One Night to Fall (Kinney Brothers Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 636 ratings

An uplifting romance between a stubborn woman and the man who broke her heart.

"I'm gonna love you forever, y'know that?"
"I know."

Do we choose love? Or is it something decided by fate?

To Kinsey McKenna, Patrick Kinney was a persistent glob of sticky peanut butter. He had been stuck to the roof of her mouth, since they were both three years old, when fate seemed to send his family next door to hers. All the way from the coast of Ireland to River Canyon, Connecticut.

Over twenty-nine years, fate has been both kind and cruel and many choices have been made.

Can things go back to when they were more innocent and magical? Patrick has a plan and just one night to try and take back the reins of his destiny and put the wrong things right with a trip down memory lane.

Fall in love again with this novella of firsts and second chances, in a little town where everything meant everything.

One Night to Fall by Kelsey Kingsley is a heartfelt, slow burn, second chance romance that is told by moving back and forth between the present story and significant moments from the past. I read this book in one sitting, unable to put it down once I started. The story captivated me and completely captured my heart!

Kinsey McKenna and Patrick Kinney met at three years old when the Kinneys moved next door. They were inseparable, growing up together as best friends, becoming more than friends, falling in love, experiencing all of their firsts together. At 20-years-old, some mistakes were made, shattering their relationship and splitting them apart.

Patrick and Kinsey have not spoken or seen each other since their break up. After being away for ten years, Kinsey moves back home due to a family emergency. It is now two years later and Patrick's divorce is finalized. He never stopped loving Kinsey and he wants her back, but Kinsey continues to reject his advances. Finally, she agrees to go out with him one night with the understanding that he'll stop pursuing her.

Is one night long enough to make her remember? Is it long enough to fall in love?

"We never had a choice, we never stood a chance. Our fates were determined the moment I stepped over the invisible line between his front lawn and mine."

A beautifully written, humorous, heartbreaking, sweet, touching tale about soul mates finding their way back to each other.

This is a book that I picked up as a freebie about three years ago, and I'm a little sad that it took me so long to read it!
Patrick and Kinsey were childhood friends/sweethearts, but have been apart for over 10 years when we meet them for the first time. Author Kinglsey uses the alternating timeline very well to let us see these two fall in love for the first time and reconnect at the same time.
One Night to Fall is a fairly quick read. I enjoyed the way the story was told, but I do with we had seen a little bit more of the reconnection/relationship building.

This book is why I love second chance romances. And honestly, what happened between Patrick and Kinsey seemed like something you couldn’t come back from. But wow, as this story unfolded, you could truly feel how much these two loved each other. You could truly feel the heartbreak when they broke up and then the devastating anguish when Patrick did something that would permanently alter their lives forever.

But l loved the way he put years into working to get her back. I thought it was spectacular the way he finally forced them to hash everything out. All their feelings, all their pain. I just loved the way that confrontation went down. It was so emotional and gut wrenching.

    SPOILER COMING UP

The only reason I couldn’t give this a full five stars is because I just thought the ten year separation was way too long. I also don’t think it was reasonable that he would marry someone he absolutely hated just because of a drunken mistake. Yes, he got her pregnant and he was Irish catholic and all, but still, it seemed so unbelievable in this day and age. Especially because he was madly in love with Kinsey.

Aside from that, I loved this book SO much!!

This review is not easy to write because I LOVED this story, and I don’t want to underscore it with a mediocre review. This story is a soulmate story, a coming of age story, and a second chance story rolled into one. I cannot get the little mantra “Patrickinney, Patrickinney, Patrickinney” out of my head. This story takes you through all the emotions of first love, first heartbreaks, youthful mistakes, and finding a path to your future. And all expertly done in the length of a novella!

If you like the song, “Greatest Love Story” by LANCO, this book is like that song on overdrive. You will not be disappointed by anything but not getting enough of Patrick and Kinsey.

As is true of all of Kelsey Kingsley’s writings, this story is full of great lines, and I’m a sucker for lines:

“I had to cross the pond to give her my heart, and she had to cross the Sound to take it away.”
“Sometimes you need ten years to realize that nothing is getting better and nothing is hurtin’ less, and nothing is getting’ that feckin’ woman out of your head.”
“Distance was needed, distance was good. Distance was torture.”
“Nobody else would have been good enough, nobody else would have been right enough. Nobody else would have been him.”
And my FAVORITE: “If the choice is you or kids I’ve never even met, I will always choose you.”

Your only regret in reading this story will be having to wait for more about the Kinney brothers and life in River Canyon.

Kinsey and Patrick were meant for each other. From the time they were introduced at three years old, they were inseparable... Until they weren't.

Growing up can take a toll on even the best of relationships and distance doesn't help. When Kinsey went off to college, the last thing she expected was to want more than what she had. She felt a need to explore, to see what else was out there. That mistake took 10 years from both of their lives, causing them to live miserable, lonely lives.

I won't go into detail because I don't want to ruin the book for anyone, but it was a very long decade without each other. I am thankful for happily ever afters.

This story is full of flashbacks and nostalgia of high school loves. It takes you back through memory lane and makes you think about your own past loves and contemplate on old mistakes. I have always said I live life with no regrets, but if I was Kinsey and/or Patrick I would have to rethink that.

Kinsey met Patrick at three years old. This is their love story.
Kinsey and Patrick were childhood best friends, who became sweethearts, throughout high school. Kinsey went auto university and Patrick stayed home. She felt she should have a break and told Patrick and it crushed him. Ten years later she comes back.

What a great story. Loved it.

I love the metaphor that runs through this book - doors. The author uses it to neatly mark the transition through the various stages of life that Patrick and Kinsey go through.

Their story is the love of a lifetime. From the age of three, they have been best friends, confidants, boyfriend/girlfriend, lovers; everything to each other. They have always been in love with each other, even in the decade or so that they weren’t together.

The majority of the book takes place over the course of one night, and recalls their relationship through a series of reminiscences.

I love the way this book is written; it’s comfortable, engaging and enormously readable. The characters are loveable, the supporting cast intriguing and it’s safe to say that I loved every minute of this book.

This is short second chance romance of childhood friends to lovers. However once Kinsey is at college far away from Patrick she yearns to at least try for a different life outside her small town & life. However when she finds the error of her ways she finds out he's getting married with a child on the way.
10yrs later she returns due to her father health & take over the family business. While the love is still there, both feel betrayed but Patrick wants Kinsey to give him one night to convince her what they promised all those years ago. (no cheating)
This is told in flashbacks & dual POV's. While I did like the story it didn't knock me out. It was short & sweet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted
Reviewed in Canada on March 20, 2020
I am conflicted about this book because it is well written, but the story itself has left me with mixed feelings. I'm glad the couple finally got their HEA, but it took them 10 years!!! And in the ensuing time, both the H & h were only existing, and not really living. I tried to keep an open mind about Patrick and Kelsey's heartbreaking behaviour, but can't help thinking that both were to blame for what happened. Ultimately, I think all characters involved in this tragedy were just too immature to deal with their situation. I believe Patrick was trying to correct a wrong by being honourable, but just made a bad situation worse.
    ***SPOILER ALERT***
Kelsey was definitely selfish and didn't consider Patrick's feelings, while he was so steeped in depression that he had unprotected sex with the h's nemesis. I certainly think Christine should shoulder a lot of the blame too. It certainly negatively impacted a lot of people all around, which resulted in a wasted decade.
