Painting in the Rain Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

Helping teenagers is tough. They face so many dangers – peer pressure, drugs, pregnancy, STDs. As a trained social worker, Mike knows all about it. He’s taken a temporary job on the Oregon coast working with at-risk kids. But when he meets Gabe, the father of one of his charges, he finds himself in another type of danger – that of falling in love and getting stuck in a small, conservative town, not to mention living with an angry teenager. And yet, he’s drawn to Gabe in a way he never imagined possible.

Gabe, whose own father left before he was born, stays in a town where he no longer feels welcome. He’s living the life of a lonely artist so that he can be a father to his son, a bond that’s been threatened by divorce and Gabe’s public coming out. When he meets Mike, Gabe is bowled over with a longing so deep that he finds himself willing to risk everything.

There are plenty of dangers in a small town. When a gay kid gets hurt and they refuse to leave him to his fate, Mike and Gabe may be risking more than their hearts.

This is my first time reading this author's work. I found the story compelling and the characters engaging. I just felt like the book ended too quickly. A lot more explanation needed to be given as to why some characters behaved the way that they did. Also, what did the future bring to Mike and Gabe, Evan, Trevor, and their interpersonal relationships? It seems more could have been written to satisfy the readers' questions. Some chapters could have been added and other chapters could have been more in-depth in their storytelling. I hate finishing a book and feeling cheated. I still give it 4 stars because I feel it is a good story.

I enjoyed the book, but there was a point where I really wondered if the author went back and read what had been written or how an editor didn't catch the big error? Trevor, Gabe's son, goes from being seventeen and so out of control, he cannot be trusted to stay home alone while his mother goes on a date, to fifteen and it makes a little more sense why he can't be home alone...how does an error like that not get noticed??
Mike is trying to help Trevor who is in his work crew of troubled youth, after catching him with a girl in a compromising position. He takes Trevor home so he can speak with his dad. When Mike meets Gabe, they both feel an instant attraction. Gabe is the epitome of a good guy, Mike is too, but Gabe sacrifices so much to be a good man; gets drunk with a friend in college and gets her pregnant, even though she knows he's gay, marries her, stays married for thirteen years (although not faithfully), stays in a bigoted little town where most everyone treats him horribly...
I was so mad throughout most of this book at Trevor and his mother, Carol. I'm not sure how she was shocked that her marriage to a gay man didn't last, but even if she was, she had no right to treat her ex the way she did. When Trevor said he would kill his dad if he ever had a relationship with a man in their town, I was appalled. I understand he's hurt by his parents divorce, but a kid telling their parent they'll kill them was horrible.
I loved that Mike and Gabe, even with his horrible child, stuck together through everything. They tried to keep their relationship a secret, but when it came out, they went with it and tried to make it the new normal for Trevor. If they didn't make a big deal out of it, maybe he won't either.
I enjoyed the plot twist, except when the police tied to blame what happened on Mike and then Gabe. I was heartbroken for Evan. I was happy that Gabe brought Trevor to the hospital to see what effect bigotry and hatred could have though and told him he needs to figure out what type of person he is going to be.
It was a good read. Frustrating in a (mostly) good way. Although I'm still trying to figure out what the title has to do with the book....

I’ve read this author before. This is a mm contemporary story set in the USA. Gabe is a divorced father of troubled teenager Trevor. Mike is on a summer job as Trevor’s councillor. Spares fly but also a twisted back story. I’ll read more from this author.

Loved this short and sweet (and crazy) story. Touches very delicate situations and covers all points of view, as well as the budding romance between the two main characters.

Hot cover... I really like this one more than the other one!

I'm conflicted about this story... it's the first I've read by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect going on.. I'm not ashamed to say, I picked it based on the cover lol then the premiss was really good. I wasn't sure how old the kid was going to be or anything but i enjoy stories with kids involved.

Okay, so first we have Mike; a social worker who works with at risk teens... That's where he meets Trevor... Trevor is the epitome of a bad kid... he's got an attitude that literally turned me off the book so many times; if I'd known a kid like him in real life it would be hard to help them and not beat them for the crap that comes out of their mouthes or the way they treat people. I understand he's angry and his mom and dad got divorced because his dad came out....but, his mother knew his father liked men and only married her to do the right thing because she got pregnant.... that's more than most would do, I can assure you. And Carol, Gabe's ex wife, Trevors mom..... what? She thinks because she married a gay man then was surprised 13 years later he's STILL GAY, that gives her a right to talk about him in front of her child.... I can understand him being hurt, most kids are when their parents divorce and it's worse when one cheats or one gets hurt worse than the other but this was beyond ridiculous.... First time one of my kids tell me they'll kill me if I do something they don't like.... nevermind, that'll never happen cuz if my kids even think it; I'll redirect that thinkin the second it happens..... Angry? It's okay that he acts the way he does cuz he's angry??? Nope... not even a little and i hated that it went unexcused....

The way the town treated them....the police... how was that not illegal??? Mike mentions they could have a civil suit; I wish they would have and we would have gotten to see the outcome of that... Probably nothing if the judge was just as biggoted as the rest of em....GRRRR... it made me so mad....
And Frank.. I don't even know what to think about that.... All he done over a stupid job title? SERIOUSLY?? I'm glad he met the fate that he did but poor Evan and Billy didn't deserve what he dished out.... I'm glad that it ended on a good note.. I'm glad Mike and Gabe stuck together and their love overcame it all but I don't feel like Trevor got the karmatic kick in the face he deserved (yes, even though he's a 15 year old kid) and I don't feel like he really learned anything or was any better at being tolerant nor was his mother shown the same slap in the mouth that she deserved...
Okay, I'll stop ranting lol This was just okay for me.

A beautiful story. Not the hearts and flowers of most romance books.
A little gritty which made it that much more interesting.

If this had been another 3 chapters/c.60 pages longer, then this perhaps would have been a four or five star read. But, it was too short. It felt unfinished & the characters, though in a good place by the end, had too many events that were not entirely tidied up. The story needed more.

Whilst the book was enjoyable, there were a few things that caused irritation when reading: 1) The ex-wife - why are they always stereotyped in such a negative way? 2) the police's targeting of Mike (& Gabe) purely (seemingly) because he was gay (& what happened to the possible law suit??); 3) Trevor (name choice???!!!) the son was not appealing - yes, perhaps understandably so & parts of his character were well written & realistic, but he was just unpleasant! 4) Then there was the denouement with the bad guy - seemed to come out of nowhere - can't give too much away here, but there were the resulting loose ends that the author never cleared up, leaving the reader with unanswered questions.

Ultimately this was well written & enjoyable, with both Mike & Gabe likeable MCs, but... It was too short with too many loose ends.
