On the Off Chance: A lesfic coming of age romance novel Kindle Edition
Meet Kay and Emi.
Kay just started her final year of high school and is juggling school, work, and family on top of her new responsibilities as captain of the volleyball team with the state-wide volleyball championship and with it, her only ticket to college, just around the corner.
Emi just started her final year of high school, too, and she is trying her best to come to terms with the fact that she, the only daughter from a conservative Christian family, might not be as straight as she always prayed she was.
Kay and Emi have been in the same class for three years, but they don’t know really each other. Not yet anyway. But when they find themselves unexpectedly thrown into the same classes, an unlikely friendship begins to blossom which might soon turn into something more.
But is there any chance the two of them can be together when Kay has been struggling to acknowledge her own emotions ever since her last breakup and Emi hasn’t told anyone about her liking girls out of fear her family and friends might reject her? And while the two of them are struggling against the ties that are pulling them closer together, there is also the volleyball championship and a trophy that needs to be won.

About the author

During the day, Marie is a primary and secondary school education worker for languages and liberal arts and at night, a writer of LGBT+ fiction. She holds a degree in English and German Philology and a master's in Foreign Language Linguistics from the University of Potsdam. With her books, she wants to tell the stories she would have liked to read when she was a short bespectacled teen stuck in a closet full of flannels she didn’t dare to wear (make no mistake, she may have swapped her glasses for contact lenses, but she is still essentially the same height she was when she was twelve, although she can now be found wearing a flannel from time to time).
Outside of teaching and writing she enjoys (in no specific order) bookshop cafés, being surprised by cats on the street and trying her utmost to keep her plants alive (the winter rose on her windowsill has been alive since last Christmas, a personal record). She grew up in a small town near Berlin and today divides her time between Germany and the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow-Burning Yet Captivating
From the very beginning, "On the Off Chance" grabbed my attention with its engaging structure and well-crafted characters. The dual POV worked really well, allowing me to connect with both protagonists and understand their unique perspectives. I liked how their relationship unfolded gradually, with minimal interaction at first, which made their differing feelings toward each other even more interesting.
The pacing of the story was spot on, with the author introducing new, intriguing details after every chapter, making it hard to put the book down. The vivid descriptions of places and environments helped me really visualize the settings and feel immersed in the story.
Despite having a large cast of characters, the author does an excellent job of keeping things clear, reminding you who’s who without overwhelming you. I also appreciated how even the side characters had their own backstories, which added depth and made it easy to empathize with everyone.
One of the book’s strongest points is its portrayal of diverse family backgrounds. Each character comes from a different story, some of which are quite emotional, making it easy to connect with them on a deeper level. Watching the protagonists grow and overcome their insecurities was satisfying, and the unexpected ending wrapped everything up in a way that felt true to the story.
The author's writing style is clear and accessible, which made it an enjoyable read, even for non-native English speakers. Overall, "On the Off Chance" is an engaging and thoughtfully written book that I would definitely recommend!
