About the author

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.
An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.
Married to her high school crush who is now a retired US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.
She is the author of The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project Superhero Universe, the Award Winning (2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction) Nyssa Glass Steampunk series, and MG/Fantasy "Cora and the Nurse Dragon," among others.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2017I love Nyssa Glass and all of these characters. I didn't quite get this one read by Christmas of 2016 (I was trying to make Nyssa Glass and the Cutpurse Kid last a long time), but I finished this one today, in one tear-drenchd read.
Throughout this series, H.L. has made incredibly printed comments about life love, and even death. This time, however, I think she wrote this one for me. I've got SO many passages hoghlighted, things I wish I'd read about two years ago, before my separation from my wife.
I can't talk about it much, without feeling like I'd give a ton of stuff away...but H.L. you are wise beyond your years. I will say this...kudos again for a beautiful romance brought to life in words, without all the gratuitous sex scenes. Nyssa and Ellis have a beautiful, real, genuine
love and that's what makes them so special to so many...and it is part of the reason I cried through the last three chapters.
God, what a book. Easily my favorite of the series...and I wish the series wasn't ending with the next book. Anytime you get an itch to write about Nyssa Mrs. Burke, you'll have my attention. Bless you for sharing this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2023Another will written Steampunk family and friends relationships adventure thriller short story by H. L. Burke (Nyssa Glass book 4 of 5). Nyssa Glass and Ellis are making plans for their first Christmas together. They are both having trouble finding the perfect gift 🎁. But then Christmas morning is there and it is prefect. I picked this novella because it was about Christmas. I would recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of holiday novels 👍🔰. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to Alexa read books 📚 as I do because of eye damage and health issues from shingles. 2023 👒😀💘🏡
I have listened to a number H. L. Burke novels and have not been disappointed. Happy reading and have fun 🌙😀
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2021This is the PERFECT holiday read.
It's sweet and uplifting,
Christmas themed,
and it's succinct
( which is ideal for the holidays when, ironically, there's often precious little leisure time to dive into a story.)
Nyssa is an extremely relatable and likable character. I enjoyed her kind heart and clever mind. I was invested in her outcome.
Ellis is a dreamboat.
How refreshing and beautiful to have a disabled character be celebrated, rather than sidelined or portrayed as broken.
I re-read the story's ending to it three times in a row because it was so adorable and heartwarming.
I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2018Nyssa Glass's Clockwork Christmas is a stand-alone novelette reminiscent of O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi." I've always loved that story and this one won't disappoint. H.L. Burke's rendition is full of steampunk references with a few surprises and plenty of interesting characters.
Nyssa and Ellis are both good at tinkering and creating new inventions. They also have each other's backs. This will be their first Christmas together and they both want to find each other the perfect gift. Things don't always go as planned and things go downhill before they go up.
I recommend that you read at least one other book in the series first to understand the main characters better, but it's not completely necessary. Some of the back story is scantily explained to help the reader follow along, which is a good thing, because too much recapping can get tedious. This is an awesome steampunk Christmas story and I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2016Pleasant follow-up to book one of the series with lite romance I can appreciate and a bevy of characters, some sentimental given passages like "Seriously? No one is too old for Christmas." and others whose prose I delight in making me shake my head like "Nyssa, Nyssa, Nyssa, it's Christmas! You don't stop at the bare minimum. You go over the top! How are you going to make the holiday special with only that?" Book had a nice blend of tension involving whether the doting couple could come to trust one another as well as a heartfelt message of 'traditions [being the ones] you make, not how things look to other people.' A very good read and already ordered up another of the Nyssa Glass series as I do enjoy them so!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2016Nysaa Glass's Clockwork Christmas is a wonderful addition to the Nyssa Glass series. Even if you're new to the world and characters, it's still a wonderful standalone holdiay romance. Full of sweet moments that make you smile it's a perfect read to put you in the mood for the Christmas season.
This installment of the series doesn't have the high stakes that are typical of the other books, but as a holiday story it doesn't need them. As a fan of the series, I love that even with something as "simple" as creating the perfect Christmas for her family, Nyssa still finds herself in over her head. It's just so very Nyssa.
The end result of Nyssa and Ellis' struggles to get each other the perfect present are...well perfect! Each gift fits both the giver and recipient so well. I dare you not to smile and say "Aww, that's so sweet," when you find out what they are!
