- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2020An excellent read with twists and turns and a few larger than life characters, which I like. As the story built up, I found myself wondering what would happen to them all. I won't give away any spoilers suffice to say that this is part of The Laurelhurst Chronicles but in this book, the protagonist spends a year in a psychiatric clinic in America. I applaud the author's intense research into what took places in these clinics and mental institutions during the 1960's when ECT treatment combined with other barbaric remedies were considered to be beneficial. The family has a son with profound intellectual and physical disabilities - one of the reasons the protagonist, Lydie, has difficulty coping - and in those days, there was a stigma attached to that sort of thing. This also was well researched and in some cases, the author has visited places that were used. The research helped to make her characters all the more plausible. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2020I’ve been following this family saga from book one and was eager to see what Ms. Butler had in store for the characters I’ve grown to love and root for. I certainly was not disappointed! In this new installment, Lydie finds herself in a psychiatric facility, locked in an embittered battle with demons of her past. The damage that had been inflicted upon her by a previous facility - namely the highly controversial shock therapy - isn’t helping in the slightest. On top of it, she’s plagued with guilt for her son’s genetic disorder and feels like she has failed him as a parent. Will the gentle care of the new psychotherapist and the support of her family be enough or will Lydie succumb to the pressure accumulated throughout the years? Read it to find out.
As all previous installments, this book is angsty, deeply psychological, and dealing with such relevant matters as controversial medical practices, the stigma of mental illness, feminism, drug addiction, parenting, and many more. It is meticulously researched and populated with the characters that are real and relatable, which I personally always appreciate in the novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series and I would definitely recommend them all to all fans of the genre.
