Kailey & Jax
I knew from the teasers, I was going to like this book. I haven’t read too many widow finds her second chance at love storylines, but if they’re all this good, I need to read more of them. There’s a slight twist, but I think most people will see it coming. Overall, I enjoyed reading about Kailey & Jax. I think everything she felt was valid. You can’t put time on heartache, loss, & moving on. I don’t think she truly loved her ex, but did love him in a way that she knew how at the time. Her love for Jax far surpasses what she had for her husband. She also handled the twist unbelievably well and did something a lot of people wouldn’t do. That alone pushed my review rating up. She could’ve handled a lot of it very differently and nobody would’ve said a thing about it.

Gia Kim has written a 5-star book. This is the story of Kailey and Jax. Kailey is at work and gets a call from the police telling her that her husband Derrick had been in an accident and taken to the hospital. She leaves work and rushes to the hospital only to get there and be told that he is in surgery. A few hours later the doctor comes out and tells her that he didn't make it through the surgery. Now three months later, there is a knock on her door and she opens it. There is a good-looking man there with a package and he tells her that he was left at his sister's house by mistake. He tells her his name is Jax Rowe. She tells him her name is Kailey. There is something about Kailey that draws Jax to her. He feels like he needs to get to know her. A few nights later, Kailey has gone to The Hideaway Bar with Charlotte and Sierra and she looks over behind the bar and sees Jax as a bartender. She goes up to the bar and they start talking. Ashley, the other bartender is giving Kailey a dirty look and she keeps bumping into Jax. The girls are sitting at their table and Jax comes over to see if they need anything else and he apologized for the way Ashley acted. He tells her that he and Ashley had slept together at night and he didn't remember it and told Ashley it was a mistake. He tells her that now Ashley is making his life hell. Kailey and Jax form a friendship and she starts to have feelings for Jax. She is not sure that she should have them. She talks to her friend Charlotte about how she feels. Charlotte tells her that not everyone gives the same way. She should grieve how she wants and as long as she needs to. Kailey and Charlotte are meeting Jax and his best friend Grayson for dinner and at first, things are going well. Grayson meets Kailey outside the bathroom and he says something to her that upset her. She goes back to the table and tells Charlotte that they are leaving. When Grayson gets back to the table, he asks where the girls are and Jax tells him they left. Jax wants to know what Grayson had said to Kailey. Grayson tells him what was said to Kailey and Jax gets mad at Grayson. On his way home, he stops to check on Kailey and finds her still up. When she answers the door, he tells her that he just wanted to make sure she was all right. She tells him that she is and that she likes him but she needs to work some things out and needs time. He tells her that he will be there and to take all the time she needs. Jax calls her and tells her that he is going on a trip with Grayson and will be gone for a week. While Jax is gone, Kailey finds out some things about her husband that she didn't know. She doesn't call Jax and let him know what she is going to do to what she had just found out. Jax has called Kailey but she hasn't answered him and when he gets back home, he stops at Kailey's and sees things are not the same. Jax and Grayson have gotten called to come in to see Jay, Grayson's father. When they see him, he tells them that he is going to retire and that he would like to bring them in as partners. They would only need twenty-five thousand dollars each to get the bar. Jax is at work and Charlotte comes in and Jax asks about Kailey. Charlotte tells him that she has been through some stuff for the last few weeks but would tell him when she could.
Can things work out between Kailey and Jax?

    Gah this book.
It made me think about all the "what ifs."
Kailey is only just settling into married life when tragedy leaves her alone when her husband dies. While life brings her down she has a fighting spirit to not stay in the past no matter what secrets she uncovers.
Jax has sworn off all women after a bad one night stand but once he meets Kailey he might change his mind. Seeing a broken woman he instantly wants to help her and bring the light back into her life.
The connection these two have from the first transfer of a wrongly delivered package is instant. While they try to resist they both help each other work through some issues and they come out closer for it. Overall a great read about overcoming loss and finding new love.

I can't understand why the ARC readers gave this novella so many great reviews, unless they were friends and family of the author. This novella, for an infidelity trope, was completely unmoving. I felt nothing for the heroine and her situation. I didn't feel her pain or grief at all and her lack of emotion after finding out her husband of one year had been in love with another woman and had divorce papers drawn up, is completely unbelievable. Infidelity and betrayal romances are one of my favorite tropes, but this one was a huge disappointment.

Kailey is recently widowed after a year of marriage, and when some revelations come to light, she is questioning if she ever knew her husband at all. Jax is a bartender who has sworn off women, that is until he meets Kailey, and I loved how sweet, caring, and patient he is with her, and he enters her life at the perfect time. Can Jax convince Kailey to take a 2nd chance at happiness? This is a well written emotionally charged story which is filled with loss, grieving, betrayal, acceptance, healing, and love, which all leads to a touching and steamy addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend.

I think this book is another case of it’s not you it’s me. I had trouble connecting with the main characters and at times the dialogue seemed a bit awkward to me. There was also some loose ends that I felt should’ve been dealt with on page. Something I did really love was Kailey’s best friends Sierra and Charlotte. The way the supported her no matter what was amazing, and they always seemed to know when to nudge her on or when to pull back and let her set her own pace with things. Other than than the awkward dialogue I mentioned the book was well written. There was only a minor error or two I caught while reading. The romance would’ve been amazing if I could’ve connected with Jax and Kailey.

This touching story had my emotions all over the place and I really connected with Kailey. Grief is hard to get over and then to find out that the person you were married to is not who you really thought. Jax came in to her life at the right time. He was drawn to her and the emotions building between them is epic. This well written story will have you in their corner cheering Kailey on to finally getting a second chance for true love.

The concept was solid but the execution was lacking. There was barely a perceptible bit of grief before the main character focused on the beefy neighbor's plumbing. Every jarring secret was met with a bare minimum of emotion. In this case, this newly widowed woman discovering this level of her husband's secrets is comparable to finding out that her new washing machine was delivered without an electric cord.

This is a challenging theme to write, so I do get that. But I would like to have seen much more depth. Overall, I just began thinking of how part of the plot seemed borrowed from another book.
