About the author

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic.
An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies, or television series (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Star Trek all took their turns), but she has grown to be what she considers a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.
Married to her high school crush who is now a retired US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.
She is the author of The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project Superhero Universe, the Award Winning (2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction) Nyssa Glass Steampunk series, and MG/Fantasy "Cora and the Nurse Dragon," among others.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2017Sir Percy is a magical zero, no blessing and no curse. Princess Matty has a hundred fairies mad at her, but none have managed to curse her yet. Together, they flee.
In trying to avoid fairies and find a way to protect Matty from curses, Percy and Matty encounter a cheating prince, an ogre, a spineless traveler, a dragon, an enchanted path, fairies, and bacon. Percy learns what the fairies really think of him, and he gets to spend time as a stone pillar. Both learn what true friendship is, and when to recognize love.
I liked that Matty had to save her first kiss just in case she was enchanted and needed rescued.
I liked Gork. The prejudice against Percy was a bit single-minded, but it was a short enough book to not bother me too much. I liked the length of story but missed some of the richer details usually present in novels. Some scenes were glossed over so fast that I never felt truly present.
Oh, I liked that Percy had thoughts, but they felt more like interruptions than inner dialogue. Each thought had its own paragraph.
This book was clean (a couple bad guys insinuated that Percy was taking advantage of the pretty princess, but Percy never did).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021It's books like these that make me wish I had more time to catch up on all my to-read books. I mean can you even imagine clicking on your to-read list and only a few titles are staring back at you expectantly instead of 7 or 8 pages of book after book after book after book....you get the idea.
An Ordinary Knight was anything but an ordinary story with its cute dragon, vengeful fairies, cowardly prince, and kind ogre. Sir Percy and Princess Matty find themselves on an unexpected adventure of self-discovery where loyalty, friendship, bravery and courage are put to the test.
For the most part I liked the characters. Dusty was suspicious at first but lovable by the end. The underdog turned hero, Percy, was sweet and I liked his flaw of getting himself in trouble by talking before thinking. It made his character more believable. Matty could be frustrating sometimes and she tended to switch between strong female lead to damsel in destress pretty quickly. She was a little flighty and I admit I was offended that she took any liking at all to Edwin. Gross.
Overall, this was really a sweet and humorous story with a lot of great fairytale elements. Ironically, magic wasn't the center of this story- true love and sacrifice were. And that cover is lovely!! I need more of this series! Highly recommend to lovers of fantasy and classic fairytales.

An Ordinary Knight by H.L.Burke is not a fairytale retelling. This fairytale like story is a completely original tale that feels like an older story.
The princess Matilda has lived in a tower her whole life to protect her from fairies. They are out to get her.
Percy has lived his whole life as an ordinary guy because fairies want nothing to do with him.
When these two get together it turns into an adventure.
Narrator Rena Gail does an amazing job of differing her voice to make each character sound unique. one of my favorite narrators.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2020Straightforward fairytale with a solid theme and a happy ending. I enjoyed the aspect of Percy being ordinary, with no magic blessing, and his journey to accepting that lack of magic was ok. There wasn’t much of a story arch for the Princess but I enjoyed her innocence and heart-warming character. Aside from a few awkwardly worded phrasings and lackluster combat scenes (I just didn’t enjoy the hand to hand fight and the sword fight seemed a bit simple too), this was a fun story. I loved cheering on the characters and was anxious to see how in the world the ending would work out for everyone involved. I’d recommend it for a young audience or those who love clean fairytales with no swearing or adult content.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2017There isn't anything more tragic than a loveable, but average-looking Knight in a fairy tale who scores a complete magical zero! In the Kingdom of Ithelia, no knight wants to be cursed by the fairies; but, they do want to be granted at least one magical character trait. Poor Sir Percy sits on the outside, always looking in. There's absolutely nothing about him that would make anyone notice him, certainly not a Princess. When he meets Princess Matilda (Matty) he vows to do everything in his meager powers to protect the beautiful Princess. He'll do whatever's necessary, even if she is promised to a neighboring Prince.
This is a delightful and quick story that will tug at your heart and find you rooting for the underdog more than once. I loved little Dusty and his mischevious ways of showing up most unexpectedly. This is a clean read, with a touch of romance, and a quest to save a Princess and her magical first kiss. You may even find an ogre or a dragon along the way! Beware of the fairies. They are a nasty lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story
I really liked reading this story and watching the characters grow as they meet challenges. There wasn't much violence and it was sweet without being overly so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Being Fairy Blessed is Overrated
Being fairy blessed is overrated. I enjoyed this cute story which retells Rapunzel's story as a background to Sir Percy's demonstration that just being an ordinary person may be just what is needed to overcome a curse - no extra blessings or curses required. I wonder if Percy's children will share his particular capability.

I loved the premise that the involvement of fairies in your life (for good or ill) is a status symbol, but that being ignored by them has its benefits too.
The true pleasure of reading this story was watching ordinary knight Percival grow in to himself and his abilities without interference. Mostly without help anyway.
Princess was also fun to see in action. She has some very typical princess traits which by themselves could make her irritating. However, she also has a wonderful practicality and sense of agency. These are blended together so it is believable that at the beginning she feels she does need a prince, but the way she goes about it is and learns from her mistakes is very natural.
A very easy and heart warming read.
