Nothing Special Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 332 ratings

When Noah’s insecurity threatens their fledgling relationship, can Sol convince Noah that he’s enough?

Noah thinks he’s nothing special. Average height, a bit on the skinny side, and cute but rather geeky, he’s relentlessly ordinary. He certainly doesn’t expect to be noticed by Sol, the gorgeous dark-haired stranger Noah usually sees on his commute home.

When a friend persuades Noah to take a big risk in a bid to get Sol’s attention, things turn out better than Noah dared to hope. But Noah doesn’t believe he’s interesting or sexy enough to hold Sol’s attention.

As Sol tries to get closer, Noah tries to protect his heart by pulling away. If their relationship is going to survive, Noah needs to accept that Sol sees him very differently to how Noah sees himself. Because to Sol, Noah is something very special indeed.

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England. He comes from a family of writers, but always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed him by. He spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content.

One day, Jay decided to try and write a short story—just to see if he could—and found it rather addictive. He hasn't stopped writing since.

Jay writes contemporary romance about men who fall in love with other men. Jay has five books published by Dreamspinner Press, and he also self-publishes under the imprint Jaybird Press.

Jay is transgender and was formerly known as she/her.

It was weird when I looked at the number this book made in my 'read' section: 500. Kind of an anniversary/special occasion of sorts. Ironically it is also a key point in "Nothing Special." Ms. Northcote has succeeded since her debut in becoming one of my favorite authors in the M/M genre. She never promises anything she doesn't deliver and 'Nothing Special' is no change.

Since she is an auto buy for me, I had the book a few days before I got to read it due to a long week at work with long commutes, another topic that is of importance in her new offering. I did get to read some interviews she did about the book and she promised a light, easy, read, without much angst. Again, she delivered in spades. Northcote has the knack of writing characters you really want to meet. Sol and Noah fit this description as do Dom (who I would love to hear more from,) the housemates, and families.

This is a cute story that can really hit home with anyone who has ever felt like 'Nothing Special' which I think pretty much includes all of us at one point. This is a great point that is sometimes missed in M/M with both guys being GQ hot. I loved Sal's speech at the end about how one person can see another person. I have always been a fan of this author's work, but this work actually has improved on past offerings when talking about true emotion and what love actually is. Also, I have to compliment the epilogue. I didn't see it coming and I actually sat on the couch reading it smiling to myself....and that is just fine.

Jay Northcote is my go-to author for MM romance. He normally creates characters and situations that are realistic and believable with the all important emotional relationship. However, I was disappointed with this one. After reading the blurb, I was expecting Noah to have low self-esteem issues that would affect his new relationship. This did not happen. Noah only says that he is ordinary and nothing special. We are not SHOWN this. In fact, this is never an issue until after 60% of the book when Sol asks him about moving in with him. And even then, it was a weak position. Showing the readers on page how the way he viewed himself affected his relationship would added much to the story. Other things that I didn't like include: They slept together on the first date and every night for the next 2 weeks after that, the first weeks of dating took up 60% of the book with the characters just, going to work, drinking coffee, meeting on the train and sleeping together in hot weather. Seriously. For me, this story lacked the emotional depth that I have become used to when reading Jay's books. The sex scenes seemed to be just that. Sex. No trust, no bonding. Just two horny guys getting it on as often as possible.

On the plus side, there are minimal curse words and it is written in third person POV. The way that they communicated with each other through the newspaper at the beginning and at the end was sweet too.

This was just what the doctor ordered. A sweet boy meets boy story without too much angst. Yes there was a bump in the road. That is to be expected in the m/m genre. But no one got gay bashed. Both young men have supportive parents and great friends. They have a great whirlwind romance and live happily ever after. Well written with likable characters throughout. Summer's not over so it isn't too late for this to be a great beach read. It would also make a good commuter train read since much of the action takes place on a commuter train. Let yourself relax into this one and enjoy.

Sweet short read with little angst and lots of lovin! Sol and Noah were meant to be from the beginning, then just needed a couple of pushes to get there.

I gave this book a five-star rating because I believe this is a very special romance story about a quirky guy who needed a boost to his ego and a young man who didn't mind boosting that ego. Highly recommend you put this on your tbr list - you're going to love these characters and their journey. I know I did!

Noah sees a cute guy on the train each day but can’t bring himself to talk to him because Noah views himself as “nothing special”. This was another thoughtful story by Jay Northcote and exactly what I want from romance. The book explores Noah’s insecurities, low self-esteem, and the feelings of inadequacy when you go out with someone much better looking. This was entirely Noah’s journey as he learns to trust that Sol finds him worth loving. As usual, Jay details the small intimacies that make up a relationship and I found myself smiling with pleasure at many of the tender moments. Matthew Lloyd Davies narrates lightly, supporting the gently fun and compassionate tone of the book.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful boy-boy romance

The romance proceeds from the two characters having only their coursework in common to fully declaring their love for each other. In between there are bad periods of doubt and jealously with concomitant sadness. A happy -ever-after story which is always a comfort to read.

So far I've enjoyed all books by Jay Northcote and I think this one might even be my new favorite.
It's such a sweet and light story with great characters and no major drama or angst.
I found myself smiling through most of the book because Noah and Sol are such adorable, sweet and lovely characters. I could totally relate to Noah and his insecurities of feeling like he's nothing special. And loved the way Sol showed him that he was something special to him.
I have to mention, that I really liked the idea of putting an advert in the paper as a way of letting someone know you're interested.
And really enjoyed to see the relationship grow between Noah and Sol.

This book made me smile, it made me cry and laugh, and it definitely made me swoon! I'm sure I'll re-read it again and again.
So, I absolutely recommend this book to everyone who's looking for something light and fluffy.
