Read the novel voted Science Fiction Book of the Year*, now in development for film. Nomad is the first book in a new four-part epic from million-copy bestseller Matthew Mather.
Humanity only has days to prepare. Can one family survive?
SOMETHING MASSIVE IS COMING, and it's heading for Earth. That's what astronomer Ben Rollins is told by NASA after being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night. His first instinct is to call his daughter, Jessica, who's vacationing in Italy with his wife.
“It's a hundred times bigger than the sun,” Ben tells them. “Somehow we can't see it yet, and we don't know what it is, but they're calling it Nomad--and in just months,
the Earth may be destroyed.”
But how did they miss detecting it until now?
The world erupts into chaos as the end approaches, and Ben discovers his wife and daughter are trapped in Europe.
The key to Nomad's mystery--and humanity's ultimate survival--rests in the answers Ben pieces together from his old Cold War-era research papers, in the midst of a desperate scramble across continents to find his family before Nomad swallows the planet.
A Coming Apocalypse…
A Mystery from Deep Space…
An Epic Adventure Thriller…

Intriguing, and could happen...
Matthew Mather Nomad I read your book Mr. Mather, Cyberstorm, awhile back and was very impressed. When I read Nomad I was also very impressed. It is a wonderful story line to build characters on. Imagine, knowing a huge objected was hurtling toward Earth and we’ll probably be toast. I think you did a fine job of depicting the diverse situations that would unfold on the world stage if something like this happened, and in the character’s lives and interactions. Your characters were deep, and the emotions they evoked were gripping, as was in Cyberstorm. I really enjoyed the book, and was glad it ended the way it did. Very good subplots that supported the characters and their reactions and actions regarding the events. I learned a lot as a writer from your writing as well. I also noted the coincidence of your story, and the recent discoveries in astronomy, as you mentioned in a comment you made. That kind of gave me a tingly feeling, as I’m sure it did you. In fact, this will most probably happen someday, be it a neutron star, a black hole, or another type of space object. I enjoy your work, Sir. I will read more. G. F. This is a review of Nomad and it's sequel Sanctuary. Nomad starts off fairly slowly with the build up to the coming astronomical disaster and the typical government-military-industrial-complex cover up to keep the disaster secret while preparing sanctuary to insure survival of the few. Inter-chapter flash forwards let the reader know that she S will HTF. As the disaster approaches the story focuses on the heroine and a small group of potential survivors and the pace picks up. There are hints of revelations of the cover up and multiple, overlapping, groups of good/bad guys both opposing our potential survivors or helping them behind the scenes. There are captures, escapes, remarkable coincidences, mini-disasters, deaths (both in the millions and within the focused group of survivors). The Big One occurs and (some of) the bad guys are exposed and eliminated. Sanctuary picks up in the aftermath of the disaster when the group of survivors decides that their current situation is untenable and they must travel across the devastated landscape both for their own survival, to clear their names, and deliver a backpack full of scientific data which may or may not save the future of civilization if or when civilization is rebuilt. Besides harsh conditions and random acts of human savagery, they are also being tracked, hunted, or maybe aided by the nefarious competing groups of multinational conspirators who want our survivors dead, or alive and exploited, or simply want the data they are carrying. It's not all dark, there are lighter moments and acts of human kindness amidst the devastation.

I really liked the story. Nomad spent considerable time explaining the scientific basis of the astronomical disaster, while Sanctuary focused more on the small group human reactions to it. All the while the action continues at a good pace. The main characters are well developed, and the heroine, although she has self doubts, steps up to be the true leader (although one would expect no less of a Marine - Semper Fi Jess). I think the only thing that keeps me from giving these books five stars is that the main characters' escapes from capture and death, and the "coincidences" that occur seem to be too much.

Both Nomad and Sanctuary end satisfactorily without mid-action cliff hangers, but still leaving room for sequels. Buy these books and be prepared to have difficulty putting them down. I am waiting for a third sequel.

Not really feeling this story and a little miffed at why the handicapped female veteran is only character regularly beaten, robbed and mistreated by author!

A very interesting and technical story line starting in Rome Italy about an astrophysicist, Ben Rollins, being called in to help other astrophysicists, astronomers and scientist to help identify and track an unidentified object approaching our solar system. The object, which they had named Nomad, was not visible because it is approaching from the other side of the sun. But apparently it is very large and moving very fast and is just beginning to perturb the orbits of the outer planets. This is scenario number one.

Many authors use the technique of multiple seemingly unrelated scenarios occurring simultaneously to introduce the characters in the story and the author, Matthew Mather, does the same here. Chapter two introduces the characters in scenario two who are a mother and daughter, Celeste and Jessica, enjoying a tour of a Tuscany Italy castle and grounds.

I don’t want to give away the plot or compromise the story line, but the two scenarios continue where the characters are identified as husband, wife and daughter and they try to get together before the anticipated end of the world occurs.

There are many twist and turns in the story where husband Ben Rollins and wife and daughter, Celeste and Jess, try to get back together. Both parties run into many obstacles that hamper their progress, but they always persevere and then move on to the next obstacle.

There are many other characters introduced into the plot that initially are portrayed in one light but are later shown to be someone else with an entirely differently motive. (Toward the end, the story keeps you a bit off balance with the shift in character motives and character objectives.) I guess that this is all part of trying to be a good story teller. But with a 76 year old reader, it is a little hard sometimes to keep up with who are the good guys.

Jess ends up being the hero of the story by defeating the bad guys. Jess has background of service in the Marines, astronomy and mountain climbing. And she does this even though her left leg has been amputated below the knee. This book is science fiction but it is still difficult to picture her defeating so many able bodied men to save her family etc.

I gave this book a five rating because of the technical details and the good story line. I particularly liked the author’s notes at the end inviting the reader to a link as to where he got the data, via a software simulation program, to support his technical descriptions. My suggestion is that you read the story first and then look at the software simulation.

I actually stumbled on this book while playing the fiction part of Universe Sandbox ².
I'm usually not much of a reader but found the idea so interesting that I had to get the book.
I read through it in the stretch of a few days and now I can't wait for the next part.

Is this the end of the world or will mankind survive in sufficient numbers to recover and rebuild. The science behind this story is pretty gripping, drawing the reader in, making them question how they would feel and behave. Would they even want to know.
Domesday hurtles towards them and only a few know what that reality could be. Earth could be totally destroyed or any survivors could be subject to unknown horrors, a true fate worse than death.
Astronomer Ben Rollins gets drawn into tracking the unseen, 'the Nomad', working to narrow down the horrors that await. His daughter Jessica gets drawn into the scientific maze. Will Ben find a way to save humanity, even a small number of individuals, or will all his efforts prove worthless.
I really enjoyed this book. The narrative was compelling and the characters drew me into their world.
I look forward to the follow-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A post apocalypse book, but with good science
Reviewed in India on April 12, 2016
This is the beginning of what is not called as the apocalypse genre. But here the apocalypse is based on something very scientific.
The author uses the voyager anamoly, a little known (at least I had not heard of it before) space trivia. The voyager spacecrafts accelerated being the solar system for reasons not completely understood. The author has used this as the basis of his book and has explained various theories and the physics behind it succinctly. A great read.
I am yet to begin the second book. Probably it will have less physics and more human relationship thing. But I loved the first part thoroughly.
