn’t be a big deal, if it didn’t mean that he needs to find a (fake) serious girlfriend, like, yesterday.
Charlotte has her parents vow renewal coming up, and her mom has been pushing all her buttons. Every phone call has been, “You need to find a man,” and “Are you sure you want to eat that?” Her relationship with her mother leaves a lot to be desired, but she’s not ready to stand up to her constant pestering. So when irritating Damien falls back into her life with a crazy proposal to fake date, she decides maybe this isn’t such a bad plan (After laughing in his face of course).
The two rivals team up, with intentions of keeping their deceit perfectly platonic and mutually beneficial. That is until someone suggests that they use each other to scratch an itch. Before they know it, the lies have piled up and their fake relationship has gotten far more complicated than they bargained for.
This book so so endearing. It hits some tough topics, but handles them nicely. There are themes of forgiveness, found family, and finding support systems especially when dealing with and overcoming toxic parents. Throughout the book the rivals turned lovers discover just how similar they are as adults.
The amount of girl power was just heartwarming. There were countless times that I found myself getting emotional. It’s refreshing to see such strong female characters. The group of friends is so very real. They laugh, they cry, they fight. But at the end of the day they’re always there for each other. Even when Charlotte had some character development to do, it was a wonderful moment watching her grow. More importantly it’s was refreshing to see the male characters really take what the women said to heart. We love when men listen and learn!!!
There were some communication issues, but they weren’t enough to drive me crazy. The storyline was just really cute, and they worked through their issues in a way that I felt was important to their growth. I loved this book so much and was so eager to binge the next one in the series.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was such a fun book! Charlotte Montgomery and Damien Shaw were the epitome of childhood rivals, and then they went off to college with the plan of never thinking of the other again. Fate has other plans for them, as their paths cross many years later at the most opportune time. Each of them is in a situation to need a fake relationship, and so they fall into an agreement to help the other out.
I loved how Charlotte and Damien's relationship grew over time, and Damien really was the sweet caretaker. The tension and chemistry and banter between the two made it all the better. Samantha Brentmoor & Teddy Hamilton did such a wonderful job with the audio and bringing Charlotte and Damien and their friends and family to life. They nailed the humor and definitely had me laughing out loud a few times.
All I can say is both of their families are a piece of work. Charlotte's mom definitely set me off a few times, which definitely had me empathizing with Charlotte all the more. Despite the messy families, I loved that the strength of the friendships between Charlotte and her girlfriends came through in the story. They are such a fun group, and I'd brunch with them any time! I can't wait to see what's in store for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Enemies to Lovers turned Fake Dating and it made my heart go squish!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBook 1 of a series that I was super excited to dive into. It totally delivered and I can't wait to devour the rest of them.
Charlotte and Damien were rivals as kids, everything was a competition to see who was better, smarter, going to bigger and better places, and now as adults, they come together for fairly selfish reasons. An I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine situation of fake dating. Damien opens his big mouth and lies to his boss and now needs a girlfriend so he can get ahead at work so when he crosses paths with Charlotte 12 years after they swore to never see each other again... AND!!! It turns out she needs a fake boyfriend just as much as he does so she can get some breathing room from her busybody mother (Charlotte really needs to learn how to set boundaries and Damien helps with that).
They both come out the other side perfectly matched for each other, healing old wounds, finding new footing towards healthier emotional futures and very very much in love. And even when they are happy together (before the shoe drop and after) the banter and one-up-manship is top tier. The tension that simmers under the surface of enemies to lovers was 100% present with this pairing and I was completely there for it.
I loved their journey!! I kind of disliked Damien when I met him in his first POV chapter, but as they spent time together, he grew on me. He stood up for Charlotte, took care of her (in more than just the bedroom... *wink*) and in the end he was a very different guy than first impressions. Charlotte needed someone in her corner (other than her amazing friend group) and Damien became 100% team Charlotte and went out of his way to learn what she needed from her person because he wanted to be that person... and my heart went squish!!!!
The audiobook was performed by Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton. These 2 are amazing talents that I will never say no to listening to. They both bring so much emotion and range to the performances. They made me laugh and made me rage on their behalf, they made me talk back to the book (which is both the power of the performance and of the story they brought to life). In the end I found myself crying listening to a demonstration of the growth of these characters... I loved every moment.
I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love the fact that the book talks about the importance of mental health and the relationships with members of the family.
As well the fact that it has the insights of the challenges and patriarchy women are submitted to professionally and social expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Swoony, sexy and fun!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEven though I’m very new to Harlow James stories, the one thing that I already know is that I absolutely love her storytelling. From the characters to the plot and the friendships, it’s all so wonderful. And with the first in her new series, that feeling is no different. Never Say Never is a rivals to lovers, fake dating romance that takes the steam up a couple of notches all while still delivering some pretty strong topics of discussion. And I love that Harlow didn’t hold back, because romance is such a great genre for the simple reason that you can have the sweetest, steamiest book, but there’s always going to be a strong storyline that runs through it. And in this one, it was pretty intense (in all the good ways, of course)!
From a young age, Charlotte Montgomery and Damien Shaw have been competing to be the best at literally everything. They would challenge each other to do better when it came to tests and any other activities that required a winner. So much so that both of them even ended up at each other’s school of choice almost to prove a point. And in the 12 years they haven’t seen each other, they’ve both lived in LA and worked in offices close to each other, but never crossed paths. When a passing glance at a cafe leads them back into each other’s lives, the last thing Charlotte expected happens.
I am a sucker for fake dating and I often don’t care what the reason is (as long as it’s not really super shady), I just want these two strangers or people who dislike each other to pretend to give a s**t about the other person just once. And in Charlotte and Damien’s case, I knew I was in for a wild ride with their rivalry and their obvious long-lasting dislike for each other. The banter was quick and funny, it really set the tone of their entire relationship. And I really enjoyed watching them figure out what was really going on with the other person throughout the entire story. Damien needs a girlfriend to show his boss that he’s the right person for a specific job and promotion, while Charlotte needs a boyfriend to get her overbearing mother off her back. And it works out for them really well.
Their relationship was definitely fun to watch unfold and it was hot in all the right ways, but I wasn’t as invested in their relationship as I thought I would be. These characters were brilliant individually and as a ‘fake couple’, but I didn’t entirely feel the realness (so to speak) in their relationship. However, Charlotte is such a great character. I love that she’s already got this important job and is recognised for her great work. I love that she’s got this incredible group of friends (who I’ll come to in a minute) and they lean on each other often. I love that Charlotte stands her ground and lives her life the way she sees fit, ignoring everyone and everything else around her. And then there’s Damien. He’s got all the makings of a typical playboy, but there’s so much more to him. I loved his relationship with his mother and the way he is with Jeffrey. I really liked how hard he worked to prove that he was worthy of something, especially at work. Damien was definitely swoony and charming, and there’s no doubt that he got me all excited for what their fake relationship was going to be.
As is the case with Harlow’s books, this one was STEAMY! I loved the sexual tension, the frustrations turning into lust (can we say lustrations?) and the build up. But I definitely enjoyed all of the steamy scenes because she definitely took it up a notch and I have zero issues with that.
I am SO EXCITED for the other Ladies Who Brunch, because this is such a great group of friends. From the first scene where we meet them, right till the end, I was captivated by these women. Their jobs, their distinct personalities and just everything that comes with their friendship. I am so ready for more! I absolutely and completely hated their families, though. Charlotte’s mother gave me flashbacks to what my grandmother put me through for a few years (rest her soul), but she was so difficult and unbearable. And don’t even get me started on Damien’s father. I do love that the villains of the story weren’t exes or random strangers, but people they’ve known their whole lives, because you learn so much more about the leads that way.
All in all, I would never say never when it comes to a Harlow James book and if you like witty banter, wiiiiide open steamy scenes and rivals to lovers, then this one is definitely for you!
