The Palisade (Lavender Shores Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 617 ratings

Confident businessman Joel Rhodes sees the small California town of Lavender Shores as nothing more than a business transaction and a final stepping-stone to the position he’s been working towards his entire life. It was supposed to be nothing more than one night in town to close the deal, and sleeping with one of the local men, no matter how gorgeous, meant nothing more than a few hours of fun.
Andrew Kelly is perfectly content with the life he has in his hometown. So much so, that the only thing missing is someone to share it with. Going to bed with a tourist was never meant to be the answer to his dreams, just a beautiful distraction. He could get back to looking for Mr. Right the next day.
Both Andrew and Joel’s worlds are turned upside down when a few hours of pleasure gets extended to a couple of days. Even that shouldn’t be a big deal. You can’t fall in love in such a short time, that isn’t how it works. However, if destinies collide, a few short days may be all it takes to find your soul mate. Even so, when secrets and motivations get tangled, destiny may do nothing more than leave two hearts in pieces...

Rosalind Abel grew up tending chickens along side her sweet and faithful Chow, Lord Elgin. While her fantasy of writing novels was born during her teen years, she never would have dreamed she’d one day publish steamy romances about gorgeous men. However, sometimes life turns out better than planned.

In between crafting scorching sex scenes and helping her men find their soul mate, Rosalind enjoys cooking, collecting toys, and making the best damn scrapbooks in the world (this claim hasn’t been proven, but she’s willing to put good money on it).

She adores MM Romance and the power it has to sweep the reader away into worlds filled with passion, steam, and love. Rosalind also enjoys her collection of plot bunnies, and welcomes new fuzzy ones in her home all the time, so feel free to send any adorable ones her way.

    RATING 4.5 STARS

The Palisade is book one in the Lavender Shores series by Rosalind Abel. This is my very first book by Rosalind. I’ve owned it for quite a while. I honestly don’t know why I waited so long to finally read it because it was just wonderful.

Andrew Kelly is thirty three years old and works as a real estate agent in the tiny town, Lavender Shores, on the coast of Northern California. He loves living in this town. It’s his home and always will be. On the night of his older brother’s birthday dinner, he first saw him at the bar. Their eyes met and he couldn’t look away. It was only supposed to be a one night stand but in that one night, Andrew found what he’d been missing from his life all these years. He found love.

Joel Rhodes is thirty five years old and works for his father’s huge corporation in San Francisco. He has spent his life trying to please his father, trying to prove that he is worthy of moving up in the company. Which is why he is in Lavender Shores. As soon as he looked across the bar and saw the man with the beautiful blue eyes, he knew he needed him. It was meant to be just for the night. Or maybe he could try to lengthen his trip to two nights to have a little bit more time with him. But then he’d have to return to his life in San Francisco.

All it took was a touch of hands for both Joel and Andrew to know that this was something more. And when they were given more time together, their feelings quickly blossomed! It should be impossible to fall in love with someone in only twenty four hours but it was happening. Only Joel is keeping secrets. Andrew doesn’t know why he is really in Lavender Shores and who his father really is. Once he finds out, will it be the end? Or will Joel be able to figure out a way to have it all, to please his father and also to be with Andrew?

I loved these two and I also adored this little community. Andrew’s father was a total hoot! I mean, he had no filter what-so-ever!! It is such a fairy tale little town. I could picture myself living there. I felt terrible for Joel and for the way his father treated him, for the way he still tried so hard to please him. I think fate found these two when they most needed it and showed them the kind of life they deserved, together. They had some hurdles to jump before they could make that happen but I knew they’d find their way. I can’t wait to read book two, The Garden, which will be Andrew’s best friend, Gilbert’s book. We met him in this book and I am so looking forward to his story.

    My Review:
    Overall: 3.75
    Performance: 4.0
    Story: 3.75

This was a good book for a few days of light-hearted listening. The book isn't super-deep, but it's not that type of story.

Joel is in Lavender Shores to do one thing...to set up a new flagship store for his father's mega-coffee corporation. The problem...what Joel wants to do goes against everything that the town stands for and allows.

Andrew is a true son of Lavender Shores. He's grown up there as have all of the generations of family before him that founded the town. While small town life isn't for everyone, Andrew loves it and never plans to leave. This small town is in his heart.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. Like I mentioned, it's a fluffy little read. There's a good basis for the story and I enjoyed all the characters throughout (although I'm seriously intrigued by Andrew's 'unique' parents).

I enjoyed listening to it and always enjoy Kirt Graves narration.

So, here's a little known fact about romance novels: they have a lot in common with fairy tales. Both genres deal in love at first site, magical locations where anything can happen, and, when well written, can make you believe in love at first sight

Fiction in general, and fairy tales and romance specifically, are built on the notion of taking something intangible and making it real. Lavender Shores is like a fairy tale "realm" (to borrow from a popular televion program), complete with majestic locations and colorful characters.

Andrew is an idealist and a romantic. He has his entire life planned out, and is simply waiting for that one man to come along and sweep him off his feet. His very own Prince Charming, if you will.

Joel is more practical. He comes to Lavender Shores for business, and with a secret.

When the two lay eyes on each other across a crowded bar, the connection is instant and magical. It might sound cliche, but trust me, it works.

    From the book:
"He smiled at me. 'It's nice to meet you too.'

Simple words. Said to every person who'd ever shaken hands during a first meeting. Words I'd just said seconds ago. But the way he said them...Like there was relief. Like he'd been waiting. Waiting for me."

I'm not often prone to highlighting passages from books. But this one? Absolutely. There are so many beautiful lines, crafted in such a manner that you can feel the connection between Andrew and Joel. Even though they may not understand it, they can't deny it's there. Almost as if it were a living thing.

    From the book:
"My soul recognized his. My body felt instantly at home.
    I just knew."

Some readers may not like insta-love, and that's fine. I, however, am a great believer that when you find "The One", you just know. Andrew and Joel both struggle with this, not quite sure if what they feel is real or fleeting. I was glad of that. It added a sense of realism to the fairy tale.

The Palisade itself (yes, it's an actual place) is described in such vivid detail that you can almost see the colors and smell the lavender, further lending to the fairy tale aspect of the story. The supporting characters are just as colorful as the landscape they populate.

Holding true to every fairy tale, there is a main villain. However, it's not who you would expect, nor are they revealed in the manner you would think.

I cannot truthfully do justice to how good this book was. It's such a tender first outing for a new series. I really look forward to seeing what other magic can be woven.

Because in Lavender Shores, dreams really do come true

Andrew Real Estate worker, is home grown and at 33 wants nothing more than to find 'the one' happy to settle in Lavender shores with him so he can start his dream of happy ever after. He's tried relationships in the past but no-one ever stuck with him since he knows he won't be happy anywhere but in the small coastal town where he was born and raised. Everyone it seems is hell bent on getting the heck outta town except him.
Joel Rhodes, only son to the Rhodes empire, is a driven, determined man, hell bent on obtaining that elusive position in his fathers coffee company. Handsome, sexy and rich he knows money will buy just about anything, including resistant coffee shop owners stopping him from owning a coffeehouse in Lavender Shores, where planning rules prohibit more than one type of bussiness.
Joel meets Andrew the first night he hits the small town and a very strong mutual attraction ensures a steamy hot night together, so hot in fact it that leaves both men wanting more. Joel has his own agenda for being in town and it's all business now with a side of sweet sexy sin bearing the name Andrew, and he knows if Andrew finds out what his master plan is, then this fledgling thing they have going will crumble to dust. An absolutely ripper of a first book for this eries, we even get a tease for the next one, which I can't wait for (pre-ordered) and super excited. Was a lovely week written smoking hot romance. 6 Stars!!
