4.3 out of 5 stars 811 ratings

A lady companion, an arrogant earl – should she save him from a horrid fate?

Giles, the Earl of Bargrave, does not want to be in London but since he has promised to chaperone his niece, knows he must keep to his word. Frustrated that the girl has also brought a companion, Giles does his best to ignore her, often reminding her harshly that he is well able to chaperone his niece without her aid.

Miss Emma Lawder has never had a London Season and doubts she will ever have one. Sent away as a companion by an uncaring father, Emma struggles against the earl’s displeasure. When, by chance, she uncovers a plot to ensnare him into marriage, Emma must choose just what she will do next. Will she tell him the truth or leave him to his fate? And can they find a way together that might just soften both of their hearts?

Goodreads Reviewers:
Delightful Regency tale with a twist. This is a great story and I found it hard to put it down. I highly recommend it.

This was an excellent story, a bit different but I loved every minute reading it.

TOTALLY enjoyed this book So many unexpected things happening.

This was a fun page-turning story. An Earl with an attitude, a Miss abandoned by her family to forge her own way, a Lady having her come-out season... a really good easy reading story.

A strong storyline and an impressive plot. This is one tremendously enjoyable read. It's heartwarming, fast paced and filled with romance and an unexpected connection, and a unique romance.

Amazon Reviewers:
A superb Regency! A very well-crafted plot allows Emma to attend the Season as a companion and for a forever love to be found. The characters portray both the good and bad of the ton.

The role of companion could be a demeaning one. Emma Lawder was fortunate that Lady Juliet was a kind, considerate young woman. This is a sweet Regency novel which includes kindness, romance, and revenge.

Ms. Pearson has written another book which is a very pleasant read and a wonderful story. It is well written and very enjoyable to read and I recommend that you read it.

This is another fantastic regency romance by Rose Pearson, the Queen of regency romance! I really loved this book. I loved that Lady Juliet stuck up for her companion and always did what she felt was right. She showed her uncle that being outspoken was not always as bad thing. Lady Fullerton was the perfect nastiest villain! I did feel bad for Lord Fullerton. I thought this book was original and well written. I highly recommend this book and this author!

The strain of being a companion, when you should be having your own coming out , is hard indeed. The grace and style in which Lady Emma handles this is superb. The strife she receives from Lady Juliet's Uncle, the earl of Belgrave, is hurtful and harsh. Can she survive the season? Read and find out!

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother (Mom didn't like the sexy book covers!)

She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her. She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.

On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!

I love how Rose Pearson pens a Regency romance. Free from bedroom scenes and crude language, there's still a wonderful story unfolding with each turn of the page. One reads a Rose Pearson Regency romance for the story, not for graphic play-by-plays of intimacy between two characters. I'm thankful for this lovely story. Giles' sometimes strangely naive choices made him a less favored character to me. I loved Lady Juliet and Emma, though, almost the entire time.
If you're looking for clean, well-written, Regency romance, I highly recommend this book to you.

Simple story of three characters who start out with many misconceptions. They struggle with a conflict between expectations and goals.

The Earl starts out very head strong and has spent his time and life in very selfish ways and wished to continue as such. Fate intervened and his high spirited niece and her companion arrive and shake his world.

Through gentle guidance and friendly advice from a friend the Earl sees how he needs to change to be a better person.

Add a large dose of intrigue and you have a enjoyable story.

An easy, clean and enjoyable read. Emma and Giles. Emma becomes the companion of Giles niece when she comes to London for the Season. Emma is by rights a Lady too, but her father has refused her a dowry or a Season in London and sent her off to become a companion. Emma is instrumental in saving Giles from a forced engagement to an unsavory Lady of the Ton. A promised happily ever after.

This, as so many of Ms Pearson’s books, is pleasant to read. It’s a fairly short book. The characters are believable. One glaring error: The deb and her companion would not have arrived in London two days before her presentation to the Queen, which took a great deal of preparation, especially with a clueless, unwed uncle her only sponsor. The uncle had made no arrangements or invitations. Granted, he had sort of hoped it would take care of itself, but the girl’s mother would surely have given him instructions, as she was unable to accompany her daughter. It set a bad tone for the entire book. She has some good books and some so-so books. This falls in between.

Emma has been forced to become a companion to a young lady named Juliet. Tossed out of her home by her Baron father to make her way in the world, Emma considers herself fortunate to have found a kind family with a wonderful daughter she is close in age to. Although she is sent to London with Juliet to be sponsored by Juliet’s uncle, the Earl of Bargrave, for the Season, Emma is not jealous she cannot have a Season herself. Emma is humble and kind. She is wading through new territory and is trying to adjust to the ups and downs of this restrictive lifestyle.

Emma, though a lady herself has been enlisted as a companion for Lady Juliet's first season. Emma's father refuses to supply her with a dowery or a season and is having her wages sent to him. Lady Juliet being a kind young lady tries hard to find a suitable husband for her companion as she is supposed to be finding a suitable husband for herself. Lady Juliet's grumpy and totally unhelpful Uncle finds this whole London Season squiring his niece around a great imposition but has promised his sister his assistance. A reluctant Uncle, a mischievous niece and a kind companion with several devious plots makes this a clean interesting read.

Story too thin and not true to period. Guess I expected more from this book. This has not left me with a ‘happy feeling.
