Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.

An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.

Married to her high school crush who is now a retired US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.

She is the author of The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project Superhero Universe, the Award Winning (2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction) Nyssa Glass Steampunk series, and MG/Fantasy "Cora and the Nurse Dragon," among others.

I adored this short story! But then, I am a fan of the Nyssa Glass series and of author H.L. Burke. It is typically steampunk, and filled with plenty of gadgetry, adventure, Victorian clothes, and a tough heroine. There was so much to love about this story! From Nyssa’s and Ellis’s adorable awkward romance, to the adventure of Nyssa’s thief life, to life aboard the ship, and the imagination of what their paradise destination will look like, and the light thrilling caper of the Dragon Heart ruby, against the typical moustache-twirling villain and his thug (reminded me of the old-fashioned movies). I love that Nyssa isn’t the standard boring tough chick. She is tough, yes, but she’s unrefined, quiet, afraid of heights, really unsure of her emotions, and insecure of her place in life. All those together make her a more-likable and more-relatable heroine. (She reminds me Selina Kyle in Gotham and Nyssa from Doctor Who). Ellis, too, has a lot of insecurities, mostly stemming from his handicap, which makes the heart really reach out for him as well as admire him for his stubbornness for overcoming his obstacles, and I also love his steadfast optimism. In all, this is a delightful read and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Another dashing adventure as Nyssa attempts to flee a false accusation of murder along with her new friend Ellis, who has his own reasons for leaving. A pair of upper-crust runaways, though, take their forged papers at gunpoint before they can get off the ground. Trouble is, when Nyssa and Ellis catch up with the would-be Romeo and Juliet after stowing away in the zeppelin, their problems only mount. The pair is hiding something, and Nyssa and Ellis aren’t alone in seeking them. Quick thinking, and their unusual talents, are all the two can count on as Nyssa and Ellis struggle to survive long enough to embark on a new life together.

The above is my version of the blurb. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll say only their fate ends up entwined with perhaps the most frustrating and self-centered couple in existence. This steampunk tale has everything you’d expect: a zeppelin and daring aerial acrobatics, an aristocrat or two caring little for those lower on the social scale, and a melodramatic edge to the runaways that defies all logic and sensibility.

Nyssa and Ellis could have fought for a legitimate life after the first book, but the risks were still there between Nyssa being framed for murder and people wanting to lay claim to Ellis’ father’s work. I am not surprised to find them planning to leave for good. It’s where things start to go bad only a few pages in that makes this a Nyssa Glass story. She has a bullseye printed on her back for all she intends to leave her past behind.

While Nyssa is much the same in this book, Ellis plays a different role, as does his handicap. I like how his limitations were not brushed aside but rather integrated into the story. In the first book, he was isolated in his father’s home. In this one, he is out in the world. We learn both how people react to him and how he interacts with strangers and those known to him.

I enjoy the main characters and find the overblown drama of the secondary characters amusing, but it’s the intricate puzzles that draw me the most. Between the two of them, Nyssa and Ellis have a remarkable set of skills. Figuring out what each situation calls for is the hard part. Nor do they always succeed, leaving me feeling the tension until I see proof of success.

The characters and story stick with me in the way only good books do, offering an entertaining steampunk romp with airships and scoundrels for the enjoyment of all.

Burke's done it again. The only problem I had is that this one waas shorter that "Nyssa Glass and the House of Mirrors," and i want a Nyssa story that will take me longer than 2 -3 days to read! This one came out on Father's Day in the states and was the perfect gift to myself - I'd been waiting to hear of its release for weeks. I was NOT disappointed. Mrs. Burke is an incredible storyteller, but like Stephen King, when she is writing about the human condition her prose knows few equals. Not to give anything away but there is a beautiful scene at the end of the story between Nysaa and Ellis in whhic they discuss what love is...and it only sweetens the scenes that follow. Like the "House of Mirrors," Burke went for a deeper meaning, deeper thoughts, a serious take on life through the eyes of these to and she found it, big time.

I loved Nysssa from page 1 of book 1 and "The Juliet Dilema" did NOTHING but strengthen that love. The characters are so well fleshed out I can all but feel them sitting beside me as I read, and the gentle ease of Burke's writing pushes the story ahead at a breakneck pace. It's not that it's an easy read with simple words; it's just that H.L. knows how to turn a phrase, use the language to paint beautiful pictures. She's also a master of the cliffhanger; one annot just read one chapter, one must read the next, and the next....until it's gone. Then you're left wanting more.

Speaking of that, when can we now expect the full length (hint, hint, wink, wink,, nudge, nudge) Nyssa Glass 3, Mrs. Burke?!? :)

Another fun book in this series. The mysteries in this series are definitely pretty straightforward, but they are quick fun reads and I like the characters and the world that they are set in. Setting up a mystery to be solved on a contained mode of transportation is a pretty standard trope at this point, but it was a fun little story and definitely an interesting way to get Nyssa and Ellis from point A to point B with a little bit of flair. Also I like that they continue to move slowly with their relationship instead of the usual 'oh I met you last Tuesday and we are totally ~in love 4ever~ vibe that most books seem to go for. They obviously care about each other but they are still navigating exactly where they stand. Can't wait to see what they get up to next!
