One Little Lie: a hate to love romance Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 262 ratings

Adam Oliver hated me. Loathed my very existence. He had every right to, but that didn’t make my life any easier the afternoon I had to rescue him on the side of the road.

But worse than rescuing a guy who hated me to his core was the lie I told my parents.

Because I’d just told them that my long-term boyfriend was finally back in town.

My long-term boyfriend who didn’t actually exist.

The one named Adam Oliver—the guy I’d crushed on all through high school.

So the real Adam had no idea that he and I were engaged in a years-long, committed, serious relationship.

And, somehow, some way, I needed to convince him to play along with my one little lie.

I relate so hard to Hollis. I am a yes person. And ok, it’s not really that much of my time, a sure I can help you person. It’s taken a LONNNG time to figure out how the hell to say no. I loved Hollis. She was amazing. Her growth was perfect.

I really liked Adams character, though at times I feel like he held on too strongly to feelings from high school. I get that he dealt with some serious insecurities having to move back home and start from scratch, but I didn’t care a whole lot for his emo moments.

I wish the ending was a little different. It felt rushed. I am glad that it didn’t have a “perfect ever after” where suddenly all the stars align and they become rich and the world is all ok..... such as her dad suddenly changing his mind. It had a believable ending, and I enjoyed that. Just wish I had a little more. I didn’t want it to end!

I have to start with this .... My HUGE dislike that how the whole trust fund/dad/mom storyline was NEVER fully wrapped up! So she gives her big speech. Admits the truth and then ... nothing! They never contact her?! She never looks up to see what they changed?! I felt that was a big storyline and we weren’t given enough.

Adam got the raw deal. He not only grew up “poor” and with the town drunk but then everything is put on him. Everything! While I didn’t like how he disappeared on H with his Grandma passing ... it made sense. It fit how he was raised and how he doesn't do well with feelings.

Hollis was lovely character - she was shy and closed off. She gave too much and did not how to say no. She wasn’t weak - but she was almost ... pathetic at times. Which all made me love her. I felt Tori was sort of her voice for so long that she didn’t know how to come out ... I would have been like Tori and taken care of her in a way!

I hope that Navy is explored in Keanu's book but wonder if that is predictable and it won't be her. Tori maybe?

I hope we get a Cassie book down the road! So much to explore there.

So. Let me start by saying I loved the story line of this book. The characters were well rounded and you get both POV's which I love. However I really feel like I could predict every single thing that was going to happen in this book before it happened, which I mean let's face it, is kind of common so wouldn't normally make me do this low of a rating. My problem came with how many typos and repeated sentences and words were in this book. I counted at least 26 by 60% in. I was almost ready to give up but I have never DNF a book and wasn't about to start now. I can deal with a few overlooked mistakes but this book made me feel like it wasnt edited at all. I am far from the grammar police, but when you have words and sentences repeated back to back in the same line it really throws me off.

I thought I couldn't possibly like this book more than I liked One Big Mistake (book 2, which I absolutely adored), but I think I like this one even more. Now I guess I'll just have to buckle down and try to wait for book number 3! 😳😩

I loved this story from beginning to end. It had more of a YA feel and I really enjoyed that. The characters were easy to connect with. We all went through the stubborn broody stage when we were young. I loved how Hollis stood her ground and still showed kindness. It's a breath of fresh air. I wished more people could be like her. Adam was a stubborn broken young man and I loved him instantly. Watching these two connect was beautiful and done at just the right pace. The writing draws in you and keeps you interested throughout the book. There is something very unique about the books that Whitney writes. It's like a piece of your life is in each one and you can't help but connect with each book on a spiritual level. I can't wait to read what Whitney comes up with next.

Hollis and Adam are classmates and she's had a mad crush on him forever. When he finally noticed her at a party, they both make an assumption that fractures what could have been. A few years later, Hollis has returned and ends up helping Adam. He begrudgingly accepts as he's now taking care of responsibilities not his own. Hollis's parents are overbearing and make demands. She turns to Adam and they agree to be "fake" boyfriend/girlfriend. Enter Casey, Adam's kid sister and a few other characters that helped the flow but it was slow moving and repetitive at times.

Whitney u did a wonderful job capturing the love hate feeling between Adam and Hollis. The chemistry between the two was automatic and Hollis was so shy. I loved how she left sticky notes for people she cared about. She definitely blossomed in a beautiful courageous butterfly. I loved them together. Way to go!!

Hollis admired Adam from afar in high school but was too shy. Adam saw Hollis as bad as the bullies that taunted him because she would sit there and do nothing to stop it. Fast forward a few years later and they find themselves face to face for the first time. Both have problems that the other can help with but will pride and years of bad feelings allow them to accept the other’s help?

This was an interesting book but I think a big moment was missed at the end when Hollis could have shared with Adam the conversation she had with her parents. It would have been nice to see his reaction to that. Also the direction she’d be going after college.
